The Gorgon's Daughter

#12

Athena walked past the Courthouse in central Mount Olympus on the way to her rather modest home at the outskirts. She looked at it wistfully, remembering when she had epitomized justice and good judgment in the eyes of her people. Had she not played the primary role in directly establishing the idea of the trial by one’s peers? How things had changed since then…

She hated that monotheism was coming into prominence. Those who did remember the old, Grecian gods thought of them as bedtime stories. And so often, the stories were warped from the original, practically beyond recognition.

At last, after her long trek to the market, Athena reached her hut. Downgraded many times, she was, secretly, just grateful she still had somewhere to stay. True belief in her was almost nonexistent at present, and it didn’t afford her luxurious living quarters.

She thought enviously on the few of the ancient gods that still had some manner of respect. Aphrodite, for one. Poseidon, for another. Not that still being able to sink or salvage a ship was something to lose one’s head over, but still… it was something.

For so long, they had all done so well! They had even changed with the times. To the Romans, she had been known as Minerva, Hermes as Mercury, Artemis as Diana… Apollo had even managed to keep his name! What had happened to them all? What had they done to deserve such a fall?

Elsewhere, Aphrodite was positively glowing. Someone had actually muttered a prayer to her! She resolved to investigate the situation further and see if she could do anything. Maybe things were on the up and up?

Zeus, on the other hand, was having his hair cut by his wife, Hera, to save money. She had expensive tastes, and so all the belief they shared often went quickly. There was none to spare for something like a trip to the barber.

He envied his brother, Hades. Somehow, out of all of this, he had ended up holding on the to the most faith of all their lot. It seemed humans’ fear of death was persistent throughout the ages. They would consider anything that they thought might stave off the hand of Atropos, the last of the three Moirai, and spare their thread from being cut. Or were the three sisters called Norns now? He had trouble keeping track of all the changes…
