Night Watch I: Eliza, Ward of Andrew

Big Momsie and Grand Master Filth (or) a nice, solid bitch

*Andrew's POV*

After a lot of chanting, hand movements, and stuff I couldn’t really follow, Mairsil had departed with Odhran's corpse following close behind. Apparently she could call out to it to orient it, and needed to signal with a bark when they had arrived, letting the energy, er, him, know he was dismissed.

Dani had promised to give Odhran Mairsil’s greetings and affection the next time he saw Alice, if he could find Odhran among the swirling sea of the dead. Dani had swatted at me with his staff when I had given him a skeptical look and asked me if I thought only species with two legs had a lasting spirit, those that suited my purposes as well, or if it wasn't too far-fetched to imagine that all life was equal? I hadn't really thought about it, and Big Momma had just snickered. All three barghests had stood quietly as the two green forms walked due North, towards the Grey Path.

After that, Big Momma had walked off with Donavan and Dani, to have a brief talk, before Donavan went East to presumably scope out Odhran's territory. I wasn't thrilled to be alone with Eliza by Dymas, but he sat calmly. If anything, he seemed a little embarrassed. Poor guy stank something incredibly fierce.

When Dani and Big Momma returned, I caught Dani's subtle wave. Eliza and I leisurely walked some ways Northeast, towards the Village, to give them some space. A short time later, only Conjurer and Big Momma caught up with us.

Big Momma surprised me by breaking the silence first in an amused tone. "You are a funny little man, Andrew. You know my full name, and its meaning, and yet you still think of me as 'Big Momma.'" I felt myself flushing as Eliza burst out laughing.

Eliza turned to Big Mo-Cedra. "Well, you do have a bloody long name, you are really fucking big, and you are quite a mother, alright!"

Cedra laughed, still a kind of grating sound, but not quite as spine-snapping as before. "You are also a comical little woman, Eliza. Your language is even more profoundly vile in your head. Has Dani told your lover this, Eliza?"

Even more foul? I laughed. "No, how is that possible?"

Dani groaned. "Cedra, don't goad them on! Um..." He must have been thinking something, as he went silent as we walked along.

Cedra grinned wickedly. "Yes, yes, you young men in the throes of hormones are just the devil to put up with, aren't you? Of course you’re wanting to get home and mate as soon as possible, after such a dry spell, Andrew! I know all about it, Dani, after dealing with my boys! And Andrew, by the devil's lantern, come of age, and you were refusing bitches, eh?" Gods! How to respond? I felt my face get hotter, but couldn't really deny it. I mean it was sort of true, but different, a matter of context!

"How contrary! Strange man, you are, I hope everything’s working alright, piping and whatnot!" What in the nine hells could I say to that?!? "Good you found a nice, solid bitch like Eliza to keep you in line, whelp you bunches of squirming, robust litters-" I choked, Eliza stumbled and fell, and Cedra and Dani both started roaring with laughter.

Questions started pouring through my head- children? Litters of children? But-

Cedra snorted, "Ah, easy there, pint-sized, flustered warrior! How adorable you are in your confusion!” Was it me or had a giant barghest just made a maternalistic squealing noise over my reproductive prospects? “Did you really think I could get so old, while remaining completely unawares of the differences between the Fae social system and mine, eh?" She grinned. “Not that I play by the rules.” Had she just winked? Or did she have crap in her eye?

Eliza started chuckling first, then I joined her. Eliza got up from the leafy Forest floor where she had fallen, then punched me lightly in the shoulder. "Well, great! I guess pressure's off us to get married and spawn for at least a few hours. Good, considering we just fucking met, Mr. Butt-fucking-Right."

Mr. Butt-fucking-Right? That wasn't fair! I'd played by the rules and entered only orifices strictly by verified invitation, none of which included the back door! "That's Mr. Cunny-fucking-Right to you, Princess Charming!" Eliza groaned.

"No need to share that, you pervert!" She scowled at me.

"Share what?" How was I the pervert, here, in all this? I kept walking, not clear on how I had somehow revealed great mysteries of our barely begun sex life when the two other members of our company were bloody mind-readers. Surely they had deduced…? If not literally snatched the image from my mind! But I was no fool. If I pointed that out, it would do me no favors.

Dani tapped me on the shoulder, giving me the thumbs-up signal. What was that for? Why was Big Momma rolling her eyes at me? Their games were wearing on me, I couldn’t wait to get home and have a break from having my mind open like some kind of peel-less fruit.

Big, er, Cedra cleared her throat. “Before we get into town, just so you two are aware, Dymas and Donavan are sharing the territory now made by what was mine and Odhran’s. They intend to work together for some things, and attempt independence for others. Barghests heal more quickly than Fae do, but even so, I intend to come check on Dymas in a few night's time, to ensure he's healing well.I don’t know if any of that would affect you, but Dani mentioned you are an Officer on the Night Watch, Andrew. They will be most active at Night."

