We Caught Fire

Like Father Like Daughter

“Don’t be ridiculous Moirabear…you aren’t going to die.” Andy looked down at the younger girl, his voice low as he leaned down and pressed a kiss softly to Odessa’s temple.

“Yes she is Andy…”Odessa said, her voice watery and weak as she looked up into his eyes. She was serious with this he realized, they were all being serious.

“But, how? You’re only sixteen…you’re too young.” He felt Odessa shaking underneath him as he looked to Moira who just smirked at him, her arms now crossed over her chest.

“Like father, like daughter I guess.“ The small girl shrugged and Andy was now wondering how she was being so calm and collected at this information.

“What does that mean? Dess?” He looked down, the love of his life still held on to him tightly as her crying slowly abated.

“Our father died of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma…” She said quietly as Andy felt his heart stop.

Cancer?

Moira was too young to have cancer…she was too young to die period.

“My husband died of it almost three years ago. Moira’s been getting sick a lot lately and so we went to the doctor. We got the test results yesterday evening while you two were away.” Odessa’s mother looked down at her hands and following her gaze he noticed that she had a small picture of her family resting on the table.

“But you’re so young Moira…you can beat this I know you can.” He said desperately as he watched as first Rose got up and then Moira followed suit, looking down at him sadly.

“I hope you’re right Andy…” She said this simply before turning to go upstairs to her room and finally Andy and Odessa were left alone in the kitchen.

The couple sat there for what seemed an eternity. Andy held Odessa as she cried quietly and he felt tears come to his own eyes as he felt her pain. He had never lost anyone before and so he could only feel what she was feeling in a small way, but he felt his heart sink at the thought that one of his biggest fans was going through something like this. Moira had always impressed him with her dedication to the band and he knew the torment she went through every time she went to school dressed in a Black Veil Brides t-shirt. Odessa had spoken openly with him about her sister being bullied, but she always told him that Moira didn’t let it phase her one bit.

Andy sighed, his fingers running small circles on the top of Odessa’s head as finally she had ceased her crying and looked up at him. What would this mean for their newly laid plans? He couldn’t possibly ask her to come away with him-not now. Not after everything that they had learned this morning and Andy felt his stomach tighten and a wave of nausea hit him. He reached out, grabbing a glass of water that had been left on the table he took a large gulp and then handed it down to the girl in his arms. Odessa had finally calmed down and was looking up at him.

“I’m sorry you had to be here for this…” She said sadly as he just nodded his head and leaned down to kiss her lips softly.

“I’m glad I was here for you…for Moira. I wouldn’t be anywhere else at the moment if I had a choice.” He said and she smiled at him softly. He was so comforting, even his smell of cigarette smoke and Old Spice had become a comfort to her over the time they had spent together.

“I understand if you don’t want to leave your family right now Dess…” He said softly and even though it killed him to think of her not coming with him after all Andy knew it was for the best.

“Will you excuse me for a minute? I need to go talk to my mother.” Odessa kissed his cheek softly as he just nodded and watched as she walked into the livingroom.

Andy looked around and suddenly the house erupted in his own voice as the bass made the dishes rattle in the cabinets. He smiled as he moved from the chair and began to walk upstairs. He had only seen Moira’s room in the pictures and videos that she and Odessa sent to him and as he opened the door and saw his own face staring back at him Andy felt his heart swell with pride. Moira was sitting at her computer, her back to him as she clicked away at her keyboard. Clothes littered the floor and posters lined every inch of available wall space and Andy was suddenly reminded of his own teenage room.

“Are you okay Moirabear? I know this is really hard on you…” He said as she jumped at the sound of his voice.

“I’m fine. It’s my mom and Dess you should be worried about…especially Dess.” She said, her hands leaving the keyboard as she turned around and faced him. Suddenly the music changed and the acoustic version of their song Knives and Pens was coming through her speakers.

