“If you could be any type of animal, what animal would you be?”

I glared up to the ceiling as I contemplated my answer. “Let’s see-” I rubbed my chin, acting as if I was thinking real hard about the question. “If I could be any type of animal then I would chose to be a turtle.” Andy immediately started laughing at my answer. “What’s so funny?” I asked, laughing along myself. He took a deep drag from his cigarette, allowing the smoke to filtrate through his legs, before answering my question. “I’ve never heard anyone wanting to be a turtle.” I just shrugged my shoulders. “Out of all the animals in the world, why on Earth would you want to be a turtle?” I began to open my mouth to tell him my exact reason as to why I would want to be a turtle but my lovely sister wrapped her arm around my neck, causing me to jerk back in shock. “Charlie-” She started to whine. “I’m ready to go home now.” I looked over at Andy apologetically as I tried my best to keep Kimberly standing up right. “Where’s the other girls at?” I asked her as I let her take the seat I was occupying. She just looked around aimlessly, her eyes finally landing on Andy. “How did you get in here?”

She slurred as she pointed her finger in his face. “This is a private club.” I watched as Andy rolled his eyes, lighting another cigarette before getting up himself. “Can someone get this trash out of my sight, please!” Kimberly’s voice got louder as I tried to place my hand over her mouth. I’ve heard Kim say some nasty stuff when she’s drunk but this was utterly embarrassing. “Bartender, I need another drink!”

I watched as Andy began to walk away and I didn’t want him to think that I shared my sister’s views. I propped my sister against the counter, making sure she wouldn’t fall, and trailed after the mystery guy. He was a head of me by a couple feet but that didn’t stop me from pushing through the crowd. “Andy!” I yelled but not loud enough. “Andy!” I tried again but he was either ignoring me or didn’t hear me over the music. I finally reached the entrance and saw that he was nowhere to be found. I couldn’t help but let out a frustrated groan as I racked my fingers through my hair. This was the first guy that i’ve actually enjoyed spending a short amount of time with, but my stupid, drunk sister had to ruin everything. I’ve never met a guy who I could talk to so easily. It was like our conversations just flowed and we never struggled with choosing a topic during the short time we were together. It was as if I had known him for years but in reality it had only been 45 minutes.

I slowly made my way back into the club and saw my sister was passed out on top of the bar top. I had no idea how she got up there but I could see that the bartender was none too happy about it. “Sorry.” I quickly apologized as I tried my best to lift out my dead weight of a sister. I couldn’t help but mutter a few curse words as I finally pulled her off the bar and tried my best to carry her through the club and the people around us. “Where are we going?” She slurred as she looked around. I just ignored her, trying my best to get out the door before I collapsed. I don’t know if it was all the alcohol she had drank tonight but she weighed as if she was the size of an adult horse. “Charlie, where are we going?” She asked again. We had finally reached the outside and at that point I was just ready to drop her onto the sidewalk and let the bums take care of her. “Charlie are you mad at me?” I could hear the sadness in her voice, making me feel guilty about ignoring her questions. This was exactly why I hated going out with Kimberly and her friends. Every time we would go out, Kim’s friends would ditch her and I would be the one who had to pick up the drunken pieces. I have no idea why she would get totally wasted every weekend when she knew that she had to get up early and pick Matilda up from our mother’s. I would always ask her why she felt the need to party and her response would borderline the excuse that she was still young and beautiful to do so. She was so vain but being vain doesn’t keep the awful hangover away the next morning.

