We Caught Fire

A Very Merry Unhappy Birthday To You

Odessa sat quietly on the counter, her eyes scanning over the room silently as she watched the guys get ready for their very last show on this tour. She knew that they were all looking forward to it not just because it meant that they would all go home after this, but the guys loved playing their last shows. Andy always told her that the crowds were better, almost like they knew that it was all coming to an end and they had to have a great time for everyone else. Dess also knew that this final show was ending far better than the last one and suddenly she felt sad.

“You okay babe?” Andy asked, coming to stand in front of her and Dess sucked in a breath and looked up at him. His hair was growing longer in the front and back, but he was keeping the sides shaved close to his head.

“Yeah…just memories…” She sighed and Dess looked down at her hands and noticed that they were trembling. Andy followed her gaze and brought his hands down to capture hers before bringing them up to rest against his lips.

“I know…I was thinking about that today too.” His breath tickled against her knuckles and Dess smiled lightly. She should tell him what the date was, but it was the last show of the tour and Dess didn’t want to bring Andy or any of the guys down.

“You look like you want to say something Dess. What is it?” Shit. Andy could always tell when something was on her mind and Dess knew that she would have to fess up. She couldn’t lie to him-not about this.

“Today would have been Moira’s seventeenth birthday…” Her voice was no louder than a whisper but by the look on his face, Dess knew that Andy had heard her.

“Oh shit…babe…” He brought her to his chest, his arms engulfing her in a bone crushing hug and Dess felt his chin come to rest on top of her head as they stood there for a few moments.

“It-it’s okay. She would have wanted me to be here. I just need to keep reminding myself that.” Dess looked up at him, her eyes watery and Andy felt his own tears sting at his eyes.

“If you want to hang back here tonight the guys and I will understand.” He said, his voice low as Dess just shook her head and looked around the room. CC and Ashley were taking shots, laughing loudly at something the other had said. Jake was sitting on the couch, his phone to his ear as he spoke softly to Ella and Jinxx had his violin out, plucking at the strings softly as he closed his eyes.

“No. I didn’t come on this tour to hide in a back room.” Her voice was strong, but Dess hoped Andy couldn’t detect the hint of sadness that laced her words.

“Help me with my paint?” Andy smirked down at her as Dess just rolled her eyes and moved to grab the pot of paint from the other side of the counter.

Hopping back up, Dess laughed as she noticed that her nose was still only up to his upper chest and as she looked up Andy smirked down at her. She slowly dipped two fingers into the pot, covering them with the slightly sticky substance and then she began to run her fingers over his skin. Andy shuddered under her gentle touch, glancing down at her and smiling as he noticed how concentrated she seemed to be. He smirked as her fingers ran trails down his stomach, stopping just above the top of his tight black pants as she rubbed at his hips and then smirked up at him.

“You are such a tease…” He groaned as Dess moved away from him, her back leaning up against the mirror as she folded her hands in her lap and just stared up at him, a soft smile playing on her luscious lips.

“I’ve always been a tease…” She smiled up at him and looked over his shoulder, her smile growing wider and more devious. Andy followed her stare and noticed that Ashley and CC were both staring at the couple, their mouths wide open.

“Problem?” His voice was low and protective and Andy reached his hands out, grabbing Dess around her waist as his two band mates just looked on.

“Why do you get so lucky you fucker?” Ashley laughed as he moved over towards them, his small hand coming to rest on Andy’s shoulder as he looked around the singer and glanced at Dess.

“I’m not a manwhore?” Andy asked, his voice playful as he felt Ashley shove his shoulder and laugh.

“Dess if he ever doesn’t treat you right…remember me and how nice I’ve always been to you…” He winked at her and Dess just rolled her eyes at Ashley’s antics as she watched the bassist saunter off and then looked up at Andy.

“You ready to get out there and rock it one last time Biersack?” She asked, her eyebrows raising in a wiggle as Andy just nodded, his lips turned up into the boyish grin that always got her. Andy held out his hands and Dess placed her small ones inside as she jumped down from the counter and they all began to walk out towards the stage.

