The Gorgon's Daughter

#1

Andy walked through the forest, fear and excitement warring equally in his heart. For years, boredom with his pathetic village had weighed on him. At last, he was going to do something different, something new!

Andy was a prime example of what, many years later, would be called an ugly duckling. He had been pudgy and ungainly in his youth, and all the other children had harassed him mercilessly. His short temper hadn’t helped the situation.

When, upon reaching adulthood, he had abruptly transformed into an incredibly handsome man, his peers had suddenly changed their tune. As though seeing him with new eyes, they had finally recognized his ingenuity and good humor. Women and girls fawned over him.

But their newfound praises fell on deaf ears. Andy had a long memory, and had seen the true selves of each of them. While cordial, none of their romantic overtures were returned.

Andy had been restless his entire existence. He’d felt constrained by his surroundings, that he had some sort of greater calling. He wasn’t sure just yet what it was. With each passing year, he had taken on tasks still yet more daunting (and invigorating) than the last. Though he loved his parents, he was seeking a new life.

That was how he found himself on the poorly kept path that wound through the forest on its way up the hillside. He had volunteered to be the one to leave the weekly offering for the beast in the caves. The deadly Gorgon.

Andy had a plan. Unlike the many, foolish folk, who had lost their lives to the creature, he was not coming for her head. No, far from it. He intended to get a good look and live to tell about it. He’d heard the parts of her that were not monstrous were the fairest anyone could imagine, and he was curious.

He’d done his research, read the ancient stories. And though no one was left alive in the village who had done it, he knew others had survived, and why. All he had to do was avoid looking the Gorgon in the eye.

He had first become so inquisitive when he had learned that the deadly Gorgon had the most beautiful face of any maiden living. That she would be so comely, and yet possessed of such other, hideous features, fascinated him. He wondered what her heart was like: good, or evil?

Of course, Andy had a plan; he wasn’t an idiot. In his research, Andy had read that the Gorgon’s sister, Medusa, could be viewed safely in a reflection. And so, he had brought a burnished shield to serve the function. Perhaps even, if necessary, to provide protection if he was discovered and had to flee.

But he certainly did not intend to be seen. He would merely watch, hidden, as the Gorgon came to collect her tribute.

Perhaps what Andy imagines?
