Unknown Being

To his surprise, Matt was deemed stable enough to be released the following afternoon. He went home and immediately began writing furiously in his journal. He wrote about his fears.

I'm scared something is going to Kit-Kat. I kept having nightmares about her last night. She got raped and beaten by Vince. My dreams have come true before. Could this be an omen? What does this mean?? Ugh this is so frustrating! What do I do about this? Vince is in custody but if I know anything about him, he'll find a way to get himself out or get someone to bust him out. God damn him if he even lays a finger on my sister. I will not let him do so without getting revenge. I will protect her.

Cat walked into their room as he was writing. She hugged him from behind. "What's up, Matt," she asked softly. "What are you writing?" She read his entry very quickly to herself. "Oh, Matt, I'm going to be okay. I promise you I'll be careful. I know what he can do. He might get someone to bail him out, you're right. I'll be careful. I promise."

"I just don't want anything bad to happen to my sister and best friend. I'd be so upset, so angry if something happened to you, Kit-Kat."

"I know, Matt. I'll be careful. He has a lot of cronies. We know who they are. I'll do my best to stay out of trouble."

That's what she said. Of course that wasn't to be. A few days later, Matt had to stay after school to make up a test that he'd missed the day he'd been in the hospital. Cat, on the other hand, headed home. She didn't listen to music, wanting to stay as alert as possible. It was in vain, though, as some people decided to drive by her and shout all kinds of rude things at her. They called her, among other things, an incest-loving whore, and told her to fuck Matt. She tried to not let their words get to her, but she couldn't help but feel stung.

I'm going to have to talk to them," Matt said darkly when his sister told him of her walk home."Next time you even feel like someone is following you, keep moving. Don't even think about looking back until you hear a voice. Then decide. We all have a sixth sense. We should use it. Don't forget that." He looked her deeply in the eye and said, "Okay?"

"Okay," she said, nodding slowly. She wondered what her sixth sense would tell her.
