Survival or Struggle?
Ashley's Fight
Holy cheese and pretzels! I finally have the brain power to actually write a chapter. :)
I've decided to this chapter all in Ashley's POV. Because, let's face it, this guy deserves a chapter all to himself for everything that's happened to him. :) And I hope everyone can forgive me for not 'waking him up' earlier. It was a snap decision and I thought it would work better with the story.
So, without further ado; let's get on with the story! Enjoy! :)
*Ashley’s POV*
The first thing I remember is...not really remembering anything. I tried to get a feel of my surroundings, but without being able to open my eyes, I didn't know what to expect. And with the zombies crawling around, my sight was something I need to have. The thought of zombies made my eyes fly open, only to be met with a bright light that made my eyes sting and burn. And hurriedly looked away, almost groaning. My head hurt, so I resolved to only move my head in small movements. I was in a room, that much was clear, but couldn't really tell what kind of room, seeing as I had to have my eyes adjust first. Besides the obvious tell of not knowing where I was, I didn't know where the guys were either.
Were they all right? Were they alive? Were any of them hurt? How was CC faring? I tried calling out to the guys, but my throat felt like it hadn't been used in some time. It hurt, and all I managed was a small croak anyways before coughing. I needed water, and badly. Trying my hand at trying to sit up and move, I was shocked to find out I was held down. What the hell? As my eyes began to adjust more, I found I was strapped to some sort of table with all sorts of dark stains on it. I tried not to dwell on what those stains could be. I didn't need or want to think where I was or why I was being held down. The place looked familiar, but my memory needed to catch up to me, so I couldn't place it quite yet.
"Ah, Ashley, how lovely to see you awake." a familiar voice said.
The bright light of whatever was hitting me was providing a difficulty of seeing who it was. Hearing footsteps and a chuckle, the light was moved away from my eyes. I blinked and let my eyes adjust. Staring down at me was a doctor and an associate of his. Had they been watching me this whole time? And how long were they watching me for? And hold on...how did this man know my name? I'm pretty sure I've never spoken to this man or have even seen him. The doctor must have noticed my confused expression while I was thinking this and smiled. I shiver ran down my spine at that smile. I'm pretty sure, it the universe allowed it, the malevolence would just ooze out of his skin like the slime-ball that I think of him to be.
"Oh Ashley! You don't remember me? We've met before. But I'm pretty sure one of your friends already knows me quite well." the man said, chuckling darkly.
Wait a damned minute....CC! This was the doctor that had taken CC and had done god-knows-what to him! I struggled against the restraints and the doctor laughed, seemingly amused.
"To be fair to you, seeing as CC isn't here to speak of it. I'm Doctor Vossler Crane. It's real nice to have you drop by like this." Vossler said smiling malevolently.
What did this man think this was? A social visit?! Because I sure as hell didn't come here willingly. And I'm pretty sure I was never awake to be given that choice anyways.
"Screw...you." I managed to croak out.
"Oh Ashley, don't be like that." Vossler said, walking forward and moving some hair out of my face. And I would have found it endearing, if the man wasn't so damn creepy.
"Be a little more civil please." Vossler said, almost like he was talking to a child.
But I wasn't a child, and he knew that. Or maybe he was messed up enough to think he could make me act like one. So I wrenched my head away from his hand, as much as I could. And to make sure he knew I despised him, I spit in his face.
"Screw you!" I repeated, a lot louder this time. It hurt, but it felt good to say at the same time.
The doctor's face went from smiling evilly to downright glaring at me. He wrenched my head back by my hair. And let me tell you, it hurt like hell. I clenched my teeth because one: my head still hurt. And two: because I didn't want to give this doctor any satisfaction of any pain I might be in.
"I was going to be nice, but it seems you're going to make this harder on yourself." Vossler growled in my ear.
Nice? That was him being nice? I didn't believe his 'niceness' for a minute. This guy just oozed evil, so nothing would convince me that he would be nice to anyone. Vossler ripped his hand from my hair and moved the light back into my face. He heard Vossler talking to someone and it sounded female. But he couldn't be sure, seeing as he couldn't see now. It had to be another associate of his, because the one that came with him, was staying near my bed, preparing something.
"The two of you, prep him. I'll be back shortly." I heard Vossler say.
I heard the door slam shut and heard the lock click. Great, now knowing that they're probably going to lock me in here so I can't possibly escape made it harder to face the fact that I might never see the guys again. One person came forward with a syringe filled with something. He other brought surgeon's tools to the other side of me. Looking at them, I remembered how CC looked when we found him. And a vowed that I wouldn't let them do the same things to me. So when one person came forward with the syringe in one hand and holding me down by the neck with another, I bit the person. The person's shriek was female, her hand and the syringe shrinking away in pain. I heard a curse, a male's this time, next to the tools he was preparing.
