Andy

Lighthouse.

To put the stock of your faith in the hands of a rickity tower in dangerous business. Why I was doing it, I couldn’t quite pinpoint... But I couldn’t deny the level of wrecklessness I felt as I reached for the doorhandle hesitantly.

“It’s just a lighthouse.” I murmured to myself as encouraging as I could manage, before giving the iron handle a gentle tug. When that did nothing, I gradually applied more pressure, becoming more and more unsurprised by how stubborn the door appeared to be. It was centuries old, left over a decade without use, of course the door had swollen with moisture and age over the years, with no intentions of opening to anyone again.

I finally raised a foot, planting my sole firmly against the rough stone bricks surrounding the door, and kicked back from it, just trying to yank it open. Still, it refused to budge. Groaning a series of curse words under my breath, I put all my effort into pulling it, straining the muscles in my arms.

“Dammit!” I yelled in exasperation, jumping back from the door, raising my foot again, I slammed it against the center of the door. “Open, damm-”

The door easily creaked open, smoothly gliding inwards.

I scowled at the enterance for a few moment, fuming over it for no good reason. If Andy were here, he’d be laughing his ass off, and I’d probably be trying to kick him for it.

I stared into the darkness of the coridor, before fishing out my phone and turning on my flashlight, shining it around inside. To my surprise, the inside looked surprisingly well intact, featuring a museum of untouched relics, coated delicately in a layer of dust and mold.

Stepping into the main hall, I shined my light up the stone staircase into the ambient light above. There were long, narrow windows cut into the stone, each one barred and too small to wriggle through if one wanted to. The hallway curling upwards

I took a deep breath that did nothing to boost my confidence, and I slowly rested one foot on the bottom step.

“Am I really gonna do this?” I murmured to myself. Voicing the words instead of thinking them only made it sound much more stupid. Just an andrenaline trip to the top of the already teetering tower, to see what? The view? Heh, maybe I’ll get a few nice photos before I go toppling over the edge.

With that, I took my morbid sarcasm, and slowly began to ascend the stairs. The hallway was narrow and steep, and somehow the walls were still pressing in tighter as I neared the top.

I’m not a clausterphobic person, but being in a tiny tower destined for the lake left me feeling like I was in a chokehold.

Humming to myself to maintain a some-what calm composure, I looked through the slitted windows, catching glimpses of the teal water below, as well as the surrounding forest. There was something undeniably beautiful and forgotten about the lighthouse. The cracks in the plaster on the walls beared bushy patches of neon green moss speckled with small white flowers. I reached out to touch them, while listening to how the wind sounded when it blew through the windows. It’s gusts transformed through the slits into what sounded like hollow wails and low whispers. I craned my neck to look further up the staircase, I could see some thick flowering vines hanging down with large triangle shaped, peach colored blossoms. The interior was a living, breathing garden.

Birds flew away when I reached the second landing. I looked up to see a couple nests netted into the stonework above the small windows, where some small, annoyed looking baby robins glared at me. I carried on, turning to face the new staircase.

Each landing was filled with bright, warm daylight, while the staircases in between were damp and cold, and filled with cobwebs and darkness. I’d be satisfied just to hang out on one of the landings instead of climbing to the top, since they were just as beautiful as everything else I’d seen.

I admired the few every time I got to a new floor, because every time, things were just a little different. My stomach did nervous flops as I continued to climb towards the top.

I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard the low grumble of creaking metal, like heav metal slowly bending. I placed my hands against the rough stone hallways on either side of me, as though that were enough to keep the whole tower from taking a dive into the lake.

Some chips of plaster fell from above, and I held my breath, my pulse hammering enough to vibrate the building.

Well, shit...

That’s all it took that send me tiptoeing back down the various staircases to the bottom. When I got there, I planted my palms on my knees to catch my breath. Perhaps God might’ve protected me, but I’d rather not chance it, thanks.

I felt kinda bummed out for bailing half way through. I walked back out, looking up at the lighthouse, estimating in my head how much further I had to the top, counting down how many floors I’d reached in my head. Judging from the windows spiraling upwards, I was just two floors from the top. I shielded my eyes from the sun to get a good look at the metal railing running around the viewing deck at the top, and the broken glass of the light room.

I still feel determined to reach the top, though, perhaps not today. Though... I could take my invincibility bubble ghost friend with me next time, and reach the top without dying. I silently made plans for the future whilst starting up at the majestic tower, wishing my time here at the top of the mountain could have been a little longer. Cool gusts of wind were starting to come up, making being at the flat top of the rock pretty unpleasant. That may have been what was shifting the lighthouse, actually.

I walked back to the edge of the rock, looking at the churning turquoise waters below, and I turned to sit on a large rock, opening up my sketchbook. I doodled aimlessly, accompanied by the whistle of the breeze through the trees and over the uneven stone around me. It's an eery kind of peaceful here, though perhaps too quiet.

Looking up occaisionally, I could see the blue sky slowly being overtaken by the churning grey clouds. The made their way leisurely across the sky, rolling closer until they were almost overhead, and I couldn't risk staying any longer, not with the long, tedious hike I had ahead of me. Last thing I needed was to get caught in a thunderstorm, too.

Getting up and collecting my things, I took a moment to snap some cool pictures of the lighthouse with the storm clouds in the background. The scene before me almost looked like a desktop computer background, with the clouds brewing behind the tragically beautiful tower.

I take a short walk around the clearing, biding my time a little longer, snapping some more photos and taking in the view, before making the long, tedious trek back down to ground level.

Notes

It really shouldn't have taken me all week to update lol, I was caught in a pickle. One, being that I write this story primarily on a laptop. Well, while trying to download that damn Windows 10, it messed up my battery meter, so the battery will technically be full, but it will only show it as 30%, and if it drains beyond that, it dies. I tried to talk to Dell about it and their response was that it was either my fault it broke, or that it was my battery pack's fault. Well, after some research, it turns out this has happened a LOT to other people after updating to 10. Thusfar, I haven't found a useful fix for it, therefor, I cannot take my computer with me outside, to side in the overcast, inspiring weather to write. (first world problems, I know) So I had half a chapter written on my computer for when I'm indoors to write, and can be connected to the wall charger, and I had another chapter that was written to pick up right after this chapter, so I could write anywhere on my phone. Turns out, I enjoy writing on my phone a lot, because of how convienient it is, though not so good for editing, Nevertheless, I have two more chapters written after this one that will be uploaded over the next few days. I've been thinking about it, and this story is currently at 71 chapters, and I'm *maybe* 35% of the way through the plot, so maybe it'll end around 200-ish chapters? I dunno yet, but I do know this story will be around a good long while for those who've been enjoying it this long. :)

Here's a new song for the soundtrack, titled "I Will Fail You" by Demon Hunter. I imagine the song is from Andy's point of view.
