Cabin by the Sea

Make 'Em Understand Life Is Beautiful

Andy Biersack

A couple days later, while Peyton and Ashley wait at the cabin for the others, I decide to excuse myself and follow the tree lined path from our cabin to the beach yards away. I’m taking this time to take a break from writing music and taking a break from mourning the end of my marriage to Juliet. This isn’t just a much needed vacation for the boys, but this summer is going to be used to find who I am without Juliet and who I want to be period.

”It's a wonderful world, yeah. Fucking diamonds and pearls, yeah. They don't understand what we're living for. Make 'em understand life is beautiful”, I get closer to the beach when I realize I’m not alone. On the beach is a bleach blonde haired girl wearing a solid black swimsuit under a baggie opened flannel top. In front of her is an easel and beside her is the bluetooth speaker blaring whatever song she’s listening to.

Knowing she probably wants to be alone, I turn around and start to head back; only stopping at the sound of her voice. “You know this is a public beach, you are more than free to enjoy it.” She states. I turn around and see her eyes have never left the easel. “While I do love to paint by myself, it’s gotten rather boring. I could use the company if you are interested.”

“If you insist.” I say before putting my beach chair down near her. “I’m Andy by the way.”

“I know.” She says, barely looking away from the easel. “My sister is a huge fan of Black Veil Brides.”

“And what about you?” I ask, naturally curious.

“You have an amazing voice,” she starts out, “but some of your stuff, especially the older music, isn’t my style.”

“And this music is?” I ask, pointing to the bluetooth speaker. It’s a different song but the band does sound the same.

“Don’t dare talk shit on Dirty Heads.” She sternly tells me but laughs shortly after. “I listen to everything. My sister basically only listening to you guys and Asking Alexandria; it’s kind of annoying.”

“You know you never told me your name.” I point out.

“You never asked.” She counters. “I’m Nicole. But please call me Nic.”

“Do you vacation here often?” I ask as she sits down in the beach chair next to me. “You seem very comfortable here.”

“My friends and I have been renting the same cabin every year since we were 18. “ She replies. “This place is the place we come to be ourselves; no exceptions or boyfriends or family drama. Nothing negative can touch us here. These last ten years have been amazing. We survived breaks up and weddings and giving birth to babies. While some of us stay all summer, others will stays a few days or a few weeks. But we always manage to come here to escape. It’s gonna suck whenever the rental property decides to close down or whatever. We’ll have to find a new place to escape to.”

“But that’s not happening any time soon right?” I ask.

“Hopefully not.” She smiles. “So what brings you here rockstar? There are so many place you guys could go but you pick the small beach town of Encintias. Why?”

“What brings you guys up here each year?” I ask her instead.

“It’s far enough from San Diego but still close to home.” She replies.

“It’s 95 miles outside of Los Angeles and far from fans, record labels and the expectations.” I tell her. “We toured the world, made records and now we just want to escape it all.”

“Why not Fiji or Bora Bora?” She asks. “Why stay in California?”

“These cabins are surrounded by trees and we have the ocean in our back yard; it’s the closest thing to heaven right now.” I tell her. “Yea there are private resorts but there are still those chances of coming across fans. In small towns like this, it lessens the chance. Besides, like you, it’s far enough from home but still close to it.”

“Don’t understand it but whatever makes you happy.” She gets up and goes over to the cooler. “Beer?” She holds up a Corona. “I’ve got lime too.”

“Sure why not.” I smile. She pulls out two bottles and pops them open before putting two lime wedges inside.

“This calls for a toast.” She announces as she walks over and hands me a bottle. “I have no idea why but I have a sudden urge to toast to something.”

“What are we toasting to?” I chuckle.

“How about to new friends and a summer none of us will forget?” She suggests. “Because I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot of each other this summer.”

“There will be no objections from me.” I smile. “I’ll cheer to that.” The neck of our bottles clank before we both take a drink. “This place is looking better and better by the minute.”

“Just wait,” she smiles. “You haven’t seen anything yet…”
