Into The Night

I rolled over in bed and snuggled closer to Mathias. I enjoyed times like this, times when no one has to say anything and you can still tell what they mean. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me to him. "Happy birthday, sweetheart." He said softly. I smiled and said "Thank you." We laid like that for a few more minutes, just enjoying each others company and the silence.
He was the first to break the silence saying "I wish I didn't have to leave for that business trip tonight." (Mathias is a stock broker and has to travel frequently for his job.) "That's okay, honey. You're job needs you, and sometimes it has to take you away for a little bit." I said sitting up, putting my hair into a messy bun.
Mathias sat up and wrapped an arm around me, kissing my neck. I pulled away from him. "You still need to pack…" I said looking down at my hands. He sighed before getting off the bed and walking to the closet. I watched as he began packing some of his clothes, throwing things haphazardly into his bag. I got off the bed and started to make my way towards the kitchen to make a bowl of cereal. I stopped in my tracks when I got to the edge of the kitchen when I thought I saw a shadow move behind the glass that lead to my office. I grabbed a knife off of the island before walking towards the door.
I placed my hand gently on the handle before pushing it down and slowly opening the door. I let the door open partially before hearing Mathias call my name, as soon as he did that, my black cat Mochi came strutting out of my office. I breathed a sigh of relief as I walked back over to the island and set the knife down.
I picked Mochi up and took her with me back to the room. "Yes, babe?" I said walking in slowly. He had a small wrapped box in his hands, one that could only come from Tiffany's. "I thought you might like your birthday gift now." He said taking a step towards me. I put Mochi down and thought 'Is this it?! Is this how he's going to finally propose to me?!'. I walked towards him and took the box. I began unwrapping it, my fingers were shaking as I opened the box. I felt my heart drop a little as soon as I saw it was a necklace. It was such a beautiful necklace, but I thought he and I had reached that point in our relationship.
It was a silver key with yellow diamonds on the handle. He helped me put the necklace on and whispered in my ear as he brushed my hair back "Because you, my dear, hold the key to my heart." I giggled and then turned around, kissing him. "I love it." I said pulling away slowly. He laughed and turned back around to finish hanging some things in up. "You should go get ready for the day, I want to take you out for breakfast." He said over his shoulder. I walked into my closet next to the bathroom and started looking through all of my clothes. I finally decided on a wine colored long sleeve shirt with a nude colored skirt and a pair of black pumps.
I was finishing straightening my hair when Mathias came in and wrapped his arms around me. "Ready to go?" He said looking at us in the mirror. He ended up choosing a dark blue sweater that hugged his muscles and a pair of khakis. I nodded my head, turning off my straightener.
He stood back, looking me up and down. "You look amazing." He said kissing my cheek. I smiled and began walking to the door. "Ready to go?" I asked putting on my coat. He nodded as he pulled his coat on and grabbing his wallet from the table by the door.
As we were walking down the hallway, one of our neighbors we really talk to walked past us. His long black hair was always messy and he constantly wore dark colors. He was always in a hurry or seemed like he was in pain. He bumped into Mathias and as he turned around, it seemed like we stared at each other for an eternity before he mumbled "Sorry." before hurrying off.
Mathias put his hand on my lower back before scoffing and saying "Weirdo." as we started walking again.
I had this strange feeling in the pit of my stomach now, I needed to know that mysterious neighbor of mine.
We reached the elevator at the end of our hallway and hit the down button. "So, any particular place in mind for lunch?" He said as we walked onto the elevator. I shook my head and thought for a moment. "Surprise me." I said, smiling at him.
He smiled, chuckling as we reached the garage. "Okay, birthday girl." We walked to his car and got in. He started driving to this little diner we would go to on dates in high school. "How'd I know you'd choose this old place?" I said smiling. He lead us to a booth in the back and as we sat down, his phone started ringing. He looked at and sighed, getting up. "I have to take this, I'll be right back." he said walking off. I took this chance to pull out my phone and text Cooper and Adison.
Me- "Soooo, he gave me a necklace."
Cooper- "Oooh fancy. Do you think he's gonna get a ring sometime soon?"
Adison- "I doubt it, he can't take a hint. Like ever."
Me- "I'm sure a ring will be here soon, guys. I think he might get called in early for work today…"
Cooper and Adison-"Yeah, 'work'."
I rolled my eyes and put my phone away as Mathias walked back to the table. He looked like he had bad news and I braced myself to be told he had to leave an hour or two early today.
"Babe, I'm sorry I've got to leave now." He said holding his hand out to me. I waved his hand away and said "It's okay, I'll just walk home.". His face fell a bit as I said that, he nodded though and kissed me on the cheek.
"I'll see you soon, and happy birthday." He said walking off. I sat in the booth for a good thirty minutes and then gathered my things. I saw my neighbor from earlier walking past the diner across the street as I was leaving. "Hey, you!" I yelled. Running across the street, I saw him turn to look at me. That's when I heard tires squealing and turned to see a car barreling towards me. I stood there like a deer in the headlights, then the next minute I wasn’t standing there anymore. I saw that my neighbor had me in his arms and we were on the side of the street I just came from. I looked at him and saw that he had dark red eyes, not like the chocolate brown ones I saw earlier. "What's your name?" I said softly, pulling away from him. "My name is Jake." He said letting me go and walking away. I don't know what just happened, but I needed to figure it out.
