Broken Lungs

Once we got to the drive-in Ashley paid for us, including Gretzky and Donovan. Although they were going to persuade the guy in the booth to let them go in without paying, Ashley insisted doing that for them since they were looking out for us.

"Thank you sir, your movie's at screen 3 to the right. Enjoy!" the nice man said to Ashley before Gretzky drove us over. He reversed next to one of the speaker posts.

"I figured you two would prefer to lay in the back with the trunk open," Gretzky said giving a small smile.

"Oh cool, thank you, guys" Ashley said patting Gretzky on the shoulder and nodding at Donovan.

"Sure thing kid, thanks for paying for us too, you didn't have to," Donovan said looking back at Ashley.

"I know I didn't" he said back smiling.

"Hey, is it okay if we go get something from the snack bar?" Ashley asked taking a hold of my hand. They looked at each other for a few seconds hesitantly but then nodded.

"Sure, but one of us has to go with you," Gretzky said tilting his sunglasses down.

"I'll go," Donovan spoke up before stepping out of the car. Ashley looked at me and I shrugged before we both stepped out from the back seat.

Before we started to walk off, Donovan poked his head in the window to ask Gretzky, "you want anything?" and he shook his head in responce.

I took a hold of Ashleys' hand intertwining our fingers as we made our way to the small building where the snack bar was. Once we got there we stood in line with Donovan right behind us. Ashley stood behind me with his arms wrapped around my waist holding me. The line moved surprisingly quick and before we knew it we were half way through. I had noticed we were standing behind a boy who was about Andys' height with brown hair that went to his ears. He looked around which caused me to catch a glimpse of the bvb logo on the side of his black beanie. Ashley didn't seem to notice though, he was staring off into space while gently rubbing my stomach and smiling to himself.

'I wonder what he's thinking about' I thought to myself.

'It's pretty obvious he's thinking about fucking you, brain-dead teenager' the evil voice said harshly.

I sighed internally before hearing, 'Seriously? You need to shut the fuck up already. You're the reason she's been living in doubt and thinks so negatively of herself. She's a smart, beautiful, sweet and courageous human being. You're nothing but a savage vermin who has nothing better to do than make a wonderful person feel like a complete piece of shit and ruin her good mood. You're exactly like that poor excuse of a man who ruined her, pathetic. She loves Ashley, and guess what? He loves her too. So for once in your life, stay the fuck out of her thoughts, quit throwing your shit comments in her face and let her be happy.' Ashley thought sternly back with venom laced in his voice. I heard the evil voice huff in annoyance and could almost feel him rolling his eyes.

'Thank you Ashes,' I thought and could hear the smile in his voice, 'You're welcome baby.'

Honestly, even just hearing him say that in my thoughts made my heart stop. I don't know why, I never really liked it when Alex called me that but with Ashley it's like, I always want him to.

"Yeah mom, don't worry about it, I'll get it this time," I heard the boy in front of me say. I saw him putting his wallet away in his back pocket but noticed something fell out of it in front of me in the process. I bent down picking up the twenty dollar bill and tapped the boy on his shoulder once I stood back up. He turned around looking down at me with his bright green eyes and I held out the folded bill to him.

"Here, you dropped this," I said smiling shyly and he took it returning the smile.

"Fuck, thank you so much, that would've been a disaster," he said chuckling in relief. He finally noticed Ashley and went wide eyed with his mouth hanging open.

"You- you're- you're- A- Ash- Pur- Pur-" he stuttered pointing at Ashley.

"Ashley Purdy," I said for him causing him to nod frantically. I giggled and looked up to see Ashley smiling and holding his hand out.

"Hey there, what's your name?" he asked sweetly and the boy shook it in awe.

"I'm Evan, holy shit, you guys are amazing, you were the ones who taught me to never give up" He said with a cheek splitting smile causing Ashley to chuckle. I glanced at his arm and saw the faded lines that traced up his arm to his elbow.

"Thank you, Evan, I'm very happy to hear that we've been able to help" he said smiling. As Evan was drawing his arm back I grabbed a hold of his wrist bringing it closer to me. I moved his bracelets showing some new marks and brushed my fingertips along the surprisingly long pink lines. I looked up into Evans sad eyes that were masked behind his smile that slowly faded. I moved the bracelets back hiding the scars once again and let go of his arm.

"Sorry" I said remorsefully and he shook his head.

"Don't worry about it," he said lightly.

