Night Watch I: Eliza, Ward of Andrew

I fear it is too late

*Andrew’s POV*

I was almost there, but I lost sight of Eliza when a Juggernaut came at me, swinging at my midsection with a club. I was able to dodge by catching some air, then disarmed the thing by cutting its club-carrying hand clean off at the wrist. It bellowed and went to its knees, reaching futilely for its lost hand.

I looked up, and what I saw was immediately burned forever into my brain.

There was a spear going in Eliza’s back and out her stomach; she was impaled. Blood was dripping down her face from her mouth, covering her tusks; she looked surprised. I screamed wordlessly as every fear I had came to life in front of me.

It took a second for my brain to start working again. In that time, I saw Eliza turn and cut the kobold that had been wielding the spear in half. She tottered on her feet before grasping at the lance in her gut, and I screamed again, leaping towards her, “No! Eliza, stop! Don’t touch that!”

If I could just get to her first, if she didn’t move the spear, no, no, no, no! I didn’t have far to go, but I felt like my legs were made of molasses, like I couldn’t move fast enough. Something tried to grab me and I dodged without looking. If she just didn’t move it, maybe she could-

She started tugging the spear forward, through her, and I absolutely lost my mind. “NO! NO! STOP!”

Eliza saw me, she heard me! She looked at me, her black eyes shaking audibly even in the din around us, then pointed at a massive troll that was working some kind of portal incantation. It had to have the Soul. In that moment, I didn’t care about the Soul, didn’t care about anything else in the world. I had to save Eliza, this couldn’t happen again!

Eliza fell to her knees just as I reached her, blood and something orange running freely from her mouth. She pointed weakly again towards the enormous troll, “Soul.”

I shook my head as I supported her, “There’s another way, I promise. Just hang on, you’ll be fine.” It was true; there was another way. I should have told her earlier, dammit.

She coughed and a purple clot ran down her chin. “I’m done, Andy. Say goodbye.” Her blackened eyes were watery and one was bloodshot.

I shook my head, denying the truth in her words, the possibility that I had just turned my back on the Soul for nothing. “No; never! You’ll be fine-“

Eliza gripped one of my hands awkwardly and squeezed it, “-I love you.”

I returned her squeeze. “I love you too.” Eliza smiled briefly before going totally limp in my arms, and I felt like everything was dropping out from under me. Even her black eyes had stopped shaking.

I had to stay focused; Eliza needed me. I immediately honed in on Eliza’s last hope, my only hope of ever being happy again. Papa. I had to find him before it was too late.

Help!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, but I wasn’t expecting anyone to hear me. Instead, I was hoping that someone would pick up on my thoughts, if I wanted it enough. I knew I did; I would deafen their minds to anything else.

Vaguely I was aware of the fact that the gargantuan troll that Eliza had indicated had taken the Soul had disappeared, but what mattered the most to me then was that the enemy forces appeared to be retreating. “Help!” Inconvenience aside, I didn’t care about the battle any longer, I just wanted them out of my way. I had to find Papa Emeritus!

I felt for Eliza’s pulse and found nothing. “HELP! PAPA!

Keeping Eliza upright was taxing when she was dead weight, so I carefully lowered her onto her side, not allowing the spear to be jostled. With my hands free, I reached into my vest and got out my travel bottle of Lover’s Last Kiss. With a horrible sense of déjà vu at the smell of honeysuckle, I upended it over the front end of Eliza’s wound. Nothing happened, and I started to truly panic. “HELLPP! SOMEBODY!”

I turned when I heard a familiar, grating voice, “Oh, little warrior.” It was Cedra, covered in blood. “Papa has heard you and he comes, but I fear it is too late.”

I was vaguely aware of Dani rushing past Cedra, and over to Eliza, but those words rung in my ears, through my being, over and over again. ‘I fear it is too late… too late… too late.’

I've waited right to the end to comment. I loved this so much. I love all the characters and if this site would let me vote loads, I would. I wish it were more like wattpad in that respect. I've read the first chapter of the next installment and I can't wait. I'm super excited.