“You’re the one who’s sick…” He said as he came to sit down on her bed and he looked the small girl in the eyes; her eyes were identical to Odessa’s and Andy felt his heart ache.

“Please Andy…please make Odessa go with you.”She pleaded with him and he felt her small hand take his, her many rings cold against his skin.

“I don’t think she’s going to want to leave you Moira. I can’t force her to leave.” He said simply and Moira shook her head, her eyes angry.

“Andy I watched my dad shrink away into nothing and then die. Dess didn’t see it because she was away and I don’t want her to see me like that.” Moira moved to turn the music down and Andy just looked down at her.

“Do you really think you’re going to die Moira? Aren’t you going to fight at all?” He asked as he felt her eyes on him.

“I’m not afraid to die…”She said, the tears in her voice saying otherwise. Andy said nothing as the two of them just sat there, his music playing softly in the background.

“Please Andy…make her go with you. I can’t get better if I have to keep worrying how she’s taking everything.” Andy could only nod as he reached out and took the smaller girl in his arms.

He hugged her and it was nice to be able to hug one of his biggest fans in her time of need. He had always hoped that he would be able to connect with a fan in such a personal way and thanks to Odessa he was able to do that with Moira. Looking around the room he smirked as he was met with his own blue eyes staring down at him. It was cute that the younger sister of the girl he loved had such a huge crush on him. He pulled out of the hug and smirked as he noticed the red blush that was creeping up her neck.

“Don’t look at me like that…Dess would kill me if she was seeing this right now.” Moira laughed, placing her hand on the back of her head she fluffed her hair and he smiled. She was like his own personal mini-me.

“Tell you what, we have some time off until our next tour and we’re playing some really small shows in LA to try out some new material. Maybe Dess and I can arrange for you to come out before you start any kind of treatment.” Andy saw the smaller girl’s eyes light up and she squealed.

“Oh my god! That would be so awesome! Thank you Andy!” She said as she wrapped her arms around him again and Andy heard someone clearing their throat from the doorway.

Andy glanced behind him and saw that Odessa was standing there. Her eyes were red and her cheeks were blotchy from where she had been crying and suddenly Andy felt himself rising from the chair, his arms wrapping around her still frame once more. She didn’t cry, probably because she was all out of tears at this point and he didn’t know what he should do or say. Slowly she looked up at him, her eyes unsure of what she should be thinking right now.

“Dess…I want you to go with Andy.” Moira said, getting up from her chair as she approached the couple. Andy let go of Odessa and took a step back so the sisters could embrace one another.

“I can’t do that Moira…you know I can’t leave you to fight this alone.” She said, taking her younger sisters hands in her own Odessa felt her eyes plead with the stubborn girl.

“I won’t be alone. Please…I want you to go. Don’t make me pack your things myself.” She laughed, a stubborn look creasing her brow as Odessa felt Andy’s hand come to rest on her shoulder.

“Baby…listen to her. I know you don’t want to go and I’m not by any means going to make you, but this is what she wants.” Andy said and he hated himself for sounding so selfish in that moment.

“We’ll make it work so that you can come out and see us. I’ll keep you on speed dial and you call me if anything…and I mean ANYTHING…happens.” Odessa finally caved at the pleading look her sister was giving her. She knew in her heart that this was a mistake, but she felt ganged up on and she couldn’t fight her despair any more.

Odessa reached out to her sister and hugged her tightly and she could tell that Moira had lost some weight since before the holidays. Odessa held back tears as her fingers rubbed her sister’s side and she could feel each one of her ribs. Pulling away, she smiled brightly down at Moira and then turned to Andy. Thank God for him-he had been so supportive through all of this and she knew he would continue to be through this entire process. Odessa made a silent vow as she and Andy headed back to her room to begin packing her things; she would not make the same mistake with Moira that she had made with her father.

No, Odessa was going to be there for her little sister every step of the way, even it meant leaving Andy behind.
