Twisted

Fender Precision

A week had past and I was released from the hospital. I was given a prescription medicine to take for my depression and schizophrenia, which they had started during my time in the hospital. I was so relieved that I didn’t have to hear that god damn voice in my head anymore. CC drove me back to my house, my parents and brother, Eli were waiting anxiously inside. Eli, being the overprotective brother that he was, quickly engulfed my tiny frame into his broad one, and kissed the top of my head. I could hear CC telling my parents a fake story about what happened. He said that I had gone on a walk with him and I fell onto a broken bottle, being the clumsy person I was they believed it. He asked if he could stay here until tour which started up in two or three months, since he had no where to stay and they gladly agreed. Eli had told me that after graduation he was going to move to Chicago and start to look for work there. I smiled and told what a great idea that was. I dragged him upstairs to my room, and rummaged through my drawers trying to find something. I soon found it under a bunch of my old music sheets and gave it to him. It was a pick for my bass that had always given me good luck. He took it gladly, hugging me again. He stuck around for three or four more days before he had to go back to Ball State, promising me that he would call every time he could. We said our goodbyes, watching him leave. The next three days CC and I had spent talking over the things that happened over the time we weren’t together. My birthday was tomorrow and I was hoping that he wouldn’t remember, but with my parents here there was no doubt that he wouldn’t be reminded for them.

CC and I were downstairs, spread out on a few blankets that we had put down on the floor. My parents had gone out of town for their class reunion, leaving the two of us together. I was wearing black plaid pajama pants, and a cut up Falling in Reverse shirt on. I had my hair up in a ponytail, with my bangs pulled out of my face. I hadn’t really bothered with make up since I’ve gotten out of the hospital, because I’ve gone nowhere but the grocery store. CC laid next to me, hair pulled back in a bun, with grey sweat pants on and a Metallica shirt on.
“Can you get me another, Monster? Pleaseeeeeeee, babe?” He begged me, giving me a puppy dog face. I shook my head at him, he was already hyper enough.
“No more, you need to burn off some of the energy you have. After that, I will give you more.” I replied, shielding the Monster by wrapping my arms around it. A delirious smile spread onto his lips as pulled me to my feet, dragging me down to the basement. My eyes grew wide looking at what my parents had renovated it to. I walked over to the sound board, running my fingertips over it carefully. My eyes drifted across the Peavey Classic 30/112 amp. No, is it really…? I looked back at CC, smiling widely. “Is that really…” I trailed off receiving a nod from him. I bent down, examining the shape it was in. “No fucking way…” I whispered. This was the amp that my brother and I played on the year we won the state talent search. I heard CC come up behind me, taking my hand in his again.
“There’s something else I want to show you.” He said, leading me into the sound booth. He pointed to the back corner of the room, encouraging me to go look at it. I walked forward, examining the foreign object. A huge smile grew on my lips, my eyes growing even wider. I turned back toward CC, struggling for words.
“CC, is that an F- Fender Precision?” I asked in awe. A wicked grin formed on his lips as he nodded.
“The best bass guitar known to man. Just don’t tell Ashley, he’d flip if he knew you had one. Our record label says that it’s not a right fit for the band.” He paused, letting everything sink in. “Happy Birthday, beauty.”
“My birthday’s tomorrow though…” I trailed off. He took out his phone, showing me it was a quarter after midnight.
“Technically, it is tomorrow.” He replied cheekily, walking over to me, handing the bass to me. I took it into my hands, admiring the beauty of it. I put the strap over my head, letting it rest on my shoulder. I played a C sharp and D flat feeling the vibrations of the guitar run through my body. I laughed, my eyes shining brightly as I continued to play. After a few minutes of practicing I started to play ‘Highway to Hell’ by AC/DC, hearing CC join in on the drums soon after. We finished the song, smiles on both of our faces. I placed my new bass on a nearby stand, walking over to CC.
“Thank you, Chris.” I whispered into his ear, kissing his jaw. “Best birthday present ever.” I pulled away, meeting his sparkling hazel eyes.
“You’re very welcome, beautiful.” He said, kissing the top of my head. “Now, about that Monster…”