By the time that I got Kimberly settled in and her head out of the toilet, I finally managed to get a few hours asleep before I had to be back at the shop. I had a busy week lined up seeing as the holidays were approaching and everyone wanted some type of desert for their upcoming parties and gatherings. I didn’t have time to deal with Kimberly’s hangover or the fact that I had to go pick my niece up from my mother’s house. It’s not that I minded picking up Matilda but if her mother was actually reliable, I wouldn’t be going to my mother’s house right now. I already knew that she was going to say something as soon as I walk in. Whether it be about a new man that she’s found to set me up with or the fact that i’m dressed in a double denim outfit; either way she was going to have something to say. As I drove the half an hour drive to her home, I couldn’t help but start thinking about Andy. I barely knew the guy but there was something about him that just had me wanting more. He wasn’t the typical guy that I get set up with or even dated. Andy was the type of guy my mother would have a heart attack over if I was to bring him to a family get together. The thing is, I barely knew the guy and his whole wholesome persona could just be a fluke. I’ve met plenty of guys that seemed great at first but by the second or third date that Mr. Nice guy act went flying out the window.

They ended up being complete and total assholes and all they wanted out of the relationship was sex. I am not one to hook up with someone just because they called me beautiful or had flowers delivered to my house. I wanted someone that would be willing to take the time and effort to make the relationship work before jumping right into sex. Don’t get me wrong, sex is a great thing, but it’s not that great when you don’t have a connection with your partner. I wanted a connection that would last a lifetime but in this day and age that was a bit of a far-cry. I’ve watched my mother go through three marriages and two sessions of divorce court, along with my sister ending up married and divorced as well. I did not come from a stable marriage background. Everyone I knew growing up were on their second, third, and even sixth marriage; yes, I said six! No one was able to keep the home fires burning strong enough to stay with the first person that had met.

I placed my car into park and quickly removed myself from the driver’s side. I rushed to the front door, not bothering to knock since my mother probably wouldn’t have heard the bell anyway. “Hello?” I announced as I made my way into the sitting room. “Mother? I looked around and saw that Matilda’s Barbies were scattered all over the place, some having clothes on and others baring it all. “Mother?” I decided to yell out again as I rounded the corner that lead to the kitchen. The sight that I came to meet was one that i’ve never seen in all the years that i’ve been alive. The kitchen, where my mother hardly ever spent time in, was in absolute shambles. Flour, eggs, and other ingredients littered the entire space, resembling an explosion of some sorts. In the middle of all the mess and chaos was my niece, covered in flour and other things herself. My mother was nowhere to be found but that wasn’t really uncommon. “Matilda Grace, what on earth have you done?” I asked as I kneeled down to her level. I had no idea if my mother had a clue about this but by the looks of the place I highly doubt it. “I wanted to play cake shop like you do.” She replied nervously. I watched as she twisted her little fingers and looked to the ground as she spoke. “I wanted to be like you.” A little glimmer of happiness flowed through me when I heard her say that. She wanted to be like me; she wanted to be like her Auntie Charlie. In the back of my mind I knew that it was still too early for her to know what she really wanted out of life but if she wanted to be a business owner or something other than a housewife, I was going to support her 100 percent of the way. She didn’t deserve to be treated the way her mother had been and I know seeing her parent’s fight at such a young age was a bit traumatizing. “Am I in trouble, Auntie Charlie?” I just shook my head and wrapped my arms tighter around her body. “No, sweetheart you’re not in trouble.” I felt her relax a bit. “How about you come to work with me today and help me with the orders, does that sound good?” I asked with a smile as I pulled away. She replied with the biggest smile i’ve ever seen, meaning that she was more than into the idea. “Okay, but before we leave you need to change your clothes and I need to clean up this mess before Nana finds out.”

Having a tiny little helper wasn’t that bad of a thing.

She helped me get the ingredients and then pour them in when needed. She even got to stir and apply icing to some of the cakes and cookies. I think the biggest perk of helping me was that she got to try out every single item of food that came out of the oven. She was my little tester, and the girl was not afraid to let you know when something wasn’t up to par. The sugar rush that happened after she ate all those cookies was not something that I enjoyed. She was practically bouncing off the walls and there was no way to control her. I even offered her another cookie if she would calm down but she refused it. It took a little over two hours for her to finally calm down and pass out in the back office. Well, she more or less passed out on the showroom floor but I carried her the rest of the way to my office. I would finally be able to get the rest of my work done, at least I hope.

