Sorrowed Souls

BBF to the Rescue

A/N: Came across this picture while searching for lillalexandras. I originally left the appearance of your best friend up to you to imagine, but I saw this photo and I was like... Yes. Yes, this is her.

Also, friendly reminder that _______ is your name!
Enjoy!

The worst things come when you don't expect them.
They jump out at you like a monster in the ocean, a shark fin grazing your body. And then that shark hops out, taking you for itself.
You didn't expect that monster when you returned to Andy's house, your best friend parking and following right behind.
You didn't expect two disasters in one day. Things like that just don't happen, and yet...
And yet a hurricane followed the tsunami.
You stared at Andy's living room, the couch slashed into thirds, toilet paper cast across the floor, the question LOST IT ALL?? engraved onto the coffee table with red lipstick. You let out a small breath of relief, seeing it unbroken; you were rather fond of that coffee table.
But the rest...
The rest was as if a hurricane blew through the home.
"Juliet..." Andy breathed, and the grip he had on your hand slipped away. You knew his fingers had curled into a fist, fingers digging into palm and knuckles turning a lighter shade of pale.
"What's—" Your bestie stopped in the doorway, leaning over to see past you before you heard her breath catch.
"What the..."
"She trashed the place," Andy stated, striding into the living room.
"How'd she get in?"
Andy gave a small sigh, leaning over, both hands brushing through thick hair. You watched the tendrils pass one by one, something about it reminding you of blades of grass.
"Back door, maybe," he said, and for the first time you noticed the gaping hole in the back of the room, glass door shattered. You realized Andy was being a little sarcastic.
A flame to numb the pain.
"She's good at jumping fences," Andy continued. straightening and putting his hands in the pockets of his jeans. "Goes back a long ways."
You weren't sure what he meant by that, but he just leaned forward, long arms reaching to the coffee table and one finger smearing the beginning of the lipsticked writing.
"Same shade..."
You just quietly cleared your throat, rocking from one side to the other. Your knee hurt a little, a random joint strained from stress.
You three talked for a moment, light words with lighter meaning. This place was trashed, ruined, soiled with disorganization.
It didn't stop Andy from cleaning, though.
He picked up a few things, fetched cleaner and a washcloth for the unbroken table.
If we stand together, we will be unbroken!
So, getting past the own fog of your brain, you moved. You picked up some of the stuffing from the couch, insides that had been strewn onto the floor. And then Andy stopped you with a gentle touch of the shoulder.
"Let me make you something," he said, quiet. "Tea?"
You looked over at him, gently smiling.
"Yeah."
He turned to your friend. "What about you?" he asked. "Tea? Coffee?"
She grinned, a knowing expression to her face as she sat on an untouched part of the couch.
"Pringles?"
Andy copied her expression—some joke in between them.
"Sure."
And while Andy went to make tea, your best friend looked over to you, fist supporting her jaw.
"What's up, bestie?" she said quietly. "How you holdin' up?"
"After this," you laughed, your voice raised with question. "I think Andy is the one we should worry about."
To your surprise, your bestie shook her head, blue fringe falling across her left eye.
"Nah," she said, waving a hand. "He's okay. He'll get by."
You just thought about that Real Friends song, nearly missing the question that was asked.
So are you okay?
Tears threatened to prick your eyes, a whirlwind of emotion spun by your parents, by the last few days in general.
"You don't care," you said.
She smiled with mostly her eyes.
"Of course I do," she said. "I'm your BBF."
Best Best Friend. You cracked out a smile at the inside joke, eyes still filled with tears. The tide in your eyes broke to droplets as she reached over, gently touching your hand.
"You wanna know the worst thing I ever did?"
"What?" you sniffed.
Her expression faded into a small smile.
"I hated myself, for years. And I let someone else dictate my happiness. I thought he was so caring, but really he was a giant asshole. And I gave myself to him, because I thought that meant happiness.
"I shouldn't have
I couldn't have
and yet, I did."
"But..." You looked down, wrists passing against all the bracelets you wore. You looked, for a moment, at your BVB ones—one on each wrist—and tears came to your eyes for the third time in twenty-four hours.
"Hey..." She put a hand to your shoulder, trying to meet your eyes. "Heyo..."
You smiled a little at the inside joke—the greeting you two always texted each other. And then that smile faded.
"I'm nothing... but a burden..."
Your friend just gave a subtle look of worry, and then turned her gaze to the kitchen.
"Andy," she called, "talk some sense into—"
You clapped a hand over her mouth, snapback falling off and pinned against her back and the couch.
"Don't you dare!" you said as she struggled, eventually digging in between your hand and her mouth, prying you away.
"Dang," she drawled. "You got a grip like a rhinoceros, girl!"
Adjusting her hat back on, you looked around for Andy. But the appearance he'd made was short-lived. His voice came in from another room, so he was ambling again. Pacing back in forth, from worry and stress, most likely...
You wish you could take it away...
He sighed, pulling out his phone.
"I need to call the cops," he said. "Get some type of restraining order; this is too much to not go un-punished."
And he made the call, part of your mind fully there. And when the voice on the other line clicked off into silence, your friend spoke.
"So wha—"
"Do we do now?" you filled in. Your head bowed before shaking from side to side, filling in the words that were lost on you. "No clue. Andy, you got—"
You turned to your boyfriend, who met your eyes but didn't stop eating. Another Pringle went in his mouth, chewed slowly as your bestie gagged on a laugh but not a smile.
"Great," you said, straightening. "Glad we're all accounted for."
"Sure thing, babe." And even as Andy stood to brush the Pringle dust off his pants, your heart leaped at the nickname.
First time he's
"Hellooo?" A hand waved in front of your face; you noticed Andy was gone, leaving you and your bestie alone. "Earth to _______."
"S-Sorry."
"Right here, _______," Andy called from the kitchen. "Anyone want some Pringles?"
"What is with you and Pringles?!" you countered, leaving both two fattos knuckleheads to laugh/chuckle lowly.
"Inside joke while yous was sleepin' this mornin'!" your blue-haired friend sang.
Ugh. Sometimes you hated people people just weren't your thing.
Another sigh drifted from you, bowing your back before your posture straightened again. Drawing you up like a puppet with strings, master controlling.
You could do this. You could get through today. You just had to focus.
A knock at the door. Your thoughts, your confidence, and your place on the coffee table vanished. Andy was already opening the door, putting a hand out to the front living area, welcoming the officers. They both stepped in, and part of you was surprised to see one was a woman. She was beautiful—a little short but her deep eyes and blonde ringlets captured your focus.
"Hey." Your bestie nudged you in between two ribs. "Go get the Pringles—I have an idea."
