The Mortician's Daughter

Introduction.

“You need to get me out of this hell hole, Ashley.” I whine to my older cousin as I look outside my window, watching my parents tell the movers where to put shit. “I’m basically in the middle of no where.”

“You know if I could, I’d take you in.” He chuckles. “But I can barely take care of myself let alone a 17 year old girl.” I just groan, causing Ashley to laugh even more. “Come on Anna, it can’t be that bad.”

“It’s going to be hell. People somehow already know I’m the mortician’s daughter; they’ll make my life a living hell.” I complain.

“Or they’ll be too afraid of you to even bother.” He says, trying to lighten the mood.

“Not funny, Ash.” I mutter as I lean up against the window.

“Listen kiddo, you’ve got one more year of school left then you can do whatever the fuck you want,” he begins to explain. “Once you’re done with school you can move out here with me if you want. Maybe we’ll even start that band we’ve been talking about since you were 13.” I couldn’t help but to chuckle. “Hey, I’ll call you later; I’ve got to get ready for work.”

“Alright.” I sigh. “I’ll talk to you later.”

“Love ya, cuz.” He says before hanging up.

I sigh to myself as I throw my phone onto my bed before walking downstairs; just as my mother and father walk in. “Hi honey.” My mother says in a syrupy sweet voice. “How do you like the room?”

“It would be better if it was any place other then right here.” I smart off, causing my father to glare at me.

“Why don’t you go walk around the neighborhood, Annabel?” My dad asks, controlling his temper. “It’ll do you good to get out for awhile.”

“Fine, let me go upstairs and get my phone.” I mutter before walking back upstairs and get my phone then I head out to explore my home for the next year.

As I’m walking around the neighborhood, I spot a peaceful looking park. I smile a bit before crossing the street to get to it. Just as I walk into the park, I notice a few people all surrounding this lone kid. He had black hair hanging over his eyes. He had eyeliner smudged around his brilliant blue orbs. His Alkaline Trio shirt clung to him tightly along with his black denim ripped jeans. But just as I’m taking in his appearance, the group of guys close in on him. One by one each of them throw a punch to his face, followed by multiple kicks to his ribs. The air sucks back into my lungs as I find myself running towards him. “Get the fuck off of him!” I yell as I rip the smallest guy away first. The others instantly stop when they notice a girl standing there. “Are you guys really that fucking barbaric?” They all look at me as if I’m speaking a foreign language. “He’s a human being. How would you feel if you got jump by a bunch of thugs?”

“Well we aren’t a faggot like him so we wouldn’t have that problem now would we babe?’ He asks with a smirk on his lips. I could instantly feel the contents of my stomach rise up. “You’re new here aren’t you? You’re the mortician’s daughter huh?”

“Yea, now will you do me a huge fucking favor?” I ask him. “Get the fuck away from the kid and leave us the hell alone.”

“Whatever.” He scoffs as he raises his hands in defense. “You freaks need to stick together. But this isn’t over Biersack, not by a long shot.” With that the jock and his posse leave.

I look down at the boy before offering him a hand. At first he finches but then accepts my help. I pull him back up to his feet and let go of his hand. Seconds later, however, he nearly collapses. I wrap my arm around his waist just in time to support him. “Want me to take you to the hospital or anything?” I offer as I walk him over to a bench.

“No,” he replies with a grimace. “I should be fine; you really should leave before people think we’re actually friends.”

“Why would that be such a bad thing?” I ask curiously as I sit next to him. “From the looks of it, you could use a friend or two.”

“You’re definitely new here.” He chuckles briefly before a wave of pain crashes over him. “No one here has been nice to me since freshman year. I’m just a faggot or a freak to them.”

“Well, you don’t seem like a freak to me and I wouldn’t judge you based on your sexual orientation either.” I smile to him. “I’m Annabel.”

“It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know; By the name of Annabel Lee; “ He smirks as he quotes Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe.

“Poe; nice.” I smile.

“I’m Andy by the way.” He says, finally introducing himself.

“Nice to meet you.” I smile to him. “Are you sure you don’t want me to take you to the hospital?” I ask him. “Because it wouldn’t be a trouble at all. My parents would be stoked that I’m out of the house.”

He just chuckles as a smile creeps onto his lips. “Naw, I’m fine; I’m used to this.” He explains, causing me to frown.

“A person shouldn’t be used to this sort of beating.” I tell him. “How old are you anyway?”

“17.” he replies. “I’m turning 18 in December.”

“No way!” I squeal, causing Andy to flinch. “Me too; what day?”

“The 26th.”

“I’m the 25th.” I laugh. “I’m a day older than you.”

Andy just laughs and we begin to talk about random things. From our favorite bands to our favorite movies. Before I knew it, it’s getting dark and my mom is calling my cell wondering where I was. Maybe living here wouldn’t be so bad, at least I’ve made one friend.