I walked back out into the showroom, over to where my cake was waiting, and started to apply the fondant pieces. Fondant was a particularly hard substance to work with when it began to harden, it was even difficult to work with when it was fresh. I had told the lady who ordered the cake that I would have it done by the end of tomorrow but I didn’t calculate the time it took to clean my mom’s kitchen or the fact that I had to babysit my niece. I still had quite a few things to add and bake for the cake, so my only way of getting it done would be pulling an all-nighter. The only thing that I needed to make sure that happens was to call Kimberly and have her pick Matilda up so she wouldn’t have to spend the rest of the day or night at a bakery. I knew that she was going to be a terror when she finally decided to wake up and I don’t think I could handle a five year old tantrum at the moment. I picked up my phone and pressed Kim’s name, the other line ringing immediately.

“Lo?” She slurred after five rings. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at her childish behavior. It was nearing one in the afternoon and she was still sleeping. “Kimberly, I need you to come and pick up Matilda.” I told her forwardly. “I have a cake that needs to be ready by tomorrow morning and I still have so much to do for it.” I could hear her let out a groan as I guess she was trying to move from the bed. “Can’t mom pick her up?” She spoke again. “Call mom and tell her to come and pick her up.” Typical Kimberly. She could never do anything that didn’t benefit her in some way. I let out a frustrated sigh, “Kimberley, it’s one in the afternoon and you need to come pick up your child.” She let out a few more groans before muttering the word fine. “Thank you.” I told her a bit too harshly before ending the call. I knew that it would take Kim about two and a half hours to actually arrive, so I figured I would just let Matilda sleep off the sugar and have her be grouchy for the ride home. I set my phone back on the counter and walked over to the cake, finally starting to get some work done on it. At one point, my focus was centered so much on the cake that I lost track of time. I didn’t even bother to look up when I heard the bell above the door ring, figuring that it was my fashionably late sister. “Kim, I called you hours ago.”

“Sorry, I must’ve not heard the phone ring.” A male voice answered back, causing my hand to stop what it was doing and my head slowly rising up. “I guess i’ll have to put the ringer on next time.” Standing less than 4 feet away from me was the one thing that I had been worrying about for the past morning. “My friend told me that this was the best place to get a Mint Chocolate cupcake, I was just wondering if that was true or not.” I stayed stone silent as he just smiled and acted as he had the night before. I didn’t know if I was dreaming or not at this point. I know that sounds so cliche and everything but I honestly thought I would never see this guy ever again. “Did I come at a bad time?” His face dropped as he looked around the empty shop. I followed his gaze, realizing that I was acting like a total spazz. “No, no you came at a perfect time.” I stuttered out. Why was I being so awkward? I spoke to him last night as if I was speaking to a friend and now I can’t even get a proper sentence out. “Wo-would you like a cup-cupcake or something?” Really, Charlotte! He just smiled as he took a seat at the bar, crossing his tattooed arms on the bar top. “What kind you got?”

It took me a second to comprehend what he had just said but then I sprint into action, rambling off the different kinds that were available today. “The most popular kind is the Cherry Cheesecake but I would highly recommend the Pumpkin Pie cupcake.” He looked at the selections before pointing his finger towards the tan pastry. “I’m gonna take your word and have the Pumpkin Pie.” I gave him a smile before reaching into the case and pulling the heavenly treat out. “It’ll probably be the best cupcake you’ve ever had in your life, not to toot my own horn or anything.” I shrugged my shoulders as he took a bite. I could feel my chest beating in my chest as he chewed, staying silent during the time. “So?” I decided to ask. “How do you like it?” He stayed silent a few more seconds before giving me two thumbs up. “It’s delicious!” He told me with his mouth still full. My smile grew in large at hearing the news. I’ve had many people tell me that the Pumpkin and Caramel Pie Cupcake was their favorite but hearing Andy say it meant so much more. I only hope that he was telling me the truth and not just lying to me so I don’t get my feelings hurt. “Do you think I can try another one?” He asked once the first one was gone. I quickly reached into the case and gave him a second one, watching as he devoured the cupcake once again.

