You Saved Me

American Idiot

Ashley's POV: Whoa. Where did Katie learn to fight like that? I definitely have to give her credit for that display, she's good. A better fighter than some guys I know actually, which is reassuring and scary at the same time...
"What?" she asked.
Jayy and I both quickly shake our heads and say, "Nothing," then I wrap an arm around her and we walk out of the store.
We opt to hit the food court and grab something to eat, where I have to argue with her to get a foot long at Subway, since she only wanted veggies on it. Finally I won that argument, then she gets apples, 3 cookies, and an apple juice with it. She pays for her meal before I can have the chance to, and walks beside me as I put the finishing touches on my sub.
Once we all get and pay for our food, we go over to a small corner table where we sit down and begin eating.
"So, I have to ask," Jayy says wiping his mouth with a napkin, "Where did you learn to kick ass like that?"
Katie shrugs, then says, "Don't know. I've always been able to though. I just choose not to fight too often, unless I'm playing with Dahvie, and then that's not a real fight."
"Wow," is all Jayy can obviously think to say about that.
"Yep," she says, then perks up some, and says, "Oh! American Idiot by Green Day!"
She drags me from the table, and leads me to the middle of the tables and starts dancing to the song that's playing over the speakers, and singing along. I smile at her, then dance with her until the song ends, and we return to our seats.
"So, I take it you're a fan?" we hear from behind us, and when we turn we find none other than Billie Joe Armstrong.
I watch Katie shrug, then say, "Yes and no."
"What does that mean?" he asked her.
"Your music used to be awesome, and I still listen to the old stuff, but then I don't know, it started sucking so hard around 21st Century Breakdown. And don't get me started on that Uno, Dos, Tre, shit you guys put out," she says bluntly, "Sorry, but as a fan, that was a disappointment."
Billie looks down, then says, "I'm sorry that you feel that way. Maybe we could talk about it, and we can get a feel for what the fans want."
"You're welcome to join us now, if you want," I offer.
"That's a great idea," Katie says, so Billie accepts our offer, and sits with us.
"So, what are you looking for in our music now?" Billie asked Katie.
"Well, look at Boulevard of Broken Dreams, for example. You wrote, 'I walk a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known. Don't know where it goes, but it's home to me, and I walk alone'. That is pure poetry to the lost and forgotten souls like myself and so many others, and when you sing it, you can feel the emotion behind it, but with Lazy Bone off Dos, it's an insane song. When I first heard it, I was like, 'He was stoned when he wrote this. He had to be, because if that wasn't the case, he never would have let this shit slide'. I'm sorry for being so blunt about it, but that's my honest opinion," she tells him.
"So, the lyrical content is an important factor," he says, with a small nod.
"Extremely important. That's what people can relate to the most. That's what helps you connect to your fan base on a personal level," she says, taking a drink of her juice.
He nods again, then asked, "Anything else we could work on?"
"Maybe some of the instrumentals. Some of them just don't sound like they match that song in particular. It really needs to set the tone for the lyrics. A good example of that is Holiday. It's upbeat and slightly insane, so the music goes so well with the lyrics. They all have to work in harmony or it's going to tank," she states. Damn. She's just full of surprises today, isn't she? I had no clue she knew so much about that, nor would ever say something like this to the lead singer of Green Day himself.
"Alright. Maybe you would like to sit in for our next recording session, and before either of you say no, she can't, she'll be in good hands, and you two can join in as well," Billie says, directing the last statement at Jayy and me.
"I don't see why not," Jayy says.
"Sure," I say.
"We'd love to then," Katie says, shaking Billie's hand, then exchanging numbers with him and saying, "Text me when you're in the studio, and we'll come down if we can."
"Sounds good. Thank you again, Katie," Billie says, then gets up and walks away.
