The Loners.

Chapter One - Where everything went straight to hell.

*Maeve's Point of View*

Hello, my name is Maeve. I'm a sixteen year old girl at Lakeside Central Highschool. I'm writing this in an elavator with a notebook I found in a locker. I guess I'll start from the beginning. It all started about a year ago. It was the morning of my first day of highschool. It was just me and my brother Austin since my dad had left for a buisiness trip the previous day. He leaves the state quite often since he got his new job about right when my mother died, about two years ago. I had just turned fifteen over the summer. Highschool was supposed to be my fresh start from middle school. I probably would have been right.. I was super excited and out of bed at five in the morning. I made breakfast for me and my brother Austin, who was ready to start his senior year in highschool... God, thinking of Austin is painful. I remember him driving us to the school in his jeep, him asking me if I was nervous and giving me a few pointers on what to do. Anyways, we got to the school and I was in my homeroom, going up to talk to the teacher when suddenly the teacher stopped speaking. Warm, crimson blood suddenly splattered all over me. I screamed with everybody else as her chest suddenly exploded, coating me and the chalkboard with bright red blood and bits of her innards. "Fuuuucck.." I had moaned before violently vomitting on the ground. That's all I remember before I blacked out. All hell broke loose by the time I finally woke up. Everyone was running around, screaming as their hair started falling out. Literally. All the teachers had died the same way the first one did. So did all of eighteen year old seniors, I soon found out from someone. Austin had been eighteen. I screamed for Austin as I ran, yelling even louder when I found his mutilated body, his chest cavity wide open. I threw myself on him, screaming in my sobs. Some people tried to leave the school. That's when they came. The soldiers. They shot down everyone who tried to open the door. Soon, they covered every single window and door with cement. They covered the whole quad as well in a plastic top that's similar to one of those tupperware tops. They broke a hole in it an hour later and that's when a soldier dropped in, wearing a haz mat suit. He pulled out a megaphone as we all made a huge circle around him. "Your school has been put under quarantine. A nearby lab has accidentally spread the virus over this state and it thrives in teenagers. The day you legally become an adult, the virus kills you. Only then will you be allowed to leave this school, the day you turn eighteen. We will be providing provisions for you of course but there will be no escaping. Fail to comply, and you will be shot without hesitation." he said before he was lifted up through the hole in the quad. A while later, we all watched as a huge block of food, water, clothes, condoms, tampons and god knows what else was slowly brought down. We all ran for it like animals, taking whatever we could. We eventually put all of the dead bodies in sealed locker graves so the school didn't smell so much. Our hair started growing back, stark white. That's when people started gangs, for protection and more people to team up with for food drops. There's Varsity, The Pretty Ones, The Sluts, The Skaters, The Geeks, The Nerds, and The Freaks. They all have their own colors to tell them apart. The Sluts dye their hair red, Varsity and The Pretty Ones dye their hair yellow, The Freaks dye their hair blue. The Skaters, Nerds and Geeks make their hair black but they just use it more creatively, shaving parts of their heads and using other colors... I don't know. We're just able to tell them apart some how. The rest of us who don't have gangs are called Scraps. Our hair is still completely white with no gang's color coding us. We fend for ourselves. It hasn't changed since. We're still all complete barbarians. I'd say at least five people get killed at each food drop. At least. I live in this elavator, it's quite cozy actually. I'm just preparing for the next food drop. I hope I get some good things, but at the same time I don't. People literally kill each other for such goods as shampoo and canned peas. Varsity has a mountain of food in their gym. The Pretty Ones are with Varsity and they get their share too. Way too much for just them. The rest of us struggle to survive. I better get going. I don't want to be late for the food drop or I won't get anything. There's a chance I won't make it, so this is what happened if anyone finds this notebook. I hope to be able to write in you more soon. Goodbye for now. - Maeve
