Snow fell heavily outside the great bay windows of the asylum. Naomi watched sullenly as the drifts of snow became deeper and taller. Naomi and her small group were on the third floor of the asylum, the snow reached just ten feet under the window where she stood. It’s the thirteenth of July 2015, and the world that Naomi and her small group of survivors once knew is gone. Scientists had been saying for years that the world was changing and it was the fault of the human race. But no one could have predicted that the world would be covered in ice and snow. Nearly a third of the world was wiped out from disease. As for the ones who thought they could escape the oncoming ‘ice age’ they weren’t so lucky. It’s better to stay inside. Find shelter quickly, find food, and keep warm. Don’t venture outside, or else you may never return.

“I don’t know why you’re always looking out that window,” Kellin chuckled sardonically. “There are no other survivors, Naomi. Stop fucking looking!”

“Kellin, would you please leave her alone, it helps her. It’s the only thing keeping her from going insane,” Marci scolded Kellin as she flipped aimlessly through a book.

“This is not the fucking Day After Tomorrow, Naomi. Your parents are dead, just like ours, and they are never coming back!” Kellin shouted.

Tyler awoke from his nap as Kellin and Marci’s voices reverberated around the room. He looked over to see Naomi holding her hands up to her ears, as tears slowly ran down her face. “Guys,” he said quietly. The arguing continued, waking up Lee and Pressley as well from their naps by the fireplace. “Guys,” Tyler said a little louder, but still the yelling progressed. “SHUT THE FUCK UP!”

The room fell in silence; the only noise in the room is Naomi’s silent sobbing. Her eyes are squeezed shut, and tears are flowing rapidly down her russet cheeks. Tyler got up and wrapped his arms around her. “Shh, Naomi, it’s okay.” He whispered in her ear. She was the youngest of the group at the age of twenty-two. Everyone here all knew each other, whether they were close or not. Everyone in this room had parents who worked at the asylum. Everyone in this room, are now orphans. When the storm started to get really bad, the parents decided to go out and look for help.

“Stay here,” they had said. “I promise we will come back for you as soon as we find help. Keep safe, I love you.” Those were the last words Naomi heard from her father before he and the others disappeared into the snow. That was in December, 2014.

“Naomi, shit I’m sorry,” Kellin sighed as he stood up and wrapped his arms around her. “I’m an asshole.”

Naomi’s cries soon quieted down. She knew it was foolish to keep hoping and waiting, but what other choice did she have, her father had been her whole world. He was all she had.

“Why don’t you go see what you scrounge up in the kitchen, okay?” Lee smiled as he stood up from his wool sleeping bag. Naomi nodded and left the room quietly as she wiped the tears from her face. On her way to the kitchen, she decided to go into her dad’s office, just to torture herself some more. She opened the door and walked over towards the window. She sighed as she watched more snow fall. Just as she was about to turn away she saw something. “What the fuck,” she whispered.

She ran from the room and quickly made her way back into the grand room where everyone else was waiting.

“Naomi, where’s the fire,” Pressley smiled.

“There are people outside…and they’re alive!"
