I'll Bring A War

The morning light greets me as my eyes gently flicker open. I quickly correct the confusion I feel at my surroundings by remembering the previous day’s events of arriving at the camp. I remind myself of Marge and her hollow metal home and relax slightly. “Good morning.” The voice frightens me as I jump and try to move away but before I can run I am gently held down by Ashley as I remember what happened that night. Relief floods me as I exhale and take in his gorgeous face above my own and start to thank him for letting me sleep. “Kiera it’s okay, honestly if you can’t sleep again I’ll do the same thing or one of the other guys can if you’d like. Just let us help okay?” he laughs. I nod at him appreciating the uninterrupted sleep I had like it was the greatest gift I had ever received. We promptly wash me in the shared showers and Ashley returning to his quarters and when I return to Marge I see that my ruined clothes from the city have been replaced with a new black top and trousers along with black combat boots. I nod to myself, liking the black colour scheme and thank Marge changing into my new clothes and leaving for breakfast at the communal campfire at the centre of the camp.

Everyone gathered there is young and able to fight and Andy sands up to talk to us, “In the coming weeks we will engage in vigorous training. We plan to rescue our brothers and sisters from the Temple of F.E.A.R as soon as we can. To do that we need each and every one of you to give us all of the effort you have to help us defeat the corrupted government of F.E.A.R. We have sorted you into training groups and Jinxx has the lists so see him each day after breakfast to find out who to go to for training. Ashley, CC and Jake will be in charge of training whilst Jinxx and I chip in when we have time and tend to our usual duties and start on a strategy. Any questions?” No one makes a move, “Brilliant,” Andy says, “As soon as breakfast is finished with see Jinxx and we’ll proceed to training.” I finish my breakfast of watery oats and bread and approach Jinxx, joining the line of people awaiting information.

My training group consists of twenty people, all in the same all black clothing and all looking young and healthy. The high level of focus and anticipation can be felt in the air and is dominating to a newcomer like me. My nerves are eased when a blonde slender woman with friendly brown eyes approaches me, “Hi,” she says, “I’m Juliet.” Her smile is wide and reaches her eyes, I introduce myself, “Hey, I’m Kiera.”
“I know,” she laughs, “Everyone knows who you are.”
“Really?” I’m shocked at the idea.
“Well everyone knows about the attack on your city and about the new people brought back. Also I’m with Andy so I get all the inside information, they think you’re special," she says bluntly in excitement. “Special?” I inquire.
“Well they know about your past, and obviously your brother; very sorry to hear about that by the way.” She grabs my hand tenderly, “But we’ll get him back Kiera, try not to worry. They think that you are more capable than most of the rebels here with your fighting skills and survival ability. Also, between you and me, I’ve heard one of the guys has taken a little liking to you.” Juliet raises her eyebrows suggestively and nudges my elbow as Ashley walks past us and smiles at me. I turn back to her after the brief interaction and she nods her head at me slowly, grinning. “No,” I laugh, hitting her jokingly on the shoulder and we stumble around giggling like children. The laughter dies down as CC arrives, a serious look upon his face and I am grateful for Juliet’s company as the tension in the air arises once more.

Training starts promptly. It consists of us learning how to hold, use and handle various weapons as an introduction. After this we choose the weapon we feel most comfortable with, me settling for a sword very similar to the one Ashley picked out for me at the start of our journey to the camp and I smile to myself at his accuracy so soon after knowing me. The sword rests comfortably around my waist and down my right leg. Once we have picked our weapon we take it in turns to practise fighting on a dummy as CC helps us with our attack. Upon my turn I approach the dummy and strike it powerfully on the arm before ducking and spinning to the back of the doll before piercing my strong stone sword powerfully through the abdomen, earning a small smile and a pleased nod from CC as he struggles to criticise my performance. I rejoin the group, Juliet grinning proudly at me and clapping silently in my direction and I jokingly bowed down at my new friend laughing myself, happy at the new friendship that I had made. The day passes by swiftly as the activities carry on and Juliet and I continue to enjoy ourselves whenever we have a chance to cackle quietly to ourselves without CC knowing.

The evening meal is gratefully received by everyone as our stomachs grumble angrily from the exercise of the day. Just as I am about to sit down around the campfire with the rest of the rebels Juliet, accompanied by another girl, calls my name. “Kiera, come with us.” When I get to them she grabs my arm excitedly and pulls me towards the building where the guys lived. I look at the other girl with confusion and she wastes no time in settling my unasked question, “Alice, Jinxx’s partner.” I nod my head in recognition as we reach the doorway of the largest small building. On the inside it was similar to all of the others in that the sandy rooms were scarcely furnished, yet they still seemed to speak a huge sense of character within the obviously loved and appreciated home. “Andy, we brought Kiera.” Juliet announces as we enter the presumably kitchen diner, living room where all five of the guys as well as another woman were sprawled out on the rags on the floor eating the camp food. An extra plate is sat on the side, as if they were expecting me and within seconds I find myself smiling as Juliet starts recalling the events of the day. I find that the serious and intimidating impression of the guys melt away when we are all laughing at a joke told by Alice and I feel at ease with them. The taste of the food is unnoticeable as we eat quickly and happily, deep in conversation.

Once the food is finished, we spread further out in the small living room our bellies full. Juliet and Andy are deep in a serious looking conversation whilst I observe CC, Jake and Inna, Jinxx and Alice laughing over something CC said. “A penny for your thoughts?” Ashley’s voice interrupts my observation and I laugh admitting, “I like people watching.” He laughs back at my intrusive habit before saying, “Remember I said I wanted to show you something?” I nod, recalling the conversation. “Well with returning last night and settling everyone in, I forgot to nab you to show you. Want to see now?” He offers his hand out to me and I take it as we stand up and leave the room.
