A Demon's Bargain

#73

I looked at Andy, pursing my lips together to try and be strong. I needed to show as little of my sadness as possible. I didn’t want to depress him, leave him with a negative image of me.

Andy returned my gaze wordlessly from where he sat on the floor, by Ashley’s feet. He opened his mouth to speak, when Satan interrupted him. “Ash and I will just, err, go into another room, give you two a moment.” Satan gestured to the dark-haired demon with the olive skin, and he rose to follow him immediately.

“There’s a television in the guest room. It’s down the hall and to your left,” I offered up, lamely.

Andy moved along the floor to kneel at my feet, taking both of my hands in his larger ones. “I beg you to wait for me, my darling peach. I don’t know how long I will be gone, but my heart is as surely in your hands as though I had torn it out from my breast and set it in your grip. You are, in all truthfulness, my penultimate ruler, the sovereign queen of my existence. Please, I am lost without you.” He lifted my hands to his lips so that he could place delicate, little kisses along my knuckles, and I felt my heart melt.

I moved to hold his angular face in my hand. “Of course, silly! Now get on up here next to me!” I patted a good spot on the couch.

As Andy was situating himself next to me on the sofa (and, of course, adjusting his hair), I tried to push the sadness down, to not let it make it all the way to my eyes. Though I knew I had doubtless failed, I had to get out what I needed to tell him before he left. “Andy, I want you to know that I have no doubt, from the bottom of my heart, that I will wait for you; I’ll wait as long as it takes.”

Andy took my hands in his and I forced myself to go on, “I’m not afraid of this, I’m not afraid of being apart, because we will have all the time in the world left with each other once we’ve made it through this. I’m just,” I sniffled, “I’m just afraid of the pain of your absence. I’m going to be so lonely…”

I had wanted to say more, but the lump in my throat was swiftly growing larger, and, “I love you,” was all I could get out before I started to tear up and my voice broke, despite my efforts.

Andy drew me to him, wrapping his long arms around me. As we held each other tightly, I was surprised to hear his voice coming out shakily as well. “As I love you.”

We held each other for a long time, but it didn’t feel like long enough. I didn’t want to let go; I didn’t want Andy to go. I felt the tears freely running down my face, and I heard Andy’s breath hitch. “I shall know no true peace until I am in your arms again, beloved.” I squeezed him even tighter before forcing myself to pull away.

I wiped fruitlessly at my face, embarrassed. “Come on, let’s get whatever you need.”

Andy produced a little list from his pocket, and I recognized it was written in fountain pen ink. “I prepared in advance, lest I became overly emotional.” He gave me a small smile, clearly proud of himself.

I looked at the list, and was surprised at how short it was: gift bag from (Y/N), pen, cookies, rose. “I’ll gather the things together from your bag, if you want to work on the rest.”

As I gathered together Andy’s cigarettes, nutella, peanut butter, and the remaining candy and Monsters, I couldn’t help but wonder how he was going to transport all the cookies I had made for him. There were dozens!

I turned around to ask, only just in time to watch the whole stack of containers vanish! Andy grinned mischievously from the kitchen. “I sent them ahead. Now they are safe in my pantry.”

He carefully put his pen away in the box it had originally come in, and then took the gift bag from me. Adding the boxed pen to the gift bag, that, too, vanished! “And that is in my study,” Andy looked satisfied. “But that I could whisk you away with me!”

I felt my eyes starting to water again, “Did you want your toothbrush?”

Andy shook his head. “It would surely die of loneliness, if parted from yours. Let it remain here, that some vestige of me might remain in your company.” He swallowed and ran a hand through his hair, his tail limp. “I shall miss you at every moment, mistress.”

I moved to hug him one last time. “I will wait for you, however long it takes.” He bent to kiss me, and a tear from his cheek flowed onto mine as our lips met. It was a bittersweet moment and I crushed my eyes shut that it might never end. I opened them as he pulled away, pain and sorrow etched on his face.

I watched him put his hand around the vase of the rose, lift it to hold it close, and abruptly I realized this was it. The tears started streaming as I fought to control myself. “I love you,” I snuffled.

Andy clenched his jaw before responding. “And I love you. I will despair for every moment we are apart.” He raised my hand to his lips, and I just had time to feel the brush of his kiss before he, too, disappeared.

Andy was gone; he was really gone! I dropped, distraught, to the floor, and started sobbing.

Aww- glad you enjoyed! I generally never write chapters that long, but it didn't feel right to just randomly cut it in half (or thirds, heh).

@Merelan

Oh dear- did you want it to? D:

The main plot has 2 chapters to go (I think) but there’s a semi-lengthy epilogue that may not seem very necessary right now, but that will make a lot more sense after the prequel has been published.
