The Preacher's Daughter

Safe and Sound

CC's POV
I drove us to the old man's place, with my sisters guidance. She looks nervously around as we pull down the residential street he lives on. I can tell she's doesn't really want to be here.

"Stop in front of the grey brick house, on the right," She tells me from the back.

I do as she says, stopping on the curb and putting my car in park. I turn back to look at her, before saying, "You don't have to go in with us, if you don't want to."

"You'll never make it past the threshold without me there," She replies bluntly, "We gotta be careful doing this, Chris."

I nod, taking her words into consideration, trying to consider all the variables in this situation as I look up at the house. I then turn back to my little sis and ask, "You're the genius. What's our best method of attack here?"

"If we involve the police, that's going to rile him and my step-mom up immediately. For a semi-peaceful attack, our best bet would be knock, ask to be let in for my stuff. They won't want you and the other Brides traipsing through their house, so you'll wait in the foyer, while Taylor and I go upstairs and pack up my stuff. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, if that," She explains.

"We'll keep them at bay. Just do your thing as quickly as possible," I tell her, as Andy pulls up behind me, followed by Taylor.

"Alright, I can do that...Oh, and Christian?" She replies, waiting for me to meet her gaze again, before adding, "Try not to ruffle too many feathers. This jerks got a lot of guns stashed around the house, so let's try to be rational about this, rather than going in with your guns blazing technique."

"Yeah. I'll try," I grumble, looking back at the house one more time, before stepping out of the car. Grace and Ashley quickly follow. Andy, Jinxx and Jake are hot on our heels, and Taylor runs to catch up.

I knock loudly on the door, then get pushed out of the way by my little sis. She stands in front of me and when the door opens, I see the ugly bastard for the first time in nearly 18 years. He glares up at me, then his eyes train on Grace, making me feel on edge.

"What do you want?" He demands through the glass storm door.

"My stuff. We won't be long," Grace responds, "The boys can stay down in the foyer if you'd like. Taylor and I can pack my stuff."

He carefully looks at each of us, before opening the glass door, letting us in. He sighs and says, "You and Taylor only. The rest stays in the foyer. You have 20 minutes."

"Thank you," She replies, taking Taylor's hand, pulling the girl up the stairs and disappearing onto a room. The old man stands at the base of the stairs to be sure we keep our end of the deal, glaring at hole right through me.

"The fuck you looking at?" I demand, returning his harsh glare with one of my own. He says nothing, just turns his head away from me to look at the bookshelf. Don't tell me he's got a gun stashed there and is seriously considering grabbing it.

"Order up!" I hear from above, pulling me from my thoughts, as a large stuffed bear comes flying down at Ashley and Andy. They catch it with ease and Andy carries it out to the car.

"Put it in the front," I tell him, as he walks out, and he holds up a hand to signal he heard me.

"Next!" Taylor calls out, as two trash bags of bedding come raining down. I catch one, while Jake catches the other. Jake shifts his hold and takes the other from me, walking out as Andy walks back in.

"Chris?" I hear from beside me, and when I look up, I see Grace leaning over the railing, halfway up the stairs. She holds a box and when I grab it from her, it's heavier than I was expecting.

"I'll take that," Ash says, pulling the box from my hands and carrying it out. Taylor brings out another box, similar to the first, which she passes to me and this time Jinxx takes it. This keeps up for about 10 minutes, before Taylor and her walk all the way down to us, carrying either end of a large black and silver trunk in one hand. Taylor holds two small duffle bags in her free arm, while Grace has a backpack strung along her back and two large framed posters.

When they get to the bottom of the stairs, Grace's eyes widen, as if she's forgotten something. I grab the truck handle from her as well as the posters and nod my chin towards the stairs. She passes me a smile, then bolts up the stairs as far as her legs can carry her.

"There's not enough room for that in your car. Put it in the back of mine," Andy tells me, placing the keys in my pocket. I nod, following Taylor out the door to Andy's SUV. I set the posters down, leaning them against the car, before pulling out Andy's keys and unlocking it. I pop the latch on the back, pushing the door up and we load the trunk in first. I grab the posters, which slide in nicely beside it and Taylor puts the two duffle bags in. As we walk back to the house, Grace and the rest of my band come outside.