Dess moved to stand off to the right side of the stage as the guys grabbed their instruments and geared one another up. She peeked around CC’s drum kit and a smile came to her face as Dess listened to the crowd chanting for the guys. They all moved past her, one by one as they went out on to the stage to wild applause. Andy was last, he was always last, and as he passed her she felt him grab her hand, pulling her with him as she tugged back, a look of worry and surprise plastered on her face. Dess stood there in the middle of the stage and saw over a thousand eyes staring back at her. The crowd continued to cheer and all Dess could do was look to Andy, who in turn was smiling back at her widely.

“What the fuck is going on Paris?!” Andy yelled into the mic, one hand gripping the base while the other held Dess where she was. She smiled out into the crowd as they roared and slowly she tried to move away from Andy but he held her there.

“I don’t know if you guys have heard that we’re making a new album, but we wanted to play one of our new songs for you guys! This song we’re about to play we wrote for someone very special in our lives who recently passed…” There was a collective sadness in the audience and Dess felt like her heart was going to beat right of her chest as she listened to Andy continue.

“…we just found out that today would have been her seventeenth birthday and this is her older sister and love of my life Odessa! So this is a song called In The End and we hope you guys love it!” Dess felt her stomach flip as Jinxx started in on the violin and Andy motioned for her to move closer to his mic.

Dess sang along with Andy, her soft voice growing stronger along with Jake’s guitar and CC’s drumming. Andy looked over at her, his smile wide as he sang and soon Dess felt her trembling cease as she sang loudly. The crowd was shouting at her, words she couldn’t hear or understand but that didn’t matter to Dess. She sang these words and thought of Moira and in that moment Dess no longer felt sad for her sister or for herself. She knew, deep down, that Moira had lived the best life she was capable of and even in her death that no one would ever forget her. The song came to an end, but Andy never let go of her hand as he addressed the audience once again.

“Did you guys enjoy that?!” The crowd cheered, their fists raised as Andy leaned over and placed a hard kiss to her lips before speaking once again.

“Good! This next song is one of my personal favorites and I know this gorgeous girl next to me really loves it as well. This is Perfect Weapon…” Andy led Dess back over to the side of the stage, dropping her hand gently as he roared into the mic, his eyes never leaving hers as he backed up towards the front of the stage.

Dess watched as the guys ran around the stage, singing song after song as the crowd yelled and sang a long loudly. She watched as Andy ran around, throwing his arms around Jake’s shoulder and sneering out into the crowd. They truly seemed to be loving all of this and Dess felt weightless as she watched them perform. Dess laughed as CC looked over towards her, his eyes crossed and his tongue sticking out and suddenly she felt energized. She jumped in place, singing a long loudly to Andy’s words and Dess felt sixteen again. It was almost as if Moira’s spirit was in her as she jumped and danced around and silently Dess sent a small kiss up towards the sky as the boy’s set came to an end.

“Thank you so much Paris! We are the Black Veil Brides and we’ll hopefully see you guys sometime next year!” Andy said loudly into the mic as he placed it down in its holder, bowed and then ran over to where Dess was standing. He scooped her up, her arms around his neck as Andy swung her around, his smile wide and happy.

“You are fucking crazy!” Dess shouted as Andy stopped swinging her around and moved to walk back towards their dressing room.

“I’m crazy…crazy about you babe. That was amazing!” His voice was loud, a habit whenever he came off stage and could hardly hear anything but Dess didn’t mind.

“I can’t believe you!” She laughed at him, her small hand pushing at Andy’s shoulder as they entered the dressing room and were met with cheering.

“Dess! We had no idea you had a pair of lungs on you sweet cheeks!” CC ran over towards her, his hand held high as Dess jumped up and slapped her hand against his.

“That was fucking amazing!” Ashley said as he approached Dess, a bottle of Jack in one hand and two shot glasses held in the other. He poured her a shot and then poured Andy one as the group all joined in the middle of the room and held their glasses up.

“Here’s to a great fucking tour!” CC said, clinking his glass against Dess’.

“Here’s to heading home to the ones we love.” Jinxx said next, clinking his glass against Jake’s.

“Here’s to the new record!” Jake said, his glass clinking with Ashley’s and the bassist grinned wider than the Cheshire Cat.

