Home Bound

Chp. 1, Fostered

In and out, in and out. In came a soul, out went another. In came a memory, out went another. In and out, in and out. Yet again, my mind was trying to wrap itself around this concept as I looked around Bellground’s Youth Center, a group home for kids that were pretty much unwanted. I’d been here since I was about nine and now I was seventeen, close to being too old to for anyone to care about. At this point I was lucky if an old couple was willing to foster me out for the next year till I could make it to college.

In and out, in and out. That’s all I saw here and all I’d done. I’d left many times before only to come back and frequently I wondered who else did the same. Very rarely did I see anyone come back. Maybe I was the problem. In and out, in and out-

“Miss Rose, can I speak to you?” Asked Miss Tammy. Miss Tammy was a woman in her mid-50s with a fading blonde bun piled on top of her head. She could be sweet as sugar one moment but sour as a lemon flavoured Warhead the next. But I guess it was good for us. Someone had to keep us unwanted together and well behaved so one day we’d be able to fit into normal society, the same society that said they didn’t want us. I got up and followed her into her office. Normally, she only called me in when couples came in to look at the younger kids and by chance either wanted me or needed a tour guide. Nobody had come in recently so I had no idea what she could possibly want.

“Miss Rose, please sit, love”, she urged, taking a seat by her own desk. I sat down, wondering what I could’ve possibly done to earn a special trip in here. Did I do something right? Did I do something wrong? What was it? “I have some really good news for you.”

So I did something good? All I could think was the other day, I’d helped clean up a little boy’s knee after he jumped off a swing and didn’t stick his landing. Colton was fostered not long after that.

“Miss Rose, somebody has shown some very special interest in you!” Miss Tammy sang. “A very lovely couple is considering having a child and the woman was unsure about it so they decided they’d like to foster you!”

I stared at her smiling round face. “So I get to be a test drive, huh?” I questioned. “So when they decide to have their kid, I can get dropped off here again?”

“Ferris, please”, Miss Tammy groaned. “I spoke to them on the phone and they’re truly wonderful people. Just give them a chance-”

“You say that about everyone! And then I just wind up back here! Like some kind of sock left behind in a laundry mat that keeps finding its way into people’s loads of laundry that they just bring back because ‘well that’s not my sock’.”

“Ferris, just try it. Please. They offered to let you spend the weekend at their home just to see how you like it. They’ll understand-”

“No they won’t!”

“You don’t even know them and you’re already judging them”, Miss Tammy snapped. “How did you find out macaroni was your comfort food?”

I glared under my bangs. “I tried it”, I muttered.

“Well maybe this family could be a new chapter in your life. Like macaroni, you won’t know until you try it.”

“Don’t expect me to be happy about this”, I growled, reaching for her door.

“They’ll be here soon.”

“Then I’ll see you on Monday.” I slammed the door after walking out of her office and headed for the room I shared with a girl named Michelle. She’d probably be gone soon since she was a star soccer player and what parent doesn’t want that? Michelle didn’t say anything to me as I smushed my clothes into a duffel bag and headed back downstairs. Silently, I waited for the couple on the concrete steps of the front porch. In and out, in and out.

A black car pulled up as the front passenger window rolled down. A dark haired woman was there, smiling at me. “Are you Ferris?” Asked the woman.

I forced a smile onto my face and nodded. “Yup. Are you the couple who wanted to see me?” I replied as pleasantly as I could.

“Of course”, the woman beamed. “Get in.” I did what she told me and climbed into the back seat. The driver I recognized as Andy Biersack, the singer of a band a friend of mine loved. The girl I couldn’t name. “I’m Juliet”, she said conveniently. “And this is Andy.”

“Hullo”, I murmured.

Neither of them said anything which was weird but they probably thought I was weird for not saying anything either. There wasn’t anything to say. I was just a passing soul to them as they were to me. We arrived at a grandiose house, not really a mansion, but most definitely swankier than most “average” homes. Juliet eagerly showed me the guest room which was a bit girly for my taste but whatever. Maybe she wanted a girl. “This is an overambitious question but what kind of gaming consoles do you have?” I asked.