I pass Andy back his keys, then head for my car. I wait until Grace is next to me and now I see what she forgot. It's a large decorative box, that must hold something precious to her inside, judging by the look she has on her face and the way she hugs it tightly to her chest.

"What's in there?" I ask, holding the back door open for her.

"Memories," She tells me, sliding inside and opening the box.

Inside I see every letter I'd ever sent her, before she had a cellphone, wrapped in a thick, black ribbon that reminds me of the one she used to wear around her neck all the time. A stack of pictures of mom, her and me are wrapped in a thin black ribbon. The bracelet mom got her when she turned 16. All of BVB's CD's, minus our newest one. The Oriental lucky tassel and decorative fan I brought back for her, during one of our tours in Japan. The seashell necklace and bracelet I picked up in Australia and the mini snowglobes from London and Paris. A journal with her initials that mom had made for her one Christmas and two dried and pressed flowers. One with a blue ribbon, the other an orange and paper tags hanging from them. The last item is a red rose corsage with babies breath surrounding it, a black ribbon hanging from it. Tied to the end a tag that reads "Taylor Jameson. Senior Prom." followed by a date.

"I had to hide it under the floorboards, under my bed. That's why I almost forgot it," She tells me in a bitter tone, closing the box again.

I think I already know the answer, but I ask anyway, "Why'd you have to hide it?"

"If I didn't, dad would have destroyed it," She murmurs, taking the backpack off and setting it in the seat beside her. She moves over, letting Ash in, and I close my eyes as I shut the door.

I can't help the anger that flares up inside me, as I look back to the house. I sling open my door, locking the car, engaging the child safety locks so they can't get out, and slam the door behind me.

Making my way back to the house, I hear muffled shouting and it sounds like Grace is beating on the window. I don't care. This bastard's going to get it for what he put my baby sister through.

I pound on the door until he answers it, then deck him across the face as hard as I can. I hear a muffled scream from the car and once I'm sure he's down for the count, I lean over him and growl, "Stay the fuck away from my sister, because next time I'll kill you."

I walk back to the car, unlocking it, and Grace runs to me. She hugs me tightly, then shout, "What the fuck do you think you're doing?"

"Doing what I should've done a long time ago," I tell her, wrapping my arm around her and leading her back to the car.

As I help her back into the car, Andy drives up beside me and says, "Nice punch, although I'd get out of here before he calls the police."

"It's not the police I'm worried about," I tell him, "Far as I'm concerned, let them come. They should know what this dick's been doing to my sister."

When I look back to my sister, she's shaking and Ash is trying his best to comfort her, to no avail. I sigh, gently shutting the door, then get in the driver's seat and take off. This time Taylor leads us and I'm happy to see she lives all the way on the other side of town from that creep. He'll never find Grace here.

"Graceland," I say, looking through the mirror at her, as I park, "I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have done that. It just pisses me off that he did all that to you
I promise, it won't happen again."

She nods, her eyes darting between mine in the mirror and the box of memories in her lap. She then whispers, "Thank you for protecting me, Chris."

I allow a small smile to creep onto my face as I turn to her and say, "Anytime, Graceland. Now let's get you settled into your new home."

She smiles in return, nodding, as I unlock the car and help her out.

Once we moved what little she had into the guest room of Taylor's apartment, Grace thanks me again, setting to work on unpacking after setting the box of memories on her desk, right in the open, which makes her smile happily.

She then sets to work on the closet, hanging up her dresses and shirts, putting everything else in the dresser drawers at the foot of the closet. She separates the shirts and dresses so the vanity mirror is visible, but when she looks at her reflection, her eyes turn sad.

"Hey. Don't do that to yourself," I tell her softly, pulling her away from the mirror and sitting with her on the bed, "You're beautiful and I'm not just saying that because I'm your brother. I mean it, and you'll be even more beautiful when we get you back to 100%, alright?"

She looks up at me through her thick, black lashes and smiles, before nodding and thanking me again. She flings herself into my arms, making me laugh as I pull her into another strong hug.

She's finally safe. Finally home with us. The people she was meant to be with from the start. She lives as far as she can from him and still be in L.A. but now she's a 5 minute car ride from me and a couple blocks away from mom. She'll be safe here and feel like I can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