“Here’s to getting more chicks on the next tour!” Ashley smirked over at Dess, who just shook her head.

“Here’s to the fans…and to you babe.” Andy said the last bit softly and Dess only smiled as he clinked his glass with hers.

“Here’s to Black Veil Brides and to Moira!” She smiled widely as they all reached in, their glasses clinking loudly before they all threw back their shots.

Dess smiled over at Andy, watching him wince as the burning liquid ran down his throat and she could only laugh. Moira had been honored tonight, but why did Dess feel like things were only going to go downhill from here?

“Babe! Hurry up!” Dess shouted behind her, her carryon bag smacking against her ass as she ran after CC and saw that Andy was lagging behind.

They had all gotten off to a late start that morning due to too much drinking the night before and now the entire band was in danger of missing their flight back home. Dess huffed as she ran after CC, breathing heavily as she looked up and saw that they were coming close to their gate. Looking over her shoulder Dess smiled as Andy and Ashley wheezed a long behind them and finally it seemed like they had reached their destination. The plane was almost done boarding by the time they reached the gate and thankfully everyone was accounted for moments before they stopped boarding.

Dess handed over her ticket, slinging her bag over her shoulder more as she followed CC and Jake down the on ramp and soon she was searching for her seat. The flight was packed, but Dess was thankful to see that all of their seats were close to one another and more towards the back of the plane. CC and Jake stopped one row from the very back and as Dess looked up she saw that she, Andy and Jinxx would all be sitting next to one another. Sighing she stuffed her bag in the over head compartment and then took her seat next to the window. Soon Andy and Jinxx joined her, Andy sitting next to her as Jinxx took the aisle seat.

“Ready to head back home?” Andy asked softly as the flight attendants began to speak about safety and Dess turned to him. She felt so tired, not just from the previous night but just in general-this tour had worn her out and so had the overflow of emotions that she had been feeling.

“Desperately. I miss Dove and our bed…” She yawned, her jaw aching as Dess felt Andy reach out and take her hand in his.

“I miss her and Crow. If you want to nap babe feel free to use my shoulder as a pillow.” He pressed a hand to her cheek, bringing her head to rest against his shoulder and Dess smiled softly as she kissed his neck before laying her head down.

“Wake me when they bring food around…”She mumbled softly and felt peaceful as Andy ran his fingers over her cheekbones and her lips.

“I will…love you.” He whispered into her ear before he kissed her temple and moved away from her slightly.

“…love you too.” She was already asleep, but Dess could feel that rest was not something that was in store for her this plane ride.

Dess looked around her, seeing that she was standing in an open field and it all felt very familiar. The sky was clear and cloudless and the trees were swaying softly in the breeze. Dess looked down at herself-her white dress was billowing out around her as she stood there in her bare feet and she blinked as her hair whipped around her face. Off in the distance there were three people, one short, while the other two were taller, the third person towering over the other two and Dess immediately knew who it was.

“Andy?” She asked, walking towards the small group and felt the soft grass squish in between her toes.

As Odessa walked closer, she felt like her heart was beating out of her chest because she could now see the other two people more clearly. Her father, aged slightly but still smiling, looked at her and she noticed that he didn’t look sick or like he was dying. In fact he looked very much a live as he stood there in all black. His pants were black and baggy, his black shirt hanging off of his shoulders as he just continued to stare at her, a soft smile playing on his lips. His green eyes, identical to hers, looked down as she came within a few feet from the group and stopped.

“Daddy?” She asked, her hand reaching out towards him but Odessa stopped short as she looked in between Andy and her father and saw the final figure standing there.
Moira looked like her old self-not stick thin and dying with no hair. Her hair black hair was shining in the sunlight, her pale skin slightly flushed as she smiled up at her older sister. Her black dress fit her well and Dess smiled as she noticed Moira was wearing her leather jacket. There was a soft smile playing on the younger girl’s lips as she continued to stare Dess down.

“Moira…what are you all doing here?” Dess asked as she moved forward and wrapped her arms around Moira’s shoulders. She was shocked when she realized that Moira was solid and as she hugged her younger sister Dess looked up and caught eyes with Andy.