Juliet tilted her head. “What?”

“Like, do you guys have an Xbox or a Play Station or something?” I inquired. “I’m a teenager. We like video games.”

“Not until you wash up for the dinner Daddy’s making!” she chirped.

I stared. “Daddy?”

“We’re your parents for the weekend! Call us Mommy and Daddy!”

“That’s kind of weird-”

“Do you want to be grounded?”

What the fuck? “No...Mommy”, I grunted. I tossed my duffel bag on the bed and
walked past the clearly insane woman to find a bathroom. There was one in the upstairs hallway so I washed my hands there and headed downstairs. “Daddy’s dinner” was Domino’s pizza, brought to us by a delivery guy who’d barely gotten to the house after we did.

“I figured first night here, let’s have pizza!” “Daddy” smiled. “Mommy” sent him a patronizing glare but I grabbed a box from him anyway and grabbed a slice that had banana peppers on it. Gross. I had a really bland palate that definitely excluded these things so I started picking them off.

“Ferris, you have to eat your greens-”

“Jules, she’s nearly an adult”, “Daddy”-fuck it- Andy stated. “Let her eat what she wants.” He received another glare. “So Ferris, what do you like to do?”

I shrugged and slurped on a string of loose cheese. “I dunno. Draw, I guess. Listen to music. Brood. Things most teenagers like.”

“What kind of music do you like?” Juliet asked, smiling.

Not what you make I thought. “You know, the classics. Led Zep, Tom Petty, KIX, that kind of stuff.”

“Do you like KISS?” Andy wondered.

“Or the Black Veil Brides?” Suggested Juliet.

I ripped a vicious bite out of my pizza and chewed. “Alice Cooper”, I said finally.

“What about her?” Juliet demanded.

“HE is my favourite artist”, I answered. “Shock rock god. I love me some Alice.”

Andy smiled. “Alice is a good pick”, he stated.

“I know I thought so.” Dinner was dumb. Just them asking me stupid questions in a lame attempt to get to know me. Juliet even had the audacity to send me to bed at eight o’clock sharp. Silently, I laid there, staring at the ceiling wondering what I could do to piss her off and make sure they didn’t want me or any other kid for that matter. A knock on my door sounded and I pretended to be asleep.

“You’re not kidding anyone”, scoffed Andy. “What’s up?”

“Just trying to sleep...Dad”, I muttered.

His eyebrows came together as his lips formed a slight sneer. “Really? She really did that?”

“Did what?”

“Told you to call us Mommy and Daddy? I told her not to fucking do that. Now you’re going to think we’re freaks!”

I sat up in bed, pulling my flannel over myself. “Yeah? Well, she’s kind of established herself as a freak.”

He sat down at the foot of my bed. “Maybe I can salvage you and me then. You call me Andy. She yells at you, you come to me about it, alright? I’m not your dad. We both know that.”

“At least one of you is normal”, I laughed. Andy laughed too and shook his head.

“Somebody has to be”, he murmured. “Anyway, she left. I don’t know what the Hell she’s doing but she won’t be back for a while. So I wanted to know if you wanted to do ACTUAL teenager things. I have some games on the Xbox if you want to play?”

I tried my best not to look excited. “Really?” I asked. “Like what?”

He shrugged. “Lots of shit. Jake and CC kind of leave stuff over all the time. I’m sure we can find something you’d like?”

I nodded and threw the covers back as Andy got up to head for the door. He brought me down to the living room where I browsed his game selection before picking up Resident Evil Revelations. “This”, I said firmly.

“Then play this”, he chuckled. I beamed, expertly turning on the Xbox and switching Skyrim with the other game. Andy let me make my own profile and everything before I played. We must’ve stayed up till three, playing the game, taking turns, googling solutions and tips while joking and laughing. Andy was a pretty cool dude, cooler than I gave his wannabe glam band credit for. Even if Juliet was a little touched, Andy seemed to make it worth while. For the next two days, I decided I’d enjoy the time I had with Andy and tell everyone I lived with a rockstar for a weekend.