So I knew one male and one female were in this room. Didn't do much for me, seeing as I was restrained. The male hit me across the face, making one side of my head slam into the table. I forced down a groan, my head spinning. And before I could muster up a chance to cause any possible damage to the male aggressor, the female associate plunged the syringe into my neck. My vision got fuzzy almost instantly. I could hear the woman swear right next to me as I passed out. I still tried to struggle, up until the very moment my vision went completely black.
**********************************************************************************************
I woke up slowly at first, then the pain hit. It was like I had been hit by a train. My eyes sprung open quickly. I tried to turn my head, but it felt weighed down. The bright light was still in my face, but I still worked around the bright light and pain to try and look around. I wanted to see what they did to me. I felt what could be blood running down the side of my face. I think blood was on my collarbone too, and not from the supposed head wound either. I didn't want think what they did to me. I had to plan something so I can get out of here. And get back to the others. Trouble was, where were the guys? I was unconscious when they probably made to a safe area.
That frustrated me, but I needed to think. So I pushed my frustration away and started to think. But before I could start to even think of a plan, the door opened. I quickly shut my eyes, acting like I was still unconscious. It seemed to work, because whoever was there began walking away from him and began to fiddle with something. The door opened again and two people began talking. The two associates of Vossler were back in the room.
"Pennie, he's still unconscious. Can you go get the keys to unlock his restraints?" the man asked.
"Why do you want to take off the restraints Draven?" Pennie asked.
"Because that's what Vossler wanted. I'm not sure why. Probably because he's not a threat at the moment. Just do it all right?" Draven asked harshly.
"All right Graves, all right. No need to be such an ass." Pennie said coldly.
I could hear jingling and footsteps and remained as still as I could. I could feel rather than hear her unlock my restraints. It actually felt nice to finally be able to move. But I didn't move, not quite yet. As Pennie unlocked my last restraint was when I moved. I shoved Pennie into a wall, I wasn't going to harm a woman. So I tried to do as less damage to her as possible. I flung myself off the table, stumbling a little at getting up a little too quickly. But I managed to grab something and hit Draven hard enough to knock him out cold. I almost rushed out of the before I had an idea: the keys.
I flew back around and swiped the keys from a stunned Pennie's hands and rushed back out. It took a little bit to find the right key and locked them inside. Now it was time to find my way out. But this place was a maze before, and with unknown injuries, I wasn't sure how long it would take to get out. I just started running down the hallway without thinking. I needed to try and remember how we got out last time. I think it was a window, but there were so many. And the majority were boarded up. I didn't think I would have the strength to pull off the boards this time around. I must have ran down about eight different hallways before coming to a stop to catch my breath. Blood dripped onto the floor, and for the first time, I examined my injuries.
I felt my forehead, coming away with blood on my head. Head wound, check. I looked down at my collarbone, that also was bleeding. But there was also so much blood covering the wound that I had a hard time trying to figure out how bad it was. My hands were a mess. Did I struggle even when I was unconscious? Hard to know, but if I did, then they had a hell of a time trying to get to do whatever they wanted. My head wound on the back of my head throbbed, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. There were bruises on my neck as well. If I did indeed struggle, Draven or Pennie must have held me down by the neck. No wonder I felt like I had been hit by a train. After I looked myself over, I looked over at the weapon I blindly picked up to defend myself.
A piece of lead pipe, about as long as half my arm. And it was thick too, so no wonder Draven went down like a stone. I was startled out of observations by a noise. The loud speaker, and it seemed to sound worse than the last time it was used. I started to move, not wanting to be standing still when hearing this insane man speak. His voice came in clear as a bell, well, apart from the static and feedback before it cleared up.
"Ah, Ashley, you managed to get away from Mr. Grave and Mrs. Everbleed. You were a lot more cunning than I gave you credit for. But you won't be free for long. You may have the keys, but I'll be getting them out one way or another. And we'll find you, and this time, you won't get away." Vossler said manically. He laughed sadistically before the loud speaker cut off.
"Crazy bastard." I muttered, speeding up his pace.
I didn't want them catching him again. I knew that Vossler would make good on his promise. So I began running again, not stopping this time. Upon rushing around, I did spot a messenger bag, some still useful medical supplies(bandages, a needle and thread, antiseptic), and a pair of machetes(which I secured around my waist). I wasn't sure why or how these machetes were in here in the first place. But I was thankful for them. I still kept the lead pipe though. It was far better to knock someone out than to stay and try to kill them. Especially in my state. I was surprised I could even aim, let alone hit someone. And let's face it, hitting Draven was a lucky hit. Next time, I won't be so lucky.
As I hurried down more hallways, the loud speaker would go off now and again. It would give me hints, taunting me as to what they were doing. He said these in the following order:
"I'm helping my associates out. Better hurry, little rabbit."
"I've gotten them out and we're searching for you. Better hide while you can, little one."