“They’re here to take me with them Dess…please help me.” Andy’s face was growing paler by the second, his cheeks sinking in and his once bright blue eyes were becoming dull.

The sky turned an inky black as Dess felt herself being pushed farther away from the group and she stared in horror as both her father’s and Moira’s eyes turned to pitch as they looked at her blankly. She reached out towards Andy, her finger tips touching his arm lightly when suddenly her father reached out and moved to yank Andy away from her. Dess heard herself cry out as she watched on in horror as Andy seemed to be dying slowly. She screamed until her throat hurt and Dess tried to move towards them but felt herself being pushed back by an unseen force.

“He is ours now. There is no one else to comfort you or keep you in this world. You are all alone.” Her father’s voice sounded cruel as he hung on to the now crumpled Andy and Dess again was pushed back as she tried to rush towards them.

“No! You can’t! You can’t take him away from me!” She sobbed, falling to her knees as she covered her eyes with her hands and felt her tears wet her palms.

“Yes! You’re destined to roam the world alone Dess…no one could ever love you and stay alive. Don’t you know that by now?” Moira’s voice was cold and Dess looked up to see that Andy was silently laying on the ground, his eyes staring at the sky above them.

“I-I can’t be alone…you can’t take him from me.” She cried, inching forward as the sky began to lighten and Dess watched as her father disappeared and now she was only left with Moira and a still unmoving Andy.

“He’s gone. You will never feel his love again…” Moira looked down at her as Dess finally got close enough to Andy so that she could grab on to him. Slowly Moira faded just as their father had and Dess looked down at Andy.

He looked just as he always looked-his blue eyes staring up at her softly but she could tell that he was barely able to hold on as she felt his hand come out to touch her face. Dess moved her hand so that it covered his as she felt his palm on her cheek, his thumb tracing over her lips softly. He tried to speak, his mouth opening slightly, but no words came out and Dess felt herself collapse on to his chest. His hand came to rest on the back of her head and slowly Dess raised her head to look at him. Andy’s eyes were wet with tears as he looked up at her, that soft grin coming to his lips as he spoke.

“I love you…I will continue to love you even in death.” His voice was weak and Dess cried even harder.

“I love you…but you can’t go. You can’t because we’re supposed to grow old together, remember? We were supposed to be together forever…” Dess leaned down, placing her lips against his softly and she cried out as she felt him take his last breath. She moved her face away, looking down and seeing his blue eyes looking back up at her. There was no life behind them, no smile and no love.

Dess sobbed, her arms crossed over his still chest and she felt her heart breaking in to a million pieces. The one person in the world who was always supposed to be there for her and now he was gone-she was alone. She continued to cry, her body shaking as her sobs racked her body when suddenly Dess felt a hand come to rest on her shoulder. As she looked up, Dess was met with a blinding light and she felt herself being shaken as she closed her eyes and tried to stop the pounding in her head.

“Babe?! Dess? Odessa!” Andy’s voice rang in her ears and Dess hesitantly cracked one eye open and was met with his concerned baby blues staring down at her.

“Wha-?” She mumbled, rubbing the back of her hand across her eyes as she thought back to the dream she had just had. Why was her face wet? Did Andy pour water on her to get her to wake up?

“Are you okay?” He looked scared and as Dess sat up fully she noticed that everyone seemed to be moving forward-their plane had landed.

“Yeah…” She muttered and then his arms were around her, holding her tightly as he kissed her temple.

“I was getting really worried about you there at the end. You kept thrashing around and then tears just started pouring down your face. You sure you’re okay?” He asked and Dess felt like she had been hit by a mac truck as she began to really remember everything about her dream.

“Yeah…I’ll be okay.” She put on a fake smile as Andy leaned over and kissed her gently before he moved to grab their bags.

As Dess moved along with the guys through customs and security she couldn’t help but dwell on her dream. Everything had seemed so real and she felt her heart sink as she watched Andy smile back at her as they walked down towards the waiting car. Dess knew that she could lose Andy at any moment and that thought terrified her. Was it really worth the pain of losing another person to love someone so fiercely? Dess couldn’t bear the thought of losing Andy, but could she really let him go out of her life without a fight?
