Return of the Legion

Wake Up

Ava's POV
I lay awake all night, thinking about what Ivy told me. Looking at the clock, I see it's 3:48 am, so with a deep sigh, I sit up in bed and walk to the window.

Popping a cigarette in my mouth, I open the window and light it, looking down at the sleeping world below. Taking a deep drag off the cigarette, I think about the best way to go about hacking the chips.

Just when I'm running short on ideas, inspiration hits me and I know what I have to do. I butt the cigarette, then silently make my way to our storage unit in the basement of our highrise apartment.

Checking to see I'm not being watched, I enter the small windowless room, flipping on the lamp and turn on my computer. Once it's up and running, I set to work on writing the software to disable the chips. I sit there for hours designing and testing it, knowing I only have a few hours left to perfect it and put it into motion.

I hate my job as an Intelligence Agent, but I guess it's a good thing I got into the Intelligence Agency after all. Typing as fast as I can, I work tirelessly, only taking breaks when I absolutely have to.

As dawn breaks, I take a moment to hack the CCTV cameras in and around the building, hoping to give myself some warning if they come after me. I also hack the cameras in my sisters cell block to keep an eye on the situation there, then set back to work on the program.

Please don't let us fail...We can't fail...

I see movement on the camera's and watch my sister leave for work.

"Be safe, sis," I whisper, setting back to work. I have to hurry. If I fail...my sister dies. I can't let that happen...

Ivy's POV
As I enter work, I smile and nod at the nicely dressed woman at the ffront desk, as I sign in, using my chip. She greets me by name, then I walk to the lounge to get a cup of coffee, like every morning. I can't do anything out of the ordinary. I can't raise any suspicions.

"Good morning, Ivy," my colleague, James says, just like every morning.

"Morning, James," I reply, filling my cup with the hot, brown liquid and smiling at him, "I'll tell you whether it's good or not after my first cup."

"Ah, one of those days, huh?" He asks, with a laugh.

"It's a Monday," I joke back, as I add creamer and walk out, heading for my block. When I get there, I greet Ron, who tosses me the keys with a smirk. I catch them with ease and smile back at him.

"Today's the day that bastard gets what's been coming to him. You gonna watch the broadcast?" He asks, gesturing to The Prophet's cell.

"Yeah, I might tune in. Been a minute since there's been a good public execution," I reply, sitting at the desk and setting my coffee down.

"You're telling me. I was starting to think we'd done away with them," he laughs, then turns to walk out, adding, "Well see ya later, Ivy. Don't let those freaks scare you."

"See ya, Ron, and no worries there," I call back, letting him out.

Once he's gone, I set to work on doing my rounds. The Prophet hasn't moved from his spot on his bed. The Deviant is now sitting on his bed and glares a hole through me as I walk by. The Mourner narrows his eyes at me, when I pass by him. The Mystic doesn't even look at me, but The Destroyer...he watches me like a hawk.

"I had hoped you'd come to your senses...Guess I was wrong about you," he growls, a look of disappointment in his eyes.

"Let's get one thing straight, Destroyer. You know absolutely nothing about me," I reply, smirking at him, as I move closer to his cell. He pushes off the wall, moving closer too, and once he's close enough to touch, I grab him by the front of his white jumpsuit and pull him against the bars, so I can whisper in his ear, "I might just surprise you, but for now I have to save face or we're all dead. Got that?"

"Hey! Let him go, bitch!" The Deviant shouts to me, and when I turn my head to look at him, he's pressed up against the bars, looking at me like a caged animal who wants to rip me apart.

I turn back to The Destroyer, who's now looking at me with knowing eyes and I smile at him before pushing him back. He stumbles, but easily regains his balance, as I walk away, towards The Deviant and whisper, "That's good. Keep up that facade and you might just get out of here alive."

He frowns, furrowing his brows in confusion, as I smirk at him and walk back to my post. Through the monitors, I watch The Deviant look at The Destroyer with a curious look. The Destroyer smirks at him and nods, but doesn't say anything.

A few hours pass when I hear The Prophet begin to softly sing.

"All we know is time, it's slipping from our lives. A world that kept the truth, hidden in the lies," he sings, with the voice of an angel, familiar to me in some way, "Standing on a stage, bleeding out our youth. Create a holy war, and sell it back to you..."

He continues singing as two guards come in and demand I open his cell. I swallow back my fears, praying Ava can save him in time, as I unlock the door, and they take him away. He glances back at me before they push him down the hall and I know by his look he's heard my silent prayer.

Dad used to tell me stories about their abilities, but I never believed it until now. The Prophet can read minds and if he can do that, then it's likely he can also see the future, like dad said.

Once the guards are gone, I call Ava, who answers on the second ring.

"Ava, they just took him. Can you take care of the camera's from my block to the back exit?" I ask quietly.

"Can I? Sis, I swear you doubt my ability sometimes," She tells me, then says, "And done. Programs almost done. Just plugging in the last codes now. This might actually work, Ivy."

"Great. Don't fail us, sis. I love you," I sigh with relief, smiling and unlocking the cells before me.

"Love you too, sis. Be careful," She replies, then the line goes dead and I grab my keys.

"Come on!" I tell them, "I'm getting you out of here."

"What about The Prophet?" The Deviant demands, as I remove his shackles.

"My sisters got him covered," I explain, "But we gotta move. Now."

"I guess I was wrong about you after all. I really thought you were against us," The Destroyer says with a laugh, as I unlock his shackles, quickly removing The Mystic's and The Mourner's after that and leading them through the deserted hallways.

"Like I said, you know nothing about me," I quietly reply, peeking my head around the corner to check the hallway. It's clear, so I signal for them to follow me, and we race down the hallway, for the exit.

We're going to make it. We have to.

Ava's POV
Just as I'm typing the last codes, two of F.E.A.R.'s guards come bursting through the doors. I look back with wide eyes, as I continue typing. They grab me as I slam the enter key, causing them to release me and remove their black helmets.

The men seem confused and disoriented at first, then they apologize to me and leave without incident.

I fall to my knees, laughing and sobbing in relief, realizing it worked. We did it...We turned off the clips. We freed The Legion.

I click a button on the computer and see the live news broadcast that reads The Prophet's been released and there's chaos for President Harris. We did it. We saved them...but...now what?