I felt Ashley slip his hand in mine lacing our fingers together. Evans eyes darted down to our joined hands and back up at Ashley.

"Is she one of your..?" He asked trailing off being as nice as possible.

'Does he mean one of his one night stands?' I thought feeling myself frown.

"What? Oh, no! God no, she's nothing like that. She's so much more. She's my everything," he said causing me to look at him and give a sad smile.

I saw Evan frown sheepishly, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. It's just that you're usually always around the blonde barbie types. Not to be rude, again; she's just different. I like that she is though. I mean," he sighed and smacked his own cheek in remorse.

"I apologize. It's just a different sight to see. She's cute with red hair, isn't exposing herself in a dramatic way and doesn't look like shes gone under the knife multiple times or even at all. But who are you, though?" He asked me and before I could say anything Ashley spoke up, "Well, it looks like you'll be the first fan to find out. This wonderful little lady right here," Ashley started before wrapping his arms around my waist and looking into my eyes causing my heart to race, "is my absolutely adorable girlfriend, Melissa" he said smiling once mentioning the word girlfriend and kissed my cheek multiple times rapidly causing me to giggle.

"Honestly that's great to hear, she seems pretty awesome and obviously adorable from that giggle and onesie she's rockin' there," Evan pointed out smiling and I felt my cheeks growing warm.

"I know," Ashley said winking at me causing me to blush more.

"I hope it's not any trouble but could I possibly get a picture with you?" Evan asked looking at Ashley somewhat nervous.

"Sure thing," Ashley said unraveling his arms from my waist.

"Would you, mind..?" Evan asked me nicely and I nodded. He smiled and handed me his phone once Ashley stood next to him. They both stuck their thumbs up and I snapped the picture.

"There you go," I said handing it back to Evan.

"Thank you," he started but turned his attention when his mother called for him at the register.

"Oop, gotta go, it was awesome getting to finally meet you," he spoke to Ashley before looking at me, "and I'm sorry again if I offended you in any way or came off as an ass. You guys seem really great together though. Stay that way, got it?" He asked with complete seriousness looking between me and Ashley.

"We will. Don't hurt yourself anymore, okay? You'll get through it strongly, don't let others get you down. They're not worth doing that" Ashley said to him before he started walking backwards to his mom.

"Thank you guys" he said smiling and then turning.

"Well that was sweet of you," I said looking up at Ashley and he smiled.

"You know I meant what I said, right? You really are my everything, Melly" he said putting his hands on my waist causing my heart to melt.

I blushed before admitting, "You're my everything too, Ashes." He smiled before connecting his lips with mine. I kissed back and wrapped my arms around his neck bringing him closer. We broke apart when we heard Donovan clear his throat and looked to see him pointing to an open register. All three of us walked up to the counter and Ashley started to order a few things.

"Want anything specific, baby?" He asked turning his attention to me.

"Umm, just a cherry slurpee, you can get anything else you want though" I said shyly and he sighed.

"Fine, I'm ordering for you then, because don't forget," he paused before placing a gentle hand on my tummy, "we're also feeding another. Which means you need to eat more than you normally do so you're both well fed" he said with concern. I sighed and nodded causing him to smile. He leaned down and gave me a quick loving peck on the lips before turning his attention back to the girl behind the register and ordering again.

I had looked to see a little girl with her dad at the register next to us. She looked about 6 with strawberry blonde curly hair, hazel eyes and freckles. She was wearing a batman shirt and seemed to be fascinated with Donovans' appearance.

"Hi," she spoke looking up at him as he towered over her.

"Hello," he said back.

"Are you a spy?" She asked curiously.

"No,"

"Are you a bad guy?"

"No"

"Do you know the joker?"

"Nope"

"Do you hunt aliens?"

"No"

"Are you one of the guys from men in black?"

"No"

"Do you have eyes?"

"Yes"

"Are you like cyclops from x-men since you're wearing sunglasses?"

"No"

"What's your name?"

"Greg"

"Are you a good guy?"

"Yes"

"Do you fight bad guys?"

"Sometimes"

"Does that mean you know batman?"

"Maybe"

"Cool" she said smiling up at him. He kneeled down slightly and looking around before putting his finger to his lips.

"Shhh, don't tell though" he whispered to her and she nodded causing me to smile.

