Into The Night

Broken things and belt buckles

Later that night after Cooper and Adison went home, I was in my office typing a new chapter for my book. "Hey, babe, can you come here for a sec?" I heard Mathias say loudly from the other room. I closed out my new chapter and logged out of the computer. As I was walking out of the office, I saw Mochi dart into my office. As I looked into the living room, I saw Mathias sitting on the edge of the couch with his phone in his hands. I walked over to him slowly, not knowing what to say. "Before you say anything, I want, well actually need, to know if you love me." He said firmly.
"Of course I do, why?" I asked, leaning against the wall nearest to him. "Well, girls who are generally happy in relationships or claim to love their boyfriends don't go around swapping phone numbers with the local freak." He said, standing up and walking closer to me. "Babe, please calm down. It's not what you think." I said stepping away from him. "Then what is it?" He said eerily calm like. "We're just friends. Nothing more." I said walking towards to bedroom. I don't think I've ever seen him move so fast before and been as scared as I was then, the next thing I knew was he had a fistful of my hair and was shaking me around. I started crying out of fear and anger; fear of not knowing what was about to happen and anger at myself for letting this happen. "Ouch! Please let me go, Mathias!" I yelled. "If you're not more than friends with him then why are you trying to get away from me?! If you were telling the truth, you wouldn't be trying to get away!" He yelled at me.
"Stop that crying, you weren't crying when you were getting his phone number this morning." He said as he threw me into the bedroom. I knocked into his dresser before falling on the floor, pulling down a few of his bottles of cologne with me. I laid on the floor, sobbing and not knowing what to do other than calling the police.
As I reached for my phone, Mathias hit me across the back with what felt like a belt. I only say it was a belt because it felt like the buckle of one hit my knuckles as I was reaching into my back pocket. I screamed and quickly pulled my fingers away from my phone. When it was relatively quiet for a moment, I heard a knock at the door. "Alice, it's Jake. Is everything okay in there? I thought I heard someone screaming." He said loudly. "I'm not done with you." Mathias said quietly before storming off. The person I heard answer the door wasn't the person that was just standing in here with me. The person at the door was kind and polite; The person that was in here was cold hearted and jealous.
I slowly sat up, trying to not hurt myself anymore than I already was. When I was sitting up, I heard the door close and then heavy footsteps start walking towards me. I started panicking and tried to move faster than I previously had been. I tried to move one way my body did not want to move and this caused me to start crying again. Mathias came back to the room and saw me, crying and trying to get up to move away from him.
"Alice, I don't know what happened. I'm sorry. Let me help you." He said taking a step toward me, I flinched back from him and fell back down. "Please leave me alone, Mathias." I said crying, getting up again knowing which way to not turn this time. I could see the hurt in his eyes, but that didn't matter to me. What mattered is that he lost his temper with me over something so small and it's like I didn’t know who he was.
I slowly made my way into the bathroom, plopping down onto the toilet before bursting into tears again. This time I pulled out my phone and pulled up Jake's contact.
Me- "Thank you for checking up on me! The cat just caught a mouse is all :)" I quickly typed before sitting my phone down and taking my clothes off slowly. I went and stood in front of the mirror, looking at my back as much as I could. I could see a long bruise begin to start forming across my back. I wiped my face with the back of my hand as I began running the bath water. I rummaged through the top of the closet looking for either a bath bomb or bubble bath. After what seemed like hours of searching I found a small hotel bottle of bubble bath. As I poured the bubble bath in, I looked around for a clean towel and found an oversized one that was like a blanket.
I took a good look at the front of me before getting into the shower, my lip was bleeding slightly and so was my knuckle. I sighed and put my hair up into a messy bun before getting into the tub to soak. I'm not too sure on how long I just sat in the tub, I just know that at some point the water got cold and I needed to turn on the shower to rinse off. After I rinsed off, I grabbed the towel I had picked out and wrapped it around myself. I slowly opened the door to the bedroom and peeked out. I noticed that all the things that had been on the floor were put neatly back in their place on his dresser. I was glad to see that the door was closed and Mathias wasn't in the bed. I opened up the door more so I could finally leave the bathroom and get dressed.
I picked out an old shirt the Adison had given me and a pair of old flannel pants before settling into bed. I was almost asleep when I realized I had left my phone in the bathroom. Sighing, I slowly got up and went to get it. When I got it, I saw that I had a new message from Jake.
Jake- "If you say so. Just let me know if you need anything."
I sat back down on the bed and thought a moment before replying.
Me- "Will do!"
I put my phone on the bedside table before I stretched out and pulled the blankets up to my chin. It took a while, but I fell asleep after tossing and turning a bit.
I woke up the next morning feeling Mochi climbing all over me and meowing. I rubbed my eyes before pulling her up to me and rubbing the top of her head. I slowly sat up, feeling my joints popping and and my muscles stretching. I looked at my phone to see this message from Mathias.
