After Life

#3

It was nighttime, and I found myself with nothing to do. Meaning, of course, that no one was around with which to play. I decided to try and improve my skill at leaving marks on the corporeal world. Thus far, while I was able to do things like tearing leaves and breaking twigs, I had dreams of something bigger, something more impressive. For example, wouldn’t it be novel if I could score some large scratches into the stone of the castle itself? I tittered to myself, thinking of how frightened the docents would be!

Thus I started walking the grounds of the castle, looking for stones with which to practice. It took some looking, but I eventually came upon a small collection of flattened, disc-shaped rocks alongside a twisted, metal nail in the midst of the field East of the castle.

I had a seat and was focusing all my energy on moving the nail towards the nearest stone, when something in the periphery of my vision broke my concentration. I looked up, slightly irritated, and got a terrible start! That young woman was back again, still dressed in nothing but a tunic!

I watched her, and it wasn’t clear if she was weeping or doing some sort of otherworldly, occultist’s dance. I was loathe to leave my little project, it would, doubtless, take some time to find again… but my curiosity got the better of me.

I stood and walked towards her until I felt myself brush up against the barrier. Feeling incredibly awkward and inappropriate, I nevertheless cleared my throat and called out, “Miss?”

She turned and looked right at me! I was so surprised, I said nothing, just taking a step back and barely controlling the profound urge to run away. My thoughts raced wildly, incoherent. 'She must be the most powerful medium in the world, what if she can control me, why does she look so sad, should I be scared, why does she look worried…' and on and on, as I stood there, dumbfounded.

But in a moment’s time, it was all over! She met my gaze, shrieked, and then fled into the woods!

Good Heavens! What exactly was I supposed to make of that? Completely stumped, I sat down right where I stood, lost in contemplation.

I was definitely unsure what to think of her. I had no idea what she was, what she wanted, or why she ran from me. But one thing I knew for sure; she was the most exciting development since my head had been cleft from my body! It might be courting danger, but I wanted to know more!

Since I couldn’t pursue her, I reasoned I would have to beckon her closer to me. Logically, there was really only one way to do that, and I had already seen it fail, twice now. Thus, I would have to innovate!

I resolved that, instead of aspiring to place eerie claw-like marks in my castle walls, I would simply have to engrave the strange woman a message, some sort of friendly sign on a stone. I was fairly confident that, if I waited until it was the witching hour, and the fog was intense, I’d be able to sling a small rock far enough to pass through the trees. The real challenges would be carving into the stone itself, as well as figuring out what to write.

After some looking, I found my small pile of rocks and the nail again, and I set to work. As I willed myself to move the nail against the stones, I pondered what could possible convey benign intentions across the ages. While I was perfectly literate, the language used in that day and age was hardly the same. Though I had learned to follow the oral discourse of the visitors, I had no idea how to write such vulgar, crude nonsense!

Thus, I decided I would have to carve a symbol, not use words. Some sort of universal ode to friendship and well-being. Just what was best eluded me, and I lost my patience for new trials and travails after I had managed to make two very small dots in a stone with my metal nail.

Regretful that I could not take my project materials with me, I left them in the field as the sun began to rise. I was at my very weakest and I felt quite fatigued from such labor. I would go have a leisurely snooze in the structurally unsafe area of the castle, where I knew I wouldn’t be bothered, and continue on with my noble quest at a later hour.
