Damage Control

"According to the LAPD, the gentleman was found with a blunt force trauma to the back of the head along with several bullet wounds in the upper torso. It is not yet known if this act of violence is related to the others in the area but we will be following the story and bring you the latest. On a brighter note, how amazing was the wea-"
I shut the TV off at that point. Every time I even tried to watch the news, they were either talking about someone being murdered or some other type of violence that was hitting the area. If I knew LA was this dangerous, I would have never moved out here to begin with. I didn't want to bring our child up in a world where people were getting attacked as soon as they walked out their doors. I was never used to this type of violence since I grew up in South. I'm sure there were violent acts that were placed upon people there but it was never this bad. I never had to worry about being jumped while i'm walking to my car or being attacked in my home. Granted, I did live in a pretty secluded place and the house was equipped with more security cameras than I could count, but it was still a pretty scary thing to think about.
I slowly removed myself from the couch and waddled my way into the kitchen. Ever since the beginning of my second trimester, my craving for olives had gone through the roof. Before I was pregnant, the only olives I ate were the ones that floated in my drinks. One would do me over for a month or so but now I just had to have them every single day. I even went as far as to place them on top of my ice cream when I felt like having something sweet. My husband absolutely hated it but I can't just deny our child what it wants; what baby wants, baby gets! As I was opening a new jar of olives, I heard the front door slam shut before heavy footsteps brought my husband into view. "Soph?" He yelled as I popped a few olives into my mouth. "Sophia!" I didn't bother answering since he would just come in the kitchen anyway, plus my mouth was stuffed with olives. Like I guessed, Andy came rushing into the kitchen seconds later looking about as mad as a hornet. "Why didn't you answer when I called you?" He asked, not even bothering to say hello or ask me how my day had been. "I had to rush here from work because you weren't answering the fucking phone!" I hadn't even realized he had called. My phone was sitting right beside me but his calls never came through. "They never came through, you know that I always answer when you call." He rolled his eyes as I tried to defend myself. "I'm sorry; I guess my phone must be out of service or something." I apologized as I looked down to the counter. I didn't know what his problem was but it was getting worse each passing day. Maybe the stress of his job was starting to weigh him down, I don't really know. All I know was that he wasn't the same happy-go-lucky guy he once was. It was like a caged animal was just waiting to be released and attack anyone close enough.
"Listen-" He started as he walked over to me and wrapped his arms around my growing waist. "I'm sorry for yelling at you but you know how worried I get about you and the baby." He placed a kiss on my lips. "I don't want anything to happen to my girls."I smiled into the kiss as he placed his hand on my stomach. This was the side of Andy that I loved the most. When he wasn't having his little meltdowns and getting upset about everything, he was the most compassionate and loving person i've ever met. He took the time out to do things for others instead of himself and put his whole heart and soul into it. He was loved by many people but sometimes I really wondered if he truly loved himself. The first time I met him was when I was 15 years old and I was smitten. He had the most gorgeous blue eyes but that's not what made me stop and admire him. The way he was standing up for not only himself but also for those around him was what made me stop and watch. He looked like the type of kid that your parents forbid you to hang around, let alone be in the same room with. You could see that he didn't give a crap about what others thought of him but he made sure to let them know that he was not one to be messed with. I on the other hand was someone who lived a privileged life. My parents owned several businesses in the town I grew up in and were well known in the community. We spent most of our weekends and some of the weekdays at the country club, playing tennis and golf with my parent's friends and their children. My mother entered me into every beauty pageant in a 100 mile radius, along with voice and acting classes. I was in the top ten percent of my class all throughout high school, becoming one of the many valedictorians of my senior class. It wasn't until I was out of high school and in college when I saw Andy again. He looked completely different than the last time I had saw him but that happens when you haven't seen the person in four years. His hair was much shorter but those blue eyes of his still sparkled like I remembered. He still had the same attitude that caught my eye when I was 15 but the angst that raged through him then was no longer visible. Gone was the 18 year old I had seen in the mall that day and in it's place was a successful business man with many important clients. It didn't take long for the two of us to finally realize that our feelings towards each other were more than platonic. I love him just as much as he loved me and that way of thinking led us to a chapel in Vegas on the night of March 29th, 2012.
My mother was not in the least thrilled to hear that her only daughter married someone that looked like Andy. She was in complete denial when I first told her and then the denial turned to rage. She wanted me to marry someone like my father and live in a gated community in the suburbs of Georgia. She never in a million years thought that I would end up with someone like Andy. He was little rough around the edges when you first meet him but then you realize that he's like everyone else. It wasn't like he was bum or anything. The guy owned a successful business and worked his ass off everyday. I figured she would have been happy about that but she was still concerned with her daughter being seen with a tattooed freak as she calls him. Even after being married for a little over three years, she still doesn't acknowledge that Andy's my husband. I don't even want to get into the issues she has about his friends.... "You taste like olives." I snapped out of my past as Andy's lips captured mine once again. "Our child is going to end up looking like an olive because that's all you eat." We both started laughing as I pushed him away and put the jar back in the refrigerator.
