Blood Queen

(Iris P.O.V.)

Brisk winds send goosebumps along my arms on the walk home. Andy insisted on accompanying me. And it’s a good thing too because after blacking out on the trip to his place, I have absolutely no idea where we are.

“So.” I say in a teasing voice. “How does this whole vampire thing work? Are you afraid of garlic and all that?” A pause. “Wait, you don’t sparkle do you?” He looks caught somewhere between amusement and annoyance.

“No.” He replies flatly, and I laugh. For once the stories are right, having someone to tease is fun.

“Ok ok, I’m sorry. But really, how does it work?” I persist, still kind of smiling.

“I don’t really know where to start.”

“Try the beginning.” His smirk widens again and I think he’s remembering when I said that before. Still, he elbows me lightly in retribution.

“Alright I will try the beginning, but you asked for it.” He clears his throat, then continues speaking in a terrible imitation of what I can only assume is supposed to be some ancient history teacher. “As far as we can tell, vampirism started shortly after the viking invasions in medieval Europe with a man named Vlad Tepes, the adopted son of Lilitu and Esrite Revnant. He’s commonly known as Vlad the Impaler, or Dracula, adopted from the word dragon. His name was originally given to him because of the cruel ways in which he killed and because he liked to drink the blood of his enemies. Dracula murdered because of his Christian beliefs, which is why vampires lose their power around holy objects. No one really knows for sure how he became a vampire, some people believe that he was cursed and some believe that he sold his soul in exchange for immortality. However,we do know that he was killed about two thousand years ago by the family that ruled before yours.” He drops the croaky old man voice and continues his explanation.

“Many people argue that it must have been a curse because of something we call “blood madness.” If a vampire doesn’t drink blood for long enough, then they lose the ability to control themselves. They will attack and kill everyone around them until the madness subsides. A lot of new vampires get it and accidentally kill their mortal families when they don’t understand our curse or are in denial about what they’ve become, usually because they believe that in order to be a vampire they have to be dead. But vampires aren’t technically dead, the window of things that can kill them just becomes much smaller. It’s pretty much limited to cursed stakes, large quantities of holy water, or being physically held away from blood for several years. Does that cover it?”

“Some free advice: don’t become a teacher. You suck at explaining things.”

Hello my fellow fanfiction enthusiasts! Ok, that was a little lame, I admit. :) I'm really sorry for the delay in updates, I promise that I have not (and will not) give up on this story. Currently I've had no time even to sleep, much less write. :( Updates may be fairly sporadic until summer, but I will try my best to write as much as possible, hopefully some longer chapters too. :) Question of the day: What is the most awkward situation you've been in? (mine is a long list, but I'll share one in the comments for every answer. :) )
