Chapter Two

Ashley's POV

That wolf.

That's all that was on my mind as I walked home, towel slung over my shoulder and slightly damp from drying out my hair after my morning swim.

What could such a delicate creature be doing in the woods? Not to mention that the woods were located behind a seemingly safe and quiet neighborhood. Surely someone would've noticed it was there, right?

So why was it just now showing up?

Something was definitely off with that wolf.

First thing I did when I got home was get my laptop and sit on the couch.

"Wolves... Red Pine Village.." I muttered aloud as I typed the keywords into the Google search bar, hitting the blue 'Search' button, and waited. When it loaded, I scrolled through the suggestions, looking and looking, but all I came up with was nothing.

Nothing.

No wolf sightings. Ever.

So what the hell was the wolf I saw this morning doing? How did it get there? There was no way it could've just waltzed out of it's natural habitat and wandered into the suburbs, not without being seen. That wolf was absolutely gorgeous, with its unique fur and eyes. Never in my life had I ever seen, let alone heard of, a wolf being that breathtaking.

That's when I remembered how confused it looked. Why did it seem confused? Had it never seen a human before?

"Oh, screw it." I mumbled, shutting off my laptop and getting my shoes back on. I got a bag of some uncooked bacon, hoping it would be at least semi-appealing to the wolf, and hiked back out to where I saw it before. "Hello?" I looked around, sighing. Was it gone already...?

Just as I was about to leave, I heard a shy bark. I smiled and turned in the direction it came from.
Sure enough, there it was. The beautiful wolf. It seemed a bit frantic still, but less confused as it had earlier. It's blue eyes were twinkling with excitement when it looked at me. It's ears twitched slightly when I held up the bag of food slowly.

"Hey, bud..." I knelt down and slowly set a slice of the bacon on the ground. The wolf looked at it and hesitantly took it, eating it slowly with a confused expression. "Never had raw bacon?" I teased. The wolf looked down and made a nod gesture. I frowned. That was odd. The wolf seemed to have a human side... It responded intelligently and seemed to understand him.

"I thought dogs couldn't understand humans." I said curiously. The wolf looked up at me and made a whining sound. "What is it?" It stood, looking around anxiously, it appeared, and started running.
"Hey- Hey wait!" I called and ran after it, pushing through the tree branches and weeds. "Where are you going- Oh my god." My jaw dropped as I saw the wolf in the small clearing by a tree stump, sticking its snout into a discarded tee shirt. "Who's are these?" I asked and sat by him.

The wolf whined again, trying to get its head under the cloth, as if to put it on. It gave up and looked at me sadly.

"Are these..." I picked up the pair of jeans, looking at them. "Are you trying to tell me something?"
The wolf sniffed around the pants and nudged the pocket. With a sigh, I withdrew the phone that was inside and turned it on. "What about it? This has a passcode, anyways.."

The wolf looked around and trotted off, coming back with a mouthful of sticks. He dropped them and pushed them aside, pulling out a few and dropping them in front of me. "Four?" I frowned. He nodded at the phone. "Alright, then..." I said and put in the number four. "What next?"

The wolf moved two sticks.

"Two..."

He added three more.

"Five..." I looked up for the last number.

Then the wolf took away a stick again.

"Four." I sighed and hit 'enter.' To my surprise, the phone unlocked instantly. "No way... Is this- this is your stuff? How?"

The wolf's ears flattened to the sides as he laid down, huffing out. "Don't know, huh?" I sighed and pet between his ears. "I'm sorry, buddy... But what can I do?"

Again, he huffed through his nose. As a way of comfort, I gave him the rest of the bacon I brought. He ate it slowly, still obviously getting used to the new taste buds. Guess that was understandable...
"What's your name?" I asked. Maybe he could spell it out.

He stood and grabbed the sticks again. It took a little while for him to arrange them but stood back eventually for me to read.

"Andy..." I smiled. "Nice to meet you, Andy... I'm Ashley."

Andy nodded and sat down again, silent.

"How does this sound..." I began. "You can come stay with me. Does that sound okay?"

He sat up and shook his head.

"Andy, you're a small wolf.. I'll pass you off as my pet if anyone asks." I shrugged. "But I have to get stuff ready, okay? So will you be okay hanging out here by yourself for a while?"

Andy nodded, watching as I stood.

"I'll be back later, I promise." I smiled and went home.