"Here you go Melly" Ashley spoke bringing me back to earth. I turned to him with wide eyes seeing he got us a huge bucket of popcorn, some nachos, a funnel cake with strawberries on top, 2 boxes of candy and a huge slurpee. http://www.polyvore.com/galaxy_drive-in/set?id=110094653

He grinned handing me the popcorn and slurpee as he carried the rest. As we walked out I heard the little girl tell Donovan, "Tell batman I said hi" and I saw him smile giving her a thumbs up just before we walked out into the cool air. When we got back to the truck I had noticed Gretzky was sitting in a lawn chair next to the open trunk. He had pulled down the 2 extra back seats and laid down a blanket where he also placed my cake the cat plushie. Ashley placed the food down on the blanket and I mimicked his actions. I saw him whisper something to Donovan real quick and he nodded in response.

"Come on baby, there's still a few more minutes till the movies start" he said smiling and holding his hand out. I looked at him confused but took it anyways and he led me to the front passenger seat door.

"What are we doing?" I asked still confused as I watched him get in and open the sunroof.

"You'll see," was all he simply said before climbing up through the now open sunroof. I shrugged but followed along doing the exact same thing as he did.

I peeked my head up halfway through and saw he was sitting looking up at the now dark night sky with a smile. He held out his hand lovingly for me and I took it. He gently pulled me up and sat me between his legs wrapping his arms around me. I snaked my arms around his waist and rested my head against his chest. He looked down at me with such happiness in his bright brown eyes and holding that same goofy smile he wore when I told him I would be his. I stared up into his gleaming eyes as I listened to his steady heartbeat. It was beating in sync with mine. I closed my eyes as I listened to the rhythmic beats in his chest.

I felt the gently brush of a thumb gliding along my cheek as a hand cupped my face. The feeling of Ashleys hot breath sent a chill down my spine as his lips brushed against mine.

"I love you, Melissa," he whispered against my lips causing my eyes to flutter open seeing his staring down at me. My heart thudded in my chest and I felt everything around me stop for a moment.

'He really loves me?' I thought to myself before I felt myself smile and kiss him passionately.

"I love you too, Ashley," I whispered back once our lips parted. His goofy smile returned and the next thing I knew his lips crashed against mine again. We sat like that for a while just kissing lovingly and holding each other. We broke apart and looked at each other confused for a second.

"Do you hear that?" I asked Ashley and he nodded. It sounded like the beginning to Jack and Sally's Song from The Nightmare Before Christmas. We looked off to the side seeing Evan standing there grinning.

"Sorry, it just seemed to fit the moment perfectly for you too" he said looking up at us and shrugging. We both laughed and Ashley brought me back against his chest so I was lying on him again as he started to sing to me.

"My dearest friend, if you don't mind, I'd like to join you by your side," he sang gently to me before looking up and holding my hand, "where we could gaze into the stars" I melted into his voice before singing with him.

"And sit together," I sang causing him to look back down at me and smile as we sang together, "now and forever, for it is plain, as anyone can see, we're simply meant to be" we smiled at each other and kissed.

I pulled back and turned to see Evan starting to walk away, "hey wait!" I called after him before slipping down quick through the sunroof and hopped out the driver seat door.

"Are you watching the same movies as us?" I asked and heard Ashley slide off the roof and come over standing next to me wrapping an arm around my waist.

"Yeah, I'm watching it with my parents and little sister" he said pointing to a candy apple red 2013 Nissan Rogue SL.

"If you want to, you're welcome to join us," Ashley said smiling and I nodded. His eyes grew wide again as he looked back between us again.

"A-are you guys serious?" He stuttered growing a huge smile.

"Yeah, of course, but you should probably still ask your parents first," Ashley said and Evan nodded.

"Yeah, of course! I'll be back," he said excitedly before running off to his family. I chuckled before Ashley led us back to the open trunk where Donovan and Gretzky both sat in lawn chairs on either side of the opening. We sat down in the trunk on the blanket and I blushed embarrassingly when my stomach growled loudly.

"Eat, baby" Ashley demanded nicely scooting the food towards me and sitting closer to me. I looked at the food hesitantly then back up at Ashley who pouted his lip. I sighed and nodded before starting to eat a bit of popcorn and sip from my slurpee. I stuck my tongue out at him earning a chuckle in response. He pulled me closer to him and attached his lips to mine feeling him smile into the kiss.

"You taste like cherries" he said against my lips causing me to giggle. The sound of someone clearing their throat caught our attention and we saw turned to see Evan standing outside the trunk holding hands with a little girl.

