Night Watch I: Eliza, Ward of Andrew

The sparring circle (or) Andrew- a real sensitive motherfucker

*Blasko’s POV*

Interesting. So Andrew was smitten with his ward. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised, the poor guy had been celibate for years, I figured it was part of why he was getting to be such an irritable, near-sighted bastard. But still, I hadn’t seen this coming. We’d just have to see what came of this, we’d just have to see... He was a good kid, I hoped he didn’t get hurt.

In the meantime, I knew better than to let on, Andrew was a real sensitive motherfucker, in some ways. You couldn’t ask for a better fighter, or a better strategist, and he rallied the Night Watch behind him like some kind of fluffy-haired messiah, he was a born leader. But when it came to love, he was like a lost puppy.

And this Eliza. I wondered what her full story was, but I trusted in the Council’s judgment completely. If she chose to share it with anyone, it was her choice, and if anyone harassed her about it, I would come down on them so hard they would wish they had never been born. From now on, Eliza was one of us, a Night Watchman of the Wild Ones. Unfortunately, that meant I had to figure out if she was currently able to engage in combat at all, or if she was in such bad shape she needed to be posted as a lookout at a sentry point.

Were Eliza too wounded to fight, I knew better that to try and suggest Eliza and Andrew join Doyle in the armory. Andrew would have a stroke, being so far away from the walls. I immediately rejected the idea of suggesting to Andrew that Eliza be assigned a new warden, so she might work with Doyle, if it came to that. Honestly, I was glad to see Andrew truly interested in something, for once. And Eliza, unless I was mistaken, could potentially face some challenges in the near future. She would be able to use a high-ranking ally like Andrew on her side.

So, hopefully, Eliza would still be able to, more or less, at least, sort of put up a fight. If not, I’d settle her into a comfy lookout spot for however long it took. I would work with Eliza, she was one of ours, and we took care of our own. Speaking of which, if Andrew didn’t get her some less revealing clothes soon, since pay wasn’t due for a while yet, I’d bring her some myself, when they were due back, in three nights…

My thoughts were interrupted as Eliza joined me at the training circle. “Eliza, what restrictions do you feel you have on sparring right now? I know you are injured.” I saw a small crowd of other Watchmen on their break gathering, Andrew included, looking sullen.

Eliza was overweight, with puny-looking arms, but she was tall, stood straight, and spoke very matter-of-factly. Plus those huge boobs. It was a little disconcerting. “My wing is broken and splinted, it would be an inconvenience if it had to be re-splinted. I have an infected, long laceration on my stomach, and a heavy blow might affect the seal on the medication that was applied.” I nodded.

“I wasn’t really wanting anyone to try and kill anybody, please, everyone no breaking of bones, no knocking loose of obviously carefully applied splints, ok? I’m just trying to see if you’re still able to help defend the wall in a combat situation, or if it would be best to post you to lookout, as a sentry, while you heal. Don’t worry, Eliza. It happens all the time. You are a Night’s Watchman of the Wild Ones, now, and we are a family. I’m not trying to haze you, I will give you time to rest if you need it, ok?” I made appeasing gestures with my hands, but they seemed totally unnecessary, Eliza was obviously unconcerned. Well, they seemed to set Andrew at ease a bit, anyway.

“Absolutely, First Officer. I feel I am fit for combat, but I agree it is appropriate to assess my skill level and strengths. How would you like me to proceed? I come from a smaller tribe, we may practice differently.” She was really cocky. No wonder she and Andrew got along! Honestly, it might be good for her to have one of the others sock it to her a little bit and teach her a bit of humility. I knew that Merry Willows saw a lot of terrible raids, at times, but we were defending the Soul of the Forest, here. That was deadly serious, and left no room for arrogance. I motioned Nikki over, and caught Andrew making a face. Seriously, Andrew didn’t have to be such a moody bastard, Nikki was a really nice guy!

“This is Nikki, Nikki this is Eliza, she is new to the Watch.” I had picked Nikki out because he was a friendly guy, and when he wasn’t actually angry and trying to kill someone, he was too slow to do much harm. They shook and nodded at each other. “Nikki, did you catch the bit about Eliza’s wing and stomach wound?” Nikki nodded.

Oh boy. Nikki was in the zone. I guessed he had gotten tired of hearing about what a sweet guy he was, and now he was intent on beating Eliza into the ground. I hoped I wouldn’t have to wake a Healer to get Eliza fixed up before Andrew’s planned trip tomorrow after all.

I dug the little red hanky out of my pocket. “Ok, I was thinking, a bit of hand-to-hand, just for a minute or so. The second I raise this red flag, fight’s over, we’ll all shout out to stop, and you kids need to disengage, alright? Try and keep it inside the circle, ok? This isn’t a tournament, but this isn’t a group activity either.” Eliza and Nikki stepped inside the circle. I was about to tell them to start, when Eliza extended her hand to Nikki, smiling. Surprised, even briefly losing his crazed look, Nikki shook it, with a small smile too. Kids, man.

“Start!”
