A Demon's Bargain

#63

When Andy was a young child, he’d had quite a temper when he felt things weren’t going the way he wanted them to. By the time he was only four or five, he’d started having disastrous, pyrotechnic tantrums that were almost beyond even my ability to control.

What had salvaged the situation was something his mother, Amy, had noticed. Right before Andy let his rage loose and showered the house in a fiery catastrophe, there’d be the briefest instant of calm as he instinctively gathered his energy. During those times, if you were paying attention, you could smell burning brimstone.

I had almost forgotten what those moments had been like, it had been so many centuries. Almost.

As soon as Ashley’s name left my lips, Andy froze. His pupils constricted to slits, and I caught the whiff of brimstone. Reacting on ancient, parental instinct alone, I shot my hand out and immobilized him.

I had almost been too late! I blinked, and in the time it had taken me to gesture, burning whorls of liquid fire were shooting from his mouth, nose, ears, tear ducts, even out of his fucking pants! He was grimacing horribly as the fire went out the moment I willed it. But I was too slow for the damned fire alarm and sofa. Shit!

I shook my hand at Andy, irritated. “I’ll be right back, don’t struggle!”

I found the fire alarm, but I gave up trying to press the fucking button after three times and no end to its piercing shriek! Angry, I wrenched it towards me, only to find wires that I’d broken had connected it to something in the wall! Dammit!

At least it’d stopped going off.

I sat there, poking at it and fussing, for a minute or two before sighing and giving up. I didn’t want Andy’s woman to get in trouble…

Resorting to a ridiculously powerful incantation over a fucking fire alarm, I hovered it back into place, reconnected the wires, and fixed the machinery inside. Cautiously, I waited, listening to see if it started up again. Well, so far, so good.

Irate, I went and sat back down in my thankfully untouched seat. I gruffly shoved Andy up several inches so I could knit the sofa back together, ignoring the evil eye he gave me for keeping him motionless in his ruined clothes. It was taking a while, so I gave him a warning look. “Are you fucking well done?”

Naturally, he couldn’t move or speak, but the question had been rhetorical anyway. “Andrew, Ashley is your brother! He’s capable of being very professional!”

Andy started violently struggling against the hold I had on him. Seeing the couch was finished repairing itself, I just released him and let him drop into it.

He didn’t miss a beat. “Ashley is the oldest of my kind, the most clever; he’s just going to-“

My temper sparked, and I silenced him again, though his tail and fists still balled angrily. “-Andrew! You just tried to destroy (Y/N)’s house! Who knows what that would have done to your contract, the agreement I made with your grandfather! Calm down before you do something stupid. There are no alternatives here.” I met his angry gaze for a moment before releasing him again.

Andy was still for a moment, his jaw working like an excited hip-hop dancer, before he totally took me off guard. He looked away and teared up! What the heck? “This is to test (Y/N)’s love for me, is it not? Who is to say she will not forget me, will not find Ashley’s company more convenient and enjoyable than mine? What if I go through all that torture of begging forgiveness, of facing Lola, for nothing?”

I sighed heavily and shook my head. That was a tough one. Love was still pretty new to me, too, relatively speaking. And it was nothing if not complicated. “Love is about trust and faith. I’m willing to guess it’s part of Dennis’ assessment of you, too. To see if you’ll go through with it, even with temptation knocking on (Y/N)’s door-“

Andy shouted brokenly, “-If he touches her ‘door,’ I will kill him!”

I raised my hands up in a placatory fashion and made an even greater attempt to watch my words. “Andy, he won’t if she loves you and she tells him no. You know Ashley, that he wouldn’t ever pursue someone without consent. If he does, I’ll kill him before you even get a chance, ok?” The weird things you’ll do to comfort your children…

Andy sniffled miserably. “I want to cast away this curse, this love, look at what it has caused! This is all horrible!”

I rolled my eyes, as Andy couldn’t see me, he was busy contemplating the floor. “If it were all horrible, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, would we? Do you really want me to take your memories away again? Even your memories of (Y/N)?”

“No…” Andy sniffled sadly. I would have gone to hug him, but I had no idea if he’d take it the right way. Besides, he was still mostly naked after his outburst.

I thought quickly. Dennis and I hadn’t really gone over the details of how the whole shebang would start, but I figured it was likely I’d need to get in touch beforehand, so that Andy didn’t accidentally break the contract and starve.

I formed a plan of action on the fly. “Look… I’ll go talk to Ashley, ok? Make sure he knows what’s going on; I already sent him a text telling him not to start any new contracts. I’ll also touch base with your grandfather. It’ll give you a few days to talk to (Y/N). Just call or text whenever you two are ready.”

Andy sighed melodramatically. “And what if she refuses? Or does not believe me?”

I stood, ready to leave, and Andy stood as well. I patted him on the shoulder. “That’s part of what love is. Taking chances and all that shit. I know, it sucks.” I paused as Andy scowled. “It’s good to see you, though, with your memories back. Your mom will be thrilled.”

That got me a small, toothy smile. “Atta boy! Give your dad a hug!” Without giving him a chance to protest, I embraced him again. It was good to have my son back, fully, once again.

@Merelan

Aww- glad you enjoyed! I generally never write chapters that long, but it didn't feel right to just randomly cut it in half (or thirds, heh).

@Merelan

Oh dear- did you want it to? D:

The main plot has 2 chapters to go (I think) but there’s a semi-lengthy epilogue that may not seem very necessary right now, but that will make a lot more sense after the prequel has been published.