She paused for a moment, seeming to consider. "The reason I banged him up so badly was not just to be cruel. Both Dymas and Donavan are coming of age. Dymas in particular has been blinded lately by his hormones. It's imperative that they not see me as a female barghest, only as their mother. Hopefully, they will be exposed to potential mates soon."

She exhaled heavily. "It is better now, with me gone. I was so weary of beating my own sons. I just hope they learned enough, that they will survive."

I saw Eliza looking at Cedra, concerned. "How many children have you had? Have not many survived"

Cedra shook her head. "I don't know. I don't even know how old I am. Most of my children have not survived for long, but I make sure they have a better start than most of my kind." She seemed to lapse into distant memories of her past.

Dani made a funny noise. "Cedra! You remember a time when there was more than one Soul of the Forest? How many?!"

What the fuck? That was ancient history, truly ancient... "At least six? I did not care for Fae doings for thousands of years, Dani. After some time, I remember hearing that there had been a war, and only six remained."

Whoa. "Cedra... You must be hundreds of thousands of years old. Maybe more."

Cedra shrugged. "That’s not important. What matters is that there is only one Soul now, and that your people protect it. Thus, I will go with you, and protect it for the rest of my days, or all of that time crumbles to dust. None of my family will survive without a Soul, Dani. None of those years mean anything without it. My legacy will die, as will yours, whatever it may be. I am glad you sent the Watch to stalk my family, Andrew, for they have brought Dani to me. Now I may help you protect the Soul, and, in so doing, save what remains of my dynasty.”

We walked on for about an hour in silence. Well, the mind readers may have been chatting, who could have said?

Eliza brought up a good point. “Dani, I’m very new to the Wild Ones. But might I suggest a Town Meeting, or something, just to mention Cedra, the possibility of her sons, assuage everyone’s fears? Perhaps in the literal sense? So that, when they walk by your shelter and feel shear terror, they don’t lose control of their bladders?”

Cedra, didn't seem offended. "Keeping the aura away is not difficult. When we enter your Village, as I have discussed with Dani-" I figured they were chatting! "-I am capable of assuming another form that is less fearful to Fae, though it will still be out of place." I glanced at her, interested.

"Have you heard of humans?" Humans? Beasts of somewhat fabled state, really. Supposedly, they had ruled the world, millions and millions of years ago, but were now extinct. I had seen drawings. They were incredibly plain, you could see why they had died out (if they ever existed, it wasn’t like artifacts remained or any sort of proof)- unable to fly, use energy, completely mundane, they all looked almost identical. I nodded.

Cedra smiled, and I wondered what she was thinking. "I can assume the form of a human woman. It might get some odd looks, but hopefully less panic than if I walked to Dani’s shelter as I am now?"

A human? What advantage could that- "Because my kind are very old, Andrew. Humans used to be everywhere. The ability to appear as a human used to be the ability to disappear in a crowd, to masquerade. Now it's an almost useless parlor trick. I can't remember the last time I did it." Well, I imagined everyone would just think she was a damaged Fae, and try to stare without being obvious or getting caught.

We chatted amicably about nothing in particular until I knew we’d be getting within sight of the Night Watch lookouts soon. I turned to give Cedra a warning, and found myself looking at Dani putting his robe over a naked woman! “Whoa, sorry!”

I turned back around, totally mortified. Cedra laughed. “I am no less dressed than I was before, young man.” How bizarre! I could still tell it was her, but her voice was much less raspy and, well, horrible. She laughed even harder. “I’m dressed well enough to your Fae tastes. Goodness, you certainly are tall for your kind, aren’t you, Andrew?”

I turned to look at Cedra and was struck by her appearance. I could not have guessed her age at all, perhaps somewhere between 200 and 600? She had lovely black hair, and pitch-black eyes, but the side of her face was pulled up by the same hideous scar that disfigured her muzzle as a barghest- “I’m still a barghest, Andrew. Thank you for the complement on my hair, that’s very generous.”

Ooh, shit, was Eliza going to be jealous? I just thought Big Mom- I mean, Cedra’s hair looked nice, especially for a human that might be a million years old, I didn’t want to bone her, shit, I loved Eliza-

Dani couldn’t take it. “Andrew! Does Eliza look jealous?”

I looked at Eliza. She was snickering silently at me. “You’re ridiculous, Andy! Let’s finish escorting Big Momsie and Grand Master Filth to the Gate, so we can go practice copulating, eh?” After a brief moment of embarrassment, I decided that was, actually, a great idea.
