The Gorgon's Daughter

#16

Andy’s POV

I quickened my step as I drew closer to (Y/N)’s clearing. My heart started to race in my chest, even though only five days had passed since I’d visited her last. There was nothing for it; the knowledge that I would soon see (Y/N) again lifted my spirits like nothing else ever had.

Not for the first time, I questioned whether it was too presumptuous to have brought a spare tunic with me. It just seemed as though covering (Y/N)’s bosom during our journey was a good idea. Granted, she was possessed of several unusual attributes that we’d need to keep hidden from others. But from greater distance, say, in the grass, her bared breasts were sure to draw unwanted attention, should we come across anyone during our travel to the temple. I knew I found they unfailingly drew my eye…

I blushed as I entered the dell where (Y/N)’s dais stood, raising my shield to hide my face as much to protect me from any mistakes I might make with my gaze. Damica came loping out to greet me, and I gave her a quick pat before placing the tunic on the platform and then positioning myself in front of the stone slabs, shield at the ready.

I wasn’t there long before I heard a familiar, welcome voice, “Andy! How good it is to see you again!”

Excitement at hearing her, at her very words, raced through my veins, and I felt vaguely as though I were flying through the sky. “As it is to hear your voice once more!”

I had to stifle the urge to turn around, to go to (Y/N). It was difficult to sit still, but I was relieved when I saw her bright, curious eyes and smiling countenance reflected in my shield. She was assessing the chemise I had brought. “But what is this?”

Immediately I felt my face heat up with embarrassment. “I brought it for you, for our journey. I thought it would help to cover, I mean, it would… should anyone happen to-“

(Y/N) held it up for inspection. “-This is a shirt? Clothing, as humans wear? I told you I am not cold.”

I struggled with my words. “Uh, humans, they wear clothes also for modesty, to cover certain parts of the body. It is my fear that-“

(Y/N)’s response made me gulp in mortification. “-I remember your enjoyment of my form, though I did not know it was rooted in my chest. Others often have had that same reaction. I take it you hope to prevent others from becoming enamored of my breasts, as you are?”

I could reply but weakly, my voice small, “Precisely. I, uh, felt it would be more convenient, er…” I trailed, off, wishing I could crawl away in shame.

She chuckled. “Your logic is reasonable, but for the fact that I have snakes upon my head, and a serpentine tail with which to crawl. I should have thought those would be more of a priority with regards to a disguise? Nevertheless, I suppose you are right. It is best to control every variable that we can. Hopefully, if I wear this shirt, you will better be able to concentrate as well.”

I cleared my throat, my entire face, neck, and chest now hot with humiliation. “An absolutely valid point. Heh.”

And so it was that (Y/N) the Gorgon tried on human clothes, not for the first time, but for the first time given as a gift. Afterwards, (Y/N) showed him the sack she had woven together for her head. They laughed together, calling it ‘the head basket.’ The vipers and colubrids on (Y/N)’s head were not terribly pleased, but found it light enough to settle after a bit of adjustment.

Andy told (Y/N) of his trip, what he had learned from the seer. It was decided that they would leave the following morning for the temple of Lugh the Many Skilled, that they would travel just off the road to keep (Y/N) safe from others and others safe from (Y/N). She had Damica lead Andy through her caves again, to find monies to pay for supplies and offerings.

Andy left in high spirits, feeling optimistic. Lugh the Many Skilled was a very powerful god. He was a druid, carpenter, poet, and mason. He had powers of healing and rebirth and was a god of the sun itself. His talents were legendary and without end. Surely, if anyone could help them in their quest, it would be he.

After Andy had left, (Y/N) set about packing a small bag of her own, filling it with tribute that she felt might be worthy of a modern god. A delicate, well-made chalice, fine jewelry, a small, metal, sculpted crow.

As she looked down at the small collection, she realized something dangerous had occurred. The hope in her breast, the hope for a new life, had grown from a flicker to a bright, searing light, obscuring all else. Worried, she left the rucksack to meditate. Being entirely consumed by dreams she recognized were, despite their hopes, unlikely to come to fruition, could only bring dissatisfaction and unhappiness. It was the thought of Andy’s smile that calmed her once again.
