Night Watch I: Eliza, Ward of Andrew

We were likely all headed out on a one-way trip

*Andrew's POV*

Decisions were made quickly and without debate. A small counter-strike force was selected to go after the Soul in an attempt to track it down and destroy it. The remainder of the Village was going to prepare to fight to the end in the event that anything came for the shard of the Soul that still remained. Elder Lemmy put me in charge of the pursuing force, and I didn’t question his decision. Apparently he was electing to take Juliet’s words literally.

The mountain tigers weren’t the fastest, but they had the greatest endurance, so they were selected as mounts. That meant that only tribesmen that had formed bonds with a tiger could come with me, eliminating virtually all potential members of the Day Watch. It went without saying that the task at hand was a veritable suicide mission, so, in lieu of compelling Watchmen to come with Eliza and I, I asked for volunteers.

Gerard and Fronz joined us from the Dawn Watch, Second Officer Ashley and Jinxx from the Dusk Watch, and Ronnie, Big Pete, and all five of Whiplasher’s group of Scouts from the Night Watch. Dani declared he was coming astride Cedra, and I had to turn away the foolish, but well-intended, bravery of several Initiates from all Watches.

I knew the undertaking might require covert tactical work. I also knew the Motionless were the only non-Watchmen that could ride koq-nindji, so I asked them if they would come with us. I wasn’t terribly surprised when all seven of them agreed. Assassins weren’t shy about risk-taking.

With only enough time to gather water skins and a few Days’ worth of food each, we took off into the Dusk, back along the way the enemy army had retreated. The Soul had been taken through some kind of portal, true, but Papa assured us that it could not have been mystically spirited all that far, certainly not to wherever the enemy’s stronghold lay. He suspected that there would be a trail that branched off, a group of them that had the Soul that would be moving faster than the main hoard. Our goal was to intercept the lesser group before the Soul was transferred to whatever malevolent force Juliet had so feared. If we failed, we’d have to try and break into wherever the trolls were based, quite possibly facing enchanted defenses and the malicious architect behind all of this directly. Not desirable.

I hadn’t been able to suppress a chuckle when I had seen that literally every single one of the Motionless had befriended a black mountain tiger, when so few of them even had that coloration, the majority being red with white stripes. I was initially worried for Eliza, as she’d never actually ridden a mountain tiger, but Le Noel kept her on his back as he ran along beside Ochocinco and I.

For just a moment, I was struck numb by the situation. Perhaps an hour ago, Eliza had died in my arms. I had just gotten her back from the unthinkable, and yet we were headed off together towards our probable gristly death. Fortunately, I was free to muse for the moment. Ochocinco needed no guiding as of yet, following the lead of Whiplasher’s boys as they scouted ahead for signs of a second portal or another, smaller group of the enemy.

Whatever fortune would bring us, we had little choice but to proceed. The Soul was in enemy hands, and it couldn’t stay there, even at the cost of its destruction. No one had even bothered discussing trying to capture the Soul and bring it back; it was too risky with so small a strike force and an unknown amount of ground to cover. No, we were likely all headed out on a one-way trip-

“Stuff it Andrew! No one needs to hear that!” I turned in my seat to see Dani shaking a fist at me, looking irritated, and Cedra grinning toothily. Mind readers! Bloody hells!