“What made you want to open a bakery in the first place?” He asked once the cupcake obsession settled. He managed to eat three pumpkins and then two more Cake Batter No-bakes. “I’ve always had a love for making cookies and cakes, so I guess it’s always been a lifelong dream of mine.” He just nodded his head. “What do you do for a living?” I asked next. I knew that he probably didn’t have a practical job since his arms and neck were covered with tattoos. “So you have no idea who I am?” He asked with a laugh. My heart started to beat as I tried to think if I had seen him before. Was he offended that I never heard of him? “I’m sorry, I don’t.” I told him meekly as he continued to smile. I watched as he pulled out his phone and started scrolling through something, finally finding what he was looking for moments later. He pushed his phone out towards me, a picture of a group of guys displayed in front of me. “Black Veil Brides, my band.” I looked up at him before taking the phone and looking closely at the picture. The five guys that were staring back at me were covered in some type of black paint, with makeup covering their faces. “I didn’t expect you to know who I was but sometimes girls like to play coy and act like they don’t know.” He told me with a shrug of his shoulder. I handed the phone back to him, “What kind of music do you all play?” I must have looked like a complete and total idiot. “I like to call it rock music but i’m sure other people would love to disagree.” I stayed silent as I tried to decipher what they might sound like. By the way they were dressed in the photo, they were probably the type of band to scream and yell, not that i’m judging or anything.

“Have you always wanted to be a musician or was it just something you decided to do one day?” Wow, that was a stupid question. Who just wakes up one day and decides that they’re going to be a musician? “I used to watch people like Motley Crue and dream of getting to the point they were at. I didn’t finish school, so my only option was to live out my dream or do nothing with my life.” He told me truthfully. “I never wanted to be a musician for the money, even though the money is nice. I wanted to be in a band because I watched my idols touch people’s lives and I wanted to do the same thing.” I could tell he really enjoyed what he did just by the way he spoke. Some musicians only wanted the money that the trade brought about but it was rare to see someone these days wanting to do it because of the fans. “I think that’s great, Andy.” I told him with a smile. He just returned the smile before the room became silent, a good kind of silent.

I was about to ask him another question but the sound of little feet starting coming towards us, Matilda appearing seconds later. “Auntie Charlie, I don’t feel good.” She ignored the fact that there was someone sitting in the chairs in front of me and lifted her arms up for me to pick her up. I followed her directions and set her on my hip, causing her head to slump on to my shoulder. I quickly went into aunt mode, making sure she didn’t have a fever or anything. I came to the conclusion that she had way too much treats and her stomach was now paying the price. “Why don’t I feel good, Auntie Charlie?” She asked again, her eyes also landing on Andy. He gave her a warm smile and wave as she gave him a small wave back. “You’ve eaten too many sweets, that’s why.” She just shook her head, denying the fact that she may have taken the test-eating a bit too far. At that exact moment, her mother decided to show up, looking as if she was going to the country club for brunch. “I know, I know!” She exclaimed as she closed the door behind her, slipping her sunglasses into her hair as she turned to face everyone. “Where is my ba-” She stopped talking when she saw Andy sitting there just like she had done last night. “Geez Charlie, I didn’t realize you let just anyone into your shop.”

Here we go again. “Listen, this is a high end bakery. If you don’t have the money to buy anything, I advise you to leave before I call the cops.” She told him obnoxiously. I couldn’t just stand her and let her talk to this poor guy like that. I set my niece of the countertop and stomped around to the showroom floor, standing toe-to-toe with my older sister. “Kimberly, you have no right talking to my customers like that!” I raised my voice. “When you decide to open your own bakery, you can talk to your customers any way you want but you will not speak to mine in such a manner.” She looked a little taken back as I told her my thoughts. It’s not like we never fought because we were always fighting. I just didn’t like that she had the nerve to come into my business and speak to a customer with such disgust.