"Ash said that he's bringing his new friend to dinner." I rolled my eyes in the mirror as I put a finishing touch on my lip gloss. "I wonder what this one looks like." Every time we went out with Ashley, he had a new girl hanging off his arm. Last month, the girl he brought was so annoying that I had to hide in the bathroom in order to get away from her. The boys thought that it was a great idea to leave the two of us together so they could take a smoke and for us girls to get to know each other. I couldn't even get a word in with the girls. She asked me every question under the sun, even asking personal things that you aren't even supposed to ask someone you've known for years. I blamed the fact that I was pregnant and needed to go to the restroom just so I could get five minutes of peace. Andy had to physically come into the bathroom and make sure I was okay. "She's probably some bimbo he met on the beach." I interjected as I closed the bathroom light and walked back into our bedroom. "Let's just hope she's over the age of 18 this time." I nodded my head as I slipped on my sandals. Andy stepped away from the dresser and gave me a seductive smile before walking towards me. "Maybe I should just call Ashley and tell him that i'm not feeling well-" He wrapped his arms around my waist and nuzzled his face into my neck. "I'm sure he'll understand." His lips ghosted over my neck as I let out a slight moan. "I need you to make sure I get to feeling better." I looked into those beautiful eyes and smiled. I knew that if I let him continue, the dinner date we had planned with Ashley would go by the wayside and I would end up hearing about in the coming days. I placed my hands on Andy's chest and slightly pushed him away. "Later." I simply told him before pecking his lips once more and walking out the door.
Larissa Matthews, that was the name of Ashley's newest conquest. She looked like she just walked off the set of a Playboy shoot, not afraid to show what the plastic surgeon gave her. "Oh my gosh, I love your necklace!" She squealed out of nowhere, causing me to jump in surprise. I had the lucky opportunity to sit directly in front of her, while Andy sat in front of Ashley. I was in full view of what she had on display and my escape to the bathroom was looking better and better. "Thank you." I smiled as my hand went to reach for the charm. "Andy surprised me with it when we found out we were expecting." Her hands flew up to her mouth, a squeal escaping once again. "I had no idea you were even pregnant!" My forced smile immediately fell once I fully understood what had just come out of her mouth. How in the hell could she not realize that I was pregnant! It's not like I was hiding a fucking beach ball under my dress. I'm not eating for two just so I can eat more than I should. "How far along are you?" She continued to question. I looked over at my husband, who acted like he wasn't paying attention to anything that was going on. "28 weeks." I said monotone. She just nodded her head and offered her congratulations before going back to cuddling up to Ashley. I wasn't the type of person to get upset about things but being pregnant was not helping. "You wanna take a smoke?" Andy broke the silence as he started pulling his cigarettes out. Ashley just nodded his head before giving Barbie a kiss and removed himself from the booth. "Behave." Andy whispered in my ear before getting up himself and following Ashley to the entrance.
"So how long have you and Andy been dating?" She questioned after a few minutes of awkward silence. I took a long sip of my drink before giving her my answer. "We dated for about a four months before we got married." Her eyes casted down to my hand, seeing the diamond set that adorned my finger. "I had no idea!" She said annoyingly. "Well congrats on that as well." I just gave her a small smile before deciding that my time here with Malibu Barbie was up. "If you would excuse me for a minute, I have to run to the ladies room." She only nodded her head as I tried my best to remove myself from the booth. "Do you need help?" I just shook her off and hurried towards the restrooms. I didn't know how much longer I would be able to stay there and listen to the awkward silence that she was creating. At this point I would have rather had the girl asking a million questions and not the girl that looked like she had just came from Frankenstein's surgical table. I was just hoping that our dinner would arrive soon and we could get the hell out of here before my brain explodes. I was in the middle of locking myself inside the stall when screams of horror and a constant popping noise erupted from the other side of the wall. I didn't know what the hell was going on and I couldn't get a hold of Andy since I had left my bag out in the dining area. The noise became louder and louder, along with the screams that accompanied it. Tears flooded my eyes and my chest began to tighten when I realized that my husband and Ashley were in the middle of all the chaos. I already knew that the sounds being made were coming from some type of weapon and I had no idea if my husband was alive or dead at this point. All sorts of thoughts came running through my mind as I tried to figure out what to do at this point. I needed to find my husband but in order for me to do that, I would have to go out there and chance being injured or even killed.
After five minutes or longer of pure terror, the restaurant became silent and eerily calm. I debated if I wanted to go out there but the people who caused all the commotion might still be out there. "Where the fuck is she!" I heard a man yell as he walked closer to the bathroom. I instantly climbed onto the toilet and crouched as low as i could so if they were to come inside they wouldn't be able to see me. "If Andy's here then that bitch of his has to be here too." My heart started to race when I realized that they were talking about my husband. At least I think they were talking about my husband. There were plenty of men around the LA area that could have the same name as him. "Well i-" A single gunshot silenced the man before he could finish his sentence. Tears were flooding down my cheeks as I collapsed onto the seat. I was shaking so bad at this point that I wouldn't be surprised if I was making the ground shake below me. Never in all my 22 years on this Earth had I been in this type of situation. I've never even held a gun before and now I was one step closer to be shot by a total stranger. "Sophia!" My head snapped up at the sound of my name being yelled. "Sophia!" The man yelled again before the sound of doors started banging open and then slamming shut. "Sophia Noel!" The bathroom door barged open next and between the cracks in the stalls I saw Andy frantically checking the room. I didn't waste any time in throwing open the door and flinging myself onto his body. He wrapped his arms tightly around my neck as I cried into his. "Oh baby, I am so sorry." He whispered in my hair as he tried his best to get me to calm down. "I am so sorry."
I held on as tight as I could before he pulled back and placed his hands on the side of my face. It was at that moment that I saw not only was he covered in someone's blood but that blood had also smeared on me as well. Before I could speak, he placed a finger on my lips. "Sophia, I need you to listen to what i'm about to tell you." It was at that moment that I realized that what had just happened in the dining room and what was happening in the streets of Los Angeles was not some random act of violence. No, all those things that were happening out in the community were because of my husband and the "business" he was apart of.
