Night Watch I: Eliza, Ward of Andrew

Ashley was unexpectedly gracious about being covered in my puke

*Andrew’s POV*

The last several days had been extremely unglamorous. The next time I heard some young Trainee going on about how ‘romantic’ and ‘noble’ being a Watchman was, I’d probably shit myself laughing. Just a couple days ago, I would have shit myself literally.

On our first Night back, Eliza started sneezing and getting a runny nose halfway through Watch. She was clearly in no shape to patrol or train. I was reluctant to go somewhere that wasn’t easily accessible to my Watchmen, so we swapped out with Michale and Chris K. for watchtower duty.

I had taken the opportunity to show Eliza how the howlers were put on alert. Of course we didn’t actually show the howlers the hand signal, everyone in the Village would have panicked. It was touching that her main concern had been that they were kept in a cage in the tower. Once I clarified that each of them only spent shifts in the tower, that their primary home was much larger and in the Village, she felt better.

Well, more accurately, she was less troubled about the howlers. Eliza steadily got sicker over the course of the Night. She started coughing right before the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, and her handkerchief was past due for a replacement. Once we were done with Watch at the coming of Dawn, we headed off to the Healer’s Tent yet again.

Melora whipped up a foul concoction for Eliza, some sort of powder to add to water. Melora took one look at me and declared that I would surely get sick as well, and fetched a second ration of the awful-smelling stuff. She even instructed poor Liza that she was to make sure I drank it as well.

Though I felt like a very dutiful partner as I tucked Eliza into bed, her eyes watery and her nose all red, I was also still very much subject to my hormones as they continued to spiral out of control. Ultimately, I had to excuse myself and take care of ‘things’ in my hammock, which made me feel like a callous asshole.

After some sleep and more of Melora’s putrid brew, Eliza seemed to be feeling a bit better, but I started feeling a bit green by Dusk. Eliza blamed me for not drinking the ‘tea’ (if you could call it that); she made me down some and brought it with us to Watch!

We were a sorry sight as we made our way to the Walls. Unfortunately, I projectile vomited out of nowhere during the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Ashley was unexpectedly gracious about being covered in my puke, and Eliza and I were sent home sick. Ashley actually walked us back to our shelter, berating me about being a workaholic. I assumed I looked as bad as I felt. I didn't even argue with him.

Unlike Eliza, I started retching and having the trots, in addition to being a snotty, coughing wretch. Eliza said it was because she had ‘hybrid vigor. ’I didn’t care why I was so much more miserable than she was; I just drank the filthy tea and tried my best to anticipate when I needed to go to the latrine on time.

Personally, I blamed the Initiates for our misfortune. Chad and Röbby had both said they felt a little off after running only one lap when I had been working with them. I hadn’t seen them around the Village on our Night off; this was surely their fault!

With feeling so crappy, I didn’t even have the energy to wank. Eliza certainly wasn’t in any shape to, er, appease my cravings either. So I kept getting boners at the slightest provocation. It was incredibly embarrassing!

Though I stopped having the runs shortly, I continued vomiting sporadically for almost two Nights. Eliza recovered much more rapidly, but, as my ward, she couldn’t leave me to get food from Commons or even go to the well for water. To my surprise, Ashley anticipated we’d have that problem when we didn’t show for Watch the next Night, and he came by with food after his shift. He even did a run to the well for us. Christian came by the next Day to check on us and bring scraps for the cats from Commons. I got the shock of a lifetime when First Officer Jake came by at Dusk with more food and some kind of herb, from David, for me specifically. He grinned at me knowingly, presumably about Eliza, and I feigned I didn't notice.

Another two Nights, several visitors, and Eliza getting increasingly restless from being unable to leave the shelter, and I was finally well enough to return to Watch. I hoped against hope that the skulking, mysterious enemy that was behind the organization of the trolls didn’t attack before I was feeling better, if not, preferably, before my antlers had finished growing and firmed up as well. Though Eliza and I weren’t met with an attack when we returned to Watch duty, we got a surprise so profound, it was a game-changer.

I've waited right to the end to comment. I loved this so much. I love all the characters and if this site would let me vote loads, I would. I wish it were more like wattpad in that respect. I've read the first chapter of the next installment and I can't wait. I'm super excited.
