Sanctuary

#1

It was getting late, and I was starting to get nervous. I knew, according to my schematics, I was closing distance on the next government shelter, but I still didn’t actually see it anywhere. It was also a toss-up as to what kind of condition it would be in, this far out from civilization. Whether or not it had been maintained enough to be truly a safe-haven from the vampire scourge remained to be seen. Still, it was better than just walking around in the open at night. There was a possibility of sleep with sanctuary. I started jogging when I saw the sun start to get swallowed by the horizon.

Being on my own, I had a lot of time to reflect. I supposed I liked it that way; I was never very good in typical social situations. Nor could I stand holding down a regular, 9-5 job in the cities. Thus why it just made sense to be scavenger. I brought people what they needed or wanted, and I got paid well for my services. Most of the money went to equipment and food, but I had a decent amount left over for fun times.

Just as the sun had become nothing but a narrow sliver in the sky, I saw the shelter up ahead. It was a smaller one, and the specs had said it was older. It looked it; it had those brick walls. Originally, they had all been made with garlic-infused bricks, before they discovered that the effect only lasted a decade or so before wearing off. Still, a sturdy wall was a sturdy wall, and I was hoping to get some sleep.

I found the entrance, and was thankful that it appeared in decent condition. However, when I turned the handle, the door was locked. Shit! What were the fucking chances of someone else being so far out at the same time? Fuck!

I banged on the door, starting to panic. “I’m human, I’m wearing a garlic necklace, you can see it!” I shoved one of the cloves in my mouth, “See? I’n hooman, I can uut it in y mouf!” I spat the clove out when, to my relief, the door slowly opened.

Dang! The guy opening the door was super-hot! Enough so that I was totally thrown for a loop and left speechless. He swung the door inwards and I stepped past him with a nod. I turned to watch him lock it after me, and was pleased to see him doing so correctly.

Now came the difficult part. As much as vampires were the primary danger at night, they weren’t the only one out here. Most of the people in the wild zone weren’t scavengers; they were exiles from the cities, criminals, and generally bad people. It was time to find out just what kind of man I was bunking down with for the night (i.e., if I needed to try and kill him or not).

I took a cursory glance throughout the shelter. Originally two beds, one was collapsed. No windows or openings, roof intact. Looked like a possible wash station and a faucet with filtration for potable water. It would do.

I looked at my new buddy. He appeared nervous and unhappy that I was there, which was a good sign. All the would-be rapists I had run into were always friendly as could be from the very start. A female scavenger was a rarity.

Again I was struck by his attractiveness, but I tried to brush it off. He had remarkably light, blue eyes, and cheekbones most city women would pay plenty for. I forced a smile, “Thanks for letting me in. Being outside at night is rough.”

He gave me a half-hearted, close-lipped smile and nodded before moving past me to sit on one of the two benches. Damn, he was tall! “You mute?”

He shook his head, and the fact that he didn’t reply made the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Something was off. “Then what’s your name?” I didn’t expect him to give it to me, but the question called for some manner of response.

He sighed. “Andy.”

Notes

Hope you enjoy the beginning of this newest story of mine. It will be shorter; I've already written the whole thing in advance of posting.

Let me know what you think! :3

Happy Earth Day!

In that context, it means, 'I am glad that you ended up enjoying it by the time you finished.'