“I’m just trying to look out for you, Charlotte.” She whined as she looked Andy up and down. “Wait a minute-” She pushed me out of the way and approached his chair. “You’re the guy from the club last night!” She once again pointed her finger in his direction. “You were talking to my sister last night and now you show up to her bakery, stalker much!” She yelled at him as he just rolled his eyes. “That’s it!” I yelled back as I grabbed her roughly by the arm and started leading her back to the door. She protested during the altercation but finally closed her mouth once I placed her outside the shop. “What the hell is your problem, Kim?” She tore her arm out of my grip, giving me a hateful look. “He is a customer and if he wants to sit there and eat cupcakes or anything else, he is more than welcomed to do do. Just because he’s covered in tattoos and piercings does not make him any less of a person.” I knew what I was saying wasn’t sinking into her brain but it made me feel better. Andy didn’t do anything to deserve the treatment Kimberly had given him last night or today. He was a paying customer last night and he was a paying customer today.

“Do you like this guy?” She whispered with disgust. That was the first thing she had to say to me after I yelled at her. “Have you gone mental, Charlotte?” I rolled my eyes and pushed away from her, retreating back into the shop. How could she think that I liked the guy? I barely knew him and what I did know of him was not enough for me to like him. Was it wrong for me to be nice and cordial towards a person I just met, who also just happens to be the nicest guy i’ve met in a really long time? “Matilda, sweetheart it’s time to go home.” I told her once I was across the threshold. She looked up from Andy’s arms and stuck her bottom lip out. “Auntie Charlie, I want to stay with you.” She pleaded. I just shook my head and walked behind the counter to pick her up. “No, you have to go home so mommy can fix you supper and get you ready for bed.” Kimberly was never the type to fix Matilda dinner, or any meals for that matter. She also never read to the child, that was the duty of whoever was working that night. “Will you come see me tomorrow?” She asked as she wrapped her little arms around my neck. I gave her a kiss on the forehead and promised her that I would pay her a visit. She would probably be at either my mother and father’s house anyway. “I love you to Jupiter, Auntie Charlie.”

“And I love you to Saturn, Matilda.” I whispered in her ear. I gave her one last kiss before helping her with her little backpack and walking her out to her mother. Kimberly simply took her hand and went on her way, not bothering to say goodbye. While everything was going on, I had forgotten about Andy. I’m sure seeing two sisters fighting and having a four year old scoping out his tattoos was a bit strange for him. I made my way back into the shop and saw that he was still seated in the same place that he had been for the past 30 minutes. “I am so sorry about all that. My sister is a bit of a drama queen when it comes to people who don’t look and act like her, not saying that you don’t look like her but you don’t. I’m not saying you look strange or anything but you aren’t usually the type of person that comes into my bakery. Oh my gosh, that was so rude of me. I am so so sorry!” I couldn’t stop rambling at this point.

The more I rambled, the deeper the hole I was placing myself was getting. “I promise you look completely normal and I am not judging you because you’re in a band or that you wear makeup when you’re performing or that you’re music is probably something I wouldn’t listen too-” He slowly got up and like a dream that all girls have, he placed his lips onto mine, ending the constant babbling I was placing on him. His lips were about as soft as I thought they would be, and so incredibly gentle. I’ve been kissed goodnight by a couple people but this was by far the best kiss i’ve ever had. Even if it was just a kiss to get me to shut up, I enjoyed the act more than I should have. I was never one to kiss on the first date, especially to kiss someone who I wasn’t dating and who I had met in a club last night.

Andy was the first to move away after leaving me wanting so much more. “Do you wanna get some dinner or something?” He asked once we pulled apart. All I could do was nod my head like an idiot, forgetting all about the cake that I had to get done by tomorrow morning. “Okay, great!” He smiled as he pulled out his phone. “Does 8 sound good?” I only nodded my head, staying silent and smiling back. I could not believe this was happening right now! I had just kissed a guy I barely knew and now I was agreeing to go on a date with him….. “Eight it is.”