Mathias- "Alice, I don’t know what came over me last night. I really am sorry. I'm going to leave the city for a few days; I think we both need time apart to think of what happened. I love you, sweetheart."
Me- "I think that's a good idea. I'm not even sure of what I feel for you anymore after seeing that side of you."
I started crying after I sent that, I knew I still loved him. Yet, last night he showed me just how incompatible we were with each other.
All I needed right now was someone's unbiased advice slash opinion.
I pulled up Jake's contact and started typing out a text, which just ended up in me calling him.
After ringing a few times, he answered. "Hello?" He said groggily. "Hey, Jake. It's Alice. I was wondering if maybe you'd want to come over and maybe have some breakfast with me?" I asked softly. "I'd love that actually. I'll be over in about 30 minutes, if that sounds good to you." He said sounding more awake this time.
"Perfect, see you then. Bye." I said hanging up the phone. I slowly got up and went to grab a pair a sports bra. As I walked into the closet, I saw most of Mathias's clothes were strewn about and a few pieces of his luggage were missing as well.
It seemed as if he was going to be gone longer than a few days which was perfectly fine with me.
I pulled my shirt off and put on the sports bra before putting the shirt I slept in back on. I made my way to the living room and saw that the blanket and pillow Mathias more than likely slept with were neatly stacked on the end of the couch.
It was then I heard a strong knock at the door, I quickly walked over to it and pulled it open.
I saw two uniformed police officers waiting behind it.
"Are you Alice Grace?" One of them asked softly. When I nodded my head, he took a deep breath and said "We need to come in and speak with you about your boyfriend, Mathias Nixon."
-Jinxx's POV-
I had stayed up most of the night wondering what had happened to Alice. I knew her boyfriend couldn't be trusted and had bad intentions. When he answered to door last night I could hear him thinking 'Go away. You're the cause of all this, freak.'.
I mainly ignored his thoughts most of time, but they bothered me last night. I tried listening for Alice's thoughts but couldn't hear her. I went home and called Jake to see what he may think of this whole situation. When I told Jake what was going on, he said he'd be over shortly and that I should probably relax and have a drink.
I went over to the fridge and pulled out of bag of O negative. I tour the bag open with my teeth and drank a little before pouring the rest into two wine glasses. I poured my glass, then Jake's. I sat Jake's back in the fridge so it could stay cold. I swirled the blood around in the glass, thinking about what might have been happening to Alice a few doors down. As I took a sip of my drink, I walked over to the couch and slowly sat down. I closed my eyes for a moment and just listened to the minds around me. I heard the neighbor that separates mine and Alice's apartment.
They were so sad, it sounded like someone important to them never came around anymore. Since the neighbor was an elderly woman, I'm guessing it might have been her children or maybe her grandchildren if she had any. I noticed she mentioned that she only ever sees them only on important days, like holidays and birthdays. That they never check up on her or return her calls. That the only person she'd wonder would miss her if she were to die was her last living friend from when she was a child.
I felt a sadness start to creep over me. I couldn't ever imagine growing old and then my children begin to not see me as important anymore.
That's when I heard death's voice start to creep in. He greeted her like an old friend. I listened to them talk for a while, the woman offered him a cup of tea.
He graciously declined and after a while asked if she was ready to go. She seemed to stop for a moment and think before saying yes. Then, her thoughts stopped.
I opened my eyes and wiped my face. I took a sip of my drink again, walking over to the door to open it for Jake. I heard him coming, might as well save him the energy from having to knock.
He came in, walking slowly towards to fridge. "So…" He said slowly grabbing his wine glass out of the fridge.
"Jake, Alice looks just like Morrigan. I've been trying to not get close to her all these years, but now I can't help it. I heard the awful things her boyfriend was thinking about her and all I wanted was to help her. I need your help with this man." I said quietly, finishing off my drink. I looked over at Jake to see him roll his eyes. "You need to forget about Morrigan. She left not just you, but all of us on that battlefield that day to die." He said sternly. "I do know that you loved her and she loved you, but her actions didn't seem to portray that to us." He continued, softer this time.
He sat by me and patted me on the back, signaling that I could finish saying what I needed to say. I then talked on and on for the next 2 hours about how I felt a small connection with Alice; However, the fact that her boyfriend was there and was thinking of proposing to her sometime soon wasn't a good sign I'd have a chance with her
When I was in the middle of a sentence, I heard Alice's boyfriend start thinking about someone he has on the side somewhere else. This made my blood boil.
He had a beautiful girl, yet he's going to cheat on her.
"Jake, please help me break them up." I blurted out. Jake looked a bit taken aback when I said that. He started shaking his head and started backing away from me. "No no no. The last time I helped you do that, I almost died!" He said getting off the couch and began pacing in front of me.
"Jake, you don't have to if you don't want to." I sighed. "I'm going to help you, I just don't know how yet." he said looking at me with a crooked smile on his face.
