Night Watch I: Eliza, Ward of Andrew

You're quite the pessimist, you know that? (or) DECISION IS FINAL

*Eliza’s POV*

I sat across from Patti and Alice, nervous and trying not to fidget. Patti, apparently, was not just the Grand Healer, but the Great Healer of the Forest, perhaps the most famed Dawn Fae of our times. I thought her name had sounded familiar. When I had entered their massive tent, carrying Andrew, all of them had gone silent. I guessed they had expected me, at some point, and I had proved to be correct. After explaining that Andrew and I had just been training, and that he had very minor bruising and a concussion, Patti and Alice had pulled me aside for a chat, sending a babbling Andrew off with a fellow named Nick.

Patti told me that she had a seat on the Council representing the Healers, and had known that an exiled murderer was coming to the Wild Ones, known what I was accused of, and felt instinctively that something stank. Like the rest of the Council, she had said nothing too openly, not wanting to set off hostilities with Merry Willows. She had hinted that there had been some heated debate, which had made me curious, but she didn't go further, and I hadn't dared to ask.

But then, Patti had told me she had pulled Alice aside shortly thereafter, and taken him into confidence. Alice was Night Fae, and the Grand Conjuration Healer of the Wild Ones. Patti had said without fuss that he was the best Grand Conjuration Healer she had ever known, to which Alice had snorted.

Though Alice had put it more delicately, they revealed that Patti had convinced Alice to rip the truth from the dead man I had killed. The thought of Alice speaking to the spirit of that filthy monster made me sick. Surely, it had told him only lies.

And so, here we sat. Two well-respected, full-blooded Fae, of the highest social standing, and one murdering, mongrel exile. I waited for them to tell me their thoughts. If they would not heal me, I would die. While I would accept this, I was afraid Andrew would get terribly upset…

Alice cracked his back with a sigh. “Eliza, you’re quite the pessimist, you know that? How can you possibly think that? That thing could not resist my compulsion and spilled its guts, it told us the truth as it was, not as it would have wanted it to be when it was living. I mean, really, how you could think we would do that, that we would allow that?” I sat up straighter, alarmed. Had I said that out loud? “No, no, sorry. It’s a bad habit, I’ll stop skimming.” Patti smacked him lightly on the arm.

“Don’t be a dickhead, Al.” He shrugged. They kept looking at each other. After a moment, I deduced Alice had to be reading Patti's thoughts. Bizarre.

“I know, Pat! You should tell her, chick-bonding, and all that. She thinks I’m creepy, everyone thinks conjurers are creepy-“

I couldn’t resist interrupting him. “-I don’t, Alice. I’ve just never had my thoughts read. I know the feeling, though. No one likes hybrids, and everyone hates Dark Mountain Elves.” They both shook their heads, and Patti voiced their common thought.

“Eliza, we’re old. We’ve both traveled in our time. As it happens, we’ve both met a Dark Mountain Elf who helped defend a village of Fae for centuries.” My pulse quickened. Where? “We both met your grandfather, briefly, before he fell, on a diplomatic mission. Anyone who hates an entire species is a fool.” ...Grampy.

Alice looked thoughtful, and Patti’s expression softened. “You, too, defended that same village. For that, you were disowned, condemned, and cast out as a murderer. Eliza, you have the heart of a noble warrior. If others cannot see past your outer layers, we pity them. We have been waiting for you to come see us so we could heal you, and we refuse to accept any payment for your healing-“

“-But we won a great deal of money by wagering-“ Alice spoke directly into my mind, making my head vibrate.

WE REFUSE PAYMENT DECISION IS FINAL BEHAVE WOMAN

My nose tickled, I shook my head to clear it. “That’s really fucking neat.” They both laughed, then led me over to where there were even more people waiting, apparently all prepped and excited to work on a hybrid. At least they got a kick out of the eye thing once they got to work…

I've waited right to the end to comment. I loved this so much. I love all the characters and if this site would let me vote loads, I would. I wish it were more like wattpad in that respect. I've read the first chapter of the next installment and I can't wait. I'm super excited.