"My parents are okay with us watching the movies with you guys. I hope you don't mind, my little sister joined me" he said sheepishly and we nodded.

"No, it's completely fine" I said and he smiled. She was very shy as Evan climbed in sitting on the other side of Ashley. His little sister had green eyes as well and was completely bald. Evan leaned over and whispered into my ear that she actually has cancer. I smiled sadly as I held out my hand to her.

"Hi, what's your name?" I asked her gently and she hesitantly took it shaking it.

"Ava" she muttered shyly.

"Ava? I like that name, it's beautiful" I said to her before introducing myself back.

"Thank you" she mumbled seeing the corners of her mouth slowly move up into a smile.

"You're welcome. You're very pretty, Ava" I said smiling back at her.

"Thank you, you are too" she said before climbing in sitting next to me and nuzzling into my side. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder and saw her admiring my cake plushie.

"Wanna hold it?" I asked handing it to her and she nodded. She took it shyly hugging it to her chest.

Ashleys' P.O.V

Going into the ending of the movie I had looked over to Melissa who was now lying down asleep and holding Ava. I couldn't help but smile seeing her like that. They had talked for a bit during the beginning of Despicable Me 2 and she even gave Ava her purple batman bracelet.

"Looks like they got along well, that's always a plus in my book," Evan said quietly to me.

"You meant it when you told her you love her, right?" he asked somewhat concerned.

"Of course I did," I started and looked back over in time to see Ava toss over and cuddle deeper into Melissas' arms, "I will always mean it, because I will always love her" I said with every bit of seriousness in my tone.

During the time of the first movie, I had told everything about what had happened to her to Evan. Only because she gave me permission, why would I do it without her consent? He even now knows about the baby. He promised to keep it on the DL, at least until we told everyone else. This was probably the closest I've gotten to a fan other than Jess and Melissa.

Once the movie ended, we woke up Melissa and Evan gently picked up Ava carrying her her back to their car.

"Bye guys, stay happy and thanks for everything. I'll tell Ava you said bye" Evan whispered to Melissa and she smiled tiredly waving. Evan walked off smiling back to his parents and I hopped out of the trunk.

"Come on baby, let's go," I said holding out my arms for my tired little kitten. She tiredly crawled over to me and leaned up on her knees holding her arms out too. I wrapped my arms around her waist and she snaked her arms around my neck. I pulled her out and she surprisingly wrapped her legs around my waist resting her head on my shoulder with her face nuzzled in my neck.

'God I love this girl'

Gretzky opened the door for me and I thanked him as I climbed in rearranging myself to where Mel was sitting in my lap with her head against my chest. I was surprised that she ate everything I got her, of course she had to run to the bathroom to puke at least twice but that's normal for pregnant women, I suppose. I promised myself that I would look after her, every waking moment and love her with every bit of fiber of my being.

-Back at the hospital-

Melissas' P.O.V

I tiredly walked hand in hand with Ashley out of the elevator and yawned.

"Baby are you sure you don't want me to carry you?" Ashley asked pulling me to him and I shook my head.

"Noo, I'm fine" I whined leaning my head into his side as we started to walk past the nurses desk.

"Hi, hello, can I help you guys?" I heard an unfamiliar voice ask calmly and we turned seeing a girl who looked 18. She seemed around 5'8", was slim but fit, had really long straight red hair, freckles and beautiful green eyes. I was kind of confused because it's usually Hannah here by herself at night.

"Hi, um yeah, we're just headed to my moms room. Where's Hannah?" I asked worriedly and saw her smile sadly.

"She ended up getting sick with a stomach bug and left. I'm taking her place for her night shift and Artemis is covering her morning shift till she gets better" she said and then went wide eyed looking to Ashley.

"You're Ashley Purdy! Black Veil Brides is one of my favorite bands. What are you doing here?" she asked still in a calm way.

"Oh wait, that's right, Hannah left a note about you guys, Melissa, right?" she asked looking back at me and I nodded.

"I'm Nikki, nice to meet you" she said extending her arm and I shook her hand, "Nice to meet you too" I said shyly.

"And you two are together, correct?" she asked raising a brow and I blushed but Ashley nodded for us.

She chuckled and nodded, "yeah, Hannah told me that too, I'm really happy for you guys" she said sweetly and I smiled.

"Thank you" Ashley spoke sweetly.
