Children of Dawn

Chapter 11

CC’s POV
I looked at Jake for a moment. Trying to figure out what to do with him while he looked around with a paranoid look on his face.
“Dude I gotta go,” He said jerking his thumb in the direction of the road. I took my hands off of his shoulders and he looked like he was going to get ready to run again when suddenly I heard a loud knocking coming from the farm house. I turned and looked. A police officer was standing at the front door of the farm house. I felt my stomach sink and I grabbed Jake’s arm as he got ready to sprint in the opposite direction.
“Shit dude, it looks like I gotta get outta here too,” I said, “Stay right here. Hide in the foliage, if you don’t see me two minutes after I go into that house, run,” Jake looked at me for a moment, I could see him debating. Did he trust me or not? We looked at each other for a moment and I knew that we both could feel the clock ticking. Finally he nodded and slunk back into the woods. I took off in a dead sprint back to the house, my feet crunching over the corn husks that lay on the ground. Fear moved me faster than I’d ever moved before, and thanks to the farm labor I was in better shape than I had ever been in. I bounded up the back porch steps and slipped quietly in the back door within a few seconds of leaving Jake. I could hear the lady of the house talking to the police officer at the front door. I didn’t stop to listen to what he was saying.
I rounded the corner and took the steps two at a time as I got up the stairs as quickly as possible. The police officer could have seen my legs as I bounded up the stairs but that was about it. In the hallway at the top of the stairs there was a pull down cord for the attic. I jumped up and pulled down on the cord. The stairs rattled down and I was up them even faster, they lead to my little upstairs bedroom. I suddenly realized that I was not going back to that room. The thought made me sink with sadness. It was a warm bed and a place where I had found a sort of second family for myself. I shook off the sadness, I would have time for it once Jake and I had escaped. I grabbed a backpack off the floor and pulled my mattress off the bed. Underneath was a wad of cash that I’d been paid with. I wasn’t sure how much it was, but it was better than nothing. I threw it into the very bottom of the bag and then piled clothes on top of it. I sprinted out of the attic room and back down the stairs. The cop was still standing in the entryway. I swung around the corner and headed in the opposite direction, the kitchen.
I felt bad for it but I opened up the cupboards and shoved every last nonperishable canned food item I could into my backpack. I heard the floorboards behind me creak as I was zipping up the bag. I turned quickly and threw the bag onto my shoulders. The cop stood in the doorway to the kitchen, he looked surprised. Leslie was standing next to him, she was just as confused as he was surprised.
“My god that’s him,” The cop said. Leslie looked at me, begging for an explanation.
“I’m sorry, Leslie. Just remember that I never would have hurt you or the girls,” I said. The cop lunged at me and I swung my bag, the soft part with all the clothes in it hit him right in the side of the face. Knocking him to the side. I threw the bag over my shoulders again and took off out the back door towards where I hoped Jake was still hiding. As I ran across the field I could hear the cop yelling. A second later the yelling stopped and the gunshots started. I ran even faster and splashed into the woods.
“Jake! Jake run!” I yelled, but he was nowhere to be found. I didn’t stop to try to find him. I sprinted downhill, through the part of the woods that looked easiest to travel through. It looked like Jake had ran through there because it was all trampled down. I followed his path, hoping to find him again. It felt like it would be better to run from the law with someone else than on my own. I was crashing through the woods, following the smashed grass and broken twigs, and i could hear the cop somewhere behind me. He was a little bit chubby though, and I was lean and in shape. Even with the backpack on I knew I was going to outrun him. Assuming they didn’t get the dogs on me. I was thinking about that when suddenly I pushed through some bushes and there wasn’t ground below me anymore. There was a cliff, and I was over the edged. It was a long way down with rocks at the bottom. At that moment I knew that I was actually dead. Suddenly, before I could scream I felt hands grab me under the arms and they started dragging me back up onto solid ground. I writhed around in the grip, trying to get away from the cop that had somehow caught up to me.
“Stop fighting dude! I’m trying to save your life here!” Jake yelled as he pulled me up. I let him haul me onto a pebbly ground. Once my butt was on the ground I scrambled back from the edge as fast as I could, my heart leaping out of my chest. We weren’t in the same place that I’d fallen from. We were in a small cave that was carved into the side of the ciff. The lip of land stuck out just a few inches into the air before there was another straight drop to the bottom. I leaned against the cave wall and tried to catch my breath. Jake scooted back and sat next to me. He was panting too.
“Are you okay?” He asked. All I could do was nod.
“Thanks,” said after a moment. Suddenly a few clumps of dirt fell past our hiding place and I heard someone swear.
“Holy cow,” the police officer’s voice said from the top of the cliff. Jake and I didn’t move, we barely even breathed. I heard the crackling of a radio, a voice came over it and I couldn’t hear what it said.
“Yeah, I don’t think that backup will be needed. He got away again,” The officer said between gasps for breath. Then his heavy footsteps turned and thudded off back towards the farmhouse. Jake and I didn’t make a sound for a few minutes, even after the sound of the footsteps disappeared. We just sat next to each other in the dying light and listened. There was nothing but crickets as the day faded quickly to dusk. I had to break the silence.
“Dude how did you manage to fall in here?” I asked. Looking over at Jake.
“I did the same exact thing you did, only I wasn’t going as fast. I managed to land on that little ledge and keep my balance until I crawled in here. I don’t know how, it was an act of God,” He said shaking his head. He crawled back to the front of the cave and looked down.
“What I really want to know is how the two of us are going to climb out of here,” He said. I crawled up next to him and looked down. It was a sheer drop to the bottom. Suddenly my mind whirled and I felt my stomach do a flip, I got away from the edge as fast as possible.
“What’s the matter with you?” Jake asked turning to look at me.
“I’m scared of heights,”
