This Summer is Going to Suck
Welcome
"Welcome to LAX, we hope you enjoyed your flight, please take your things with you as you disembark," the flight attendant said pleasantly as May stretched her legs before standing and gathering her carry on bag and turning her i-pod on and began playing AC/DC's For those about to rock as she got off the plane.
She saw a male who looked about her age as well as vaguely familiar, holding a sign with her name on it. "Hello?" May mumbled as she got nearer, still trying to figure out just where she knew the guy from.
"You're May?" he replied looking her over. "So cute," he muttered finally as he ruffled her hair ignoring her squawk of indignation, "Come on, lets go get your bags."
And with that he dragged May over to the baggage claim, stacking her bags onto a cart as she handed them to him. "Is this all?" he asked looking at the 3 bags. For whatever reason it struck May as odd that he figured she would have more than she did.
"All I figured I would need," May replied as she moved out of the way for other people to grab their own bags. "Shall we get going or are there more siblings coming?"
"No no, just you," he said, "that is to say. You are the only child Jack has." She realized quickly that he was clearly not expecting the mildly cold way she was speaking.
CC was confused for a moment, the way Jack described her, May was a bubbly fun loving person who couldn't be rude or mean if her life depended on it. Silently the pair exited, loading her bags into the trunk of his car. She slipped into the passenger seat and he pulled away. "So, how long has he been with your mom?" she asked as she searched through her i-pod for something to listen to.
"Um, about ten years now," he answered after a moment, "why didn't you come to the wedding?"
"I haven't spoken to him since I was five, I didn't know he had remarried until yesterday when I got a letter from him...inviting me to stay out here for a while."
"Oh," CC said, nodding as he got on the freeway. The pair were quickly falling into an akward and uncomfortable silence.
