What's It Like To Be A Ghost?

What's Real and What's Not

The wheels of the moving van screeched to a stop in front of the newly renovated and bought house. Andy laid his head against the cool glass of the backseat window, looking at his family's new home. A soft baby blue color, with a white front door, garage door and window exteriors. The typical suburban home... A stereotypical white picket fence separated the freshly cut lawns on either side of the house.
One side had a large golden retriever barking at a squirrel that had taken cover up in the branches of a tree, the other was empty besides two old lawn chairs and an empty patio table between the two. Obviously an old couple lived there, judging by how worn the chairs looked.
"Woah... Chris, look over there." Andy could hear his mothers soft voice through his headphones as his playlist switched songs. Curiously, he wiggled an earbud out and glanced up. "Is that the house the realtor was talking about?"
"The Purdy house?" His dad frowned and looked out his window. "I believe so..."
Andy furrowed his brow. Purdy house? That was a weird name. Was that the name of the people who live there? He sat forward to look over some boxes in the seat next to him and peered over them, eyes widening. Woah, okay so it wasn't the name of the people living there, it was the name of the people that lived there. He could tell at one glance that it was no longer occupied, mostly because of the ugly green paint chipping off the house, the sunken in porch, the brown and broken fence and the boarded up windows- but also because of the annoying 'NO TRESPASSING' sign hung up in three different places.
Andy grinned to himself. Boy, he couldn't wait to sneak into that place... Just as he was about to get out, he saw a shadow of a small figure in the window on the top floor. Damn, did someone already beat him to it?
"Andrew?" His mom opened his door, raising an eyebrow. "Did you hear what your father said?" Andy looked back to the window, only to see the curtain moving a bit as the shadow vanished. What the hell...?
"No." Andy shrugged and climbed out, grabbing his boxes from the trunk. He carried them in, stealing another glance at the house before being nudged in by his mom who stood behind him with more boxes. He went up the nice carpeted stairs to his room.
The pile of boxes grew steadily until the moving van and car were both empty. Andy sat, surrounded by a circle of different sized boxes, all with different labels. He began to unpack his room decorations first.
Poster after poster, Andy taped them up on his wall and filled the boring white walls. Once one wall was successfully decorated, he moved to some of his clothes and began to put them in his closet. He set a pile of hoodies on a shelf and sighed, deciding to go take a break. He sat down in the window seat and glanced outside at the house. It was definitely intriguing...
Andy walked over to a box and dug out his laptop, sitting back down and setting it on his laptop.
"Lets see... Purdy House, Missouri.." he said aloud as he typed it. The first thing that popped up was one of those weird ghost hunting sites, but Andy opened it anyways out of pure curiosity. Why was it showing up on paranormal sites?
Before he could get the webpage to load, his dad called his name to get him downstairs for dinner. Since all the kitchen supplies were still packed, they had ordered some pizza and dug out some plates.
"Ew, Hawaiian?" Andy wrinkled his nose at the site of the pineapple on the pizza. His mom rolled his eyes and brought over the box holding the pepperoni pizza. Andy smiled victoriously and sat down, taking three slices. "So- whats the deal with the house across the street?" he said between bites.
His dad raised an eyebrow and shook his head. "It's just an old house, Andy. Nothing special."
"Nothing special? Oh, Chris, you know thats not true." His mom piped up. "The family who lived there last- their son died."
Andys face dropped. "Oh... How?"
"Nobody knows. Some say it was suicide, others say it was an accident and some of the old neighbors were convinced it was murder." His dad sighed in defeat. "Its nothing, okay, Andy? It was more than thirty years ago, so it's nothing more than just an old, abandoned house."
"Yeah- that someone died in! That's wicked cool!" Andy gaped. "Not that they died but- just- sorry, I'll shut up." he mumbled and looked at his pizza.
"It's not haunted, if that's what you're getting at."
"How do you know?" Andy shrugged.
"Because ghosts do not exist and you are not going anywhere near that house, understood?" His dad said sternly. Andy sighed and nodded, finishing his pizza in silence as his parents discussed going to meet the neighbors soon. Andy snuck back up to his room and sat back down with his laptop. He knew there was something weird about that house. It gave him... a weird feeling...
According to a couple of different sources, the house was haunted. Not just your average 'oh, the lights are flickering!' haunted. No, this was severely haunted. It was like a nightmare haunted house but ten times more nightmare element and less of the Hollywood floating object gimmick. There were stories of blood leaking through the faucets, coming up in the drains or sometimes even oozing out of walls and vents. Pictures would move- not just turn upside down or tilt- they would actually move locations. One woman, who claimed to be alone at the time, said that she turned her back for a couple of seconds and a portrait of the original family had disappeared. Where did she find it? That was the freakiest bit. She apparently found it in the underground cellar. Andy had heard of pictures moving, but never switching floors and rooms!
"This is fucking freaky.." Andy murmured to himself as he continued reading different stories. The house had been sold a total of three times- four, actually. But the thing with that was that the family had some movers take over stuff early and were told certain things- it didn't say what- about the nature of the house itself. So, only three residents had actually moved in. The longest stay was... Not even a full month.
Next, he pulled up a picture of the family and saw the boy that was killed in the house. Was that the boy in the window...?
"Andy, you better not be awake." His mom said on the other side of the door. Andy glanced at the time and groaned. It was past midnight already? Fuck, he got so lost in his internet digging...
"Of course not, mom!" Andy laughed awkwardly and shut off his laptop, climbing into his bed. His mom said nothing, walking back down the hall.
He was dying to go inside that house...