"We've each taken a floor, you don't stand a chance pipsqueak."
"We're coming for you little man, come on out and save yourself the trouble."
(And my personal favorite...)
"Oooooh, you left us a trail of bread crumbs to follow. Your own blood will be your downfall, my little hellion."
They all creeped me out, and seriously, what was them him and my height?! Little rabbit? Little one? Pipsqueak?! This man talked as if I were a child, and taunted to me almost like a child predator would. And that just creeped me out even more. Seriously, who talks like that?! I ran down a few more hallways, going down a few more flights of stairs. When I stopped to catch my breath again(damn blood loss!), the hallway, for some reason, looked familiar. As I looked around and saw the giant hole in the wall, it clicked. This it where one of those monsters fell to its death. Which mean, I was still a long ways up. And elevators weren't exactly trusted in this place.
So I started my trek down more hallways. It seemed the entire freaking building was a maze. It took me down at least eight or nine hallways before I was actually able to encounter stairs. Or it at least felt like it. But I was giving up, not one bit. I stopped at one point to fix myself up. Once bandaged up(I didn't bother sewing myself up because I didn't have the time), I started walking again. Now that there was no blood trail(or bread crumbs in Vossler's case), I could probably escape a lot more easily. The loud speaker came on again, this time Vossler didn't seem amused as before.
"You're making this harder on all of us. Stop running around and let us catch you, little bunny." Vossler said before the loud speaker went quiet again.
"Stop calling me little." I muttered as I continued on.
For some reason, I didn't encounter did monsters. Not as of yet anyways, I wonder was that is. Not that I was complaining anyways. Three people after me to do god-knows-what to me, was enough for one day. I managed to get down to, what looked to be, about the fourth floor. I could see the ground clearly now than when I last could. The loudspeaker came on for one last time, and for good reason.
"Well, this is harder than I thought it would be. But my associates and I have found a shortcut. See you real soon my little friend." Vossler said, chuckling before it went quiet again.
It was then I heard footsteps. How did they find a shortcut down here?! I should have been miles away from them! I couldn't think about that, I just needed my own shortcut, and fast. Mostly every window was boarded up. The only reason I could see was because of the flickering lights. It was enough to see which was the easiest to mess with. Time was short, I had to chose one. I chose one with rotted out boards and started whacking away at them. It created a lot of noise, but the footsteps were getting closer. So what was the point in being quiet now. When I was almost done, Vossler's voice rang out. But it wasn't on the loudspeaker. Shit...
"Ah, our little rebel, finally decided to stop running, yes? Come quietly." Vossler said darkly.
"Never!" I shouted at him in the semi-darkness.
I heard him laugh again and saw him advancing slowly through the flickering lights. I heard footsteps coming from the other side of me and hit whoever came at me as hard as I could. The grunt was male: Draven.
"Oh come now, don't play hard to get." Vossler said, getting closer. Looking at him with narrowed eyes, I tried to see if Pennie was with him. She wasn't, shit again.
"We both know we could do this the easy way or the hard way." Vossler said with a sinister note in his tone.
I managed to knock another board off of the window as he advanced. Vossler just laughed and laughed. I was kind of getting tired of him laughing at me to be honest. I was in pain, so my patience level wasn't all that great with this man. I wanted to beat the hell out of this man for doing what he did to CC and now me. I heard a clacking sound behind me. Heels? I whipped out the pipe and struck out blindly, not seeing where she was. I heard a gasp and a clatter, then something rolled at my feet, which I crushed under my boots. It was probably whatever sedated me the first time.
I heard Vossler's footsteps come within inches of me and a swung as hard as my tired arms would allow. The pained grunt was the first good thing to come out of the man's mouth. I hit him a few more times, before Pennie tried to intervene. She tried wrapping her arms around my arms. All I did was back her up into a wall to stun her and lock her in a storage closet with the keys I kept with me. I turned just in time to barely sidestep a punch and hit him with the lead pipe again. And again. And again. I was out of breath after a few good hits. And if the sounds were saying something, Vossler had a time trying to get up.
I looked out the window I had gotten mostly free of boards. The only way to survive that fall was to drop myself on the abandoned car below. The only abandoned car under that window. So that's what I had to do, and I steeled my resolve up to do it. I heard Vossler grunt and then a thud. Him trying to get up and failing again.
"You think you'll get out alive?" Vossler asked, still having a snide tone in his voice.
I walked over and hammered one last hit, right where I hoped his jaw was and spat at him.
"Hell-fucking-yes." I said, before going to the window and jumping out.
I landed, not so gently I might add, on the car. I all but slid off of it, but got to my feet moments later. I looked up at the place where I jumped and spat at the building before running in the direction I hoped was safety, and the others. I just hope they weren't out there looking for me.
"I'm coming guys. Just stay put. I'm coming." I said.
I've decided to this chapter all in Ashley's POV.
