Survival or Struggle?

From One Threat to Another

The guys stood frozen, sans Ashley(who was still unconscious), and Jinxx, who had yet to attempt to get himself off the ground. But Jake and Andy looked at CC with surprise, shock, and a little bit of horror. Obviously claws weren't of the human variety, unless he was secretly a Wolverine impersonator. Obviously it wasn't time for jokes, so both of them shook themselves out of their shocked state, CC was staring at them, eyes black from his usual brown. He looked, dare they say...like a predator. Because that's what he looked like. Until CC's sharp expression softened, looking worried and concerned for the two still standing. It was such a swift change in demeanor, that Andy almost fell back a couple of steps to reengage himself back into reality.

"Are you guys okay?!" CC asked them, fully turning to them. Jake remembered actually breathe, and let out a long breath he hadn't realized he had been holding.

"Yeah, we're fine. But Ashley and Jinxx seem to need help." Jake said. He pointed towards Ashley while Andy was looking towards Jinxx, who was muttering a few choice curse words under his breath. Normally it would be considered funny. But considering their situation, they'd laugh about it later. CC nodded silently and went towards Ashley, who was nearest him. Andy got Jinxx, helping him up.

"Nice of you to help me." Jinxx said sarcastically as Andy gave him a hand up.

"Oh piss off Jinxx, Ashley came around to save you, didn't he?" Andy said, motioning towards an unconscious Ashley, whom was being laid on the couch by CC. A worried Jinxx said nothing and made his way over to Ashley.

"His head?" Jinxx asked.

CC nodded, his hand coming away red and CC sucked in a breath. Andy and Jake got in between Ashley and CC, while Jinxx surveyed the situation at hand calmly. Jinxx threw a piece of cloth discarded on the floor to CC, who hastily wiped his bloodied hand free of Ashley's blood. He seemed almost in tears while doing so, which only made everyone else confused. They didn't have time to question any further, as the noises of things breaking in started up again. They would have to pick up what they could and find a way out safely.

Thing was, everything on the first floor was boarded up. The second floor seemed to have just begun on being boarded when the original owner had been attacked, killed, or turned. But the first floor was easier to get out of, and no one wanted to risk a second story jump to the ground. CC might make it, if his new physique was anything to go by. But the rest of them wouldn't. So they got all of their weapons ready, and waited. And it didn't take long, the zombies came down four at a time. And if their aim was bad out in the open, it was worse in close quarters. But CC seemed to take up the mantle of getting rid of any threat that got anywhere near them, Ashley especially.

Just wait, kill, reload, and repeat. This happened about four to five times before there was a lull long enough for at least two of the four to start dislodging the boards. Jake and CC were the ones to do it, while Andy and Jinxx took to making sure Ashley was safe from harm. But the lulls were never long enough. The boards had all but screwed into the door they wanted to get out of. The door would have been barricaded once they had actually entered the home by themselves earlier. Now they wished they hadn't, it would have been an easier escape route. But the painstakingly took their time, what little they had, and unbarricaded the door.

Now it was a challenge to get out without putting anything down, or having an friendly fire mishaps if the lull ended. They would have to go out one by one, if they had to. CC ended up getting Ashley in his arms already, regardless of how the blood made him react before. They had to trust CC wouldn't do anything to Ashley while they were getting out themselves. Once the last board was ripped off the door, Jinxx opened it, gun drawn upon it slamming open. They motioned for CC to go, and CC had to angle Ashley somewhat to get out of the doorway, which is what they were trying to avoid. The lull ended, and the other three let bullets fly as zombies appeared around them. CC wasn't here, so they had to be careful how to aim and where they were standing.

A couple of times, Jake had to jump out of the way of a lunging zombie, shooting it in the head moments later. Andy grimaced, he would never get used to the sight or smell of around and gore surrounding him. Jinxx went next, by Jake's urges. That left Andy and Jake, now, if they do much as took a step towards the door, the zombies seemed to come out of nowhere. But this horde made both or their eyes widen and the both bolted for the door, sprinting out of there, weapons in hand.

"Run!" Andy screamed out as the horde came rushing out the door at them.

Some of the zombies got stuck in the doorway from rushing at them all at once. But most got out and started their sprinting after them. They realized two things at that point: shooting while running and looking behind you was more difficult than movies and video games portrayed. And second: lugging around weapons wasn't all light weight either. Just running with something that carried a lot of ammo or weight made running a little bit harder. And their aim suffered for it. CC couldn't help, having to carry an unconscious Ashley and running wasn't easy either. CC wasn't a miracle worker after all.

They managed to dispatch the ones running after them in time. The ones that had gotten stuck, had lost interest now that they were too far away to be seen by this point. They slowed down to a fast walk, checking around them to make sure they were okay to catch their breathes. They were all breathing heavily, sans CC and a still unconscious Ashley. Blood could be seen on CC's arm, it looked dry, but CC still seemed to have that terrified look on his face whenever he looked down at it. What was that about anyways? Jinxx was about to ask that very question, when CC's terrified look turned into an 'if-looks-could-kill' glare. The other three looked off in that direction and stopped just short of an alleyway, turning down it, looking to make sure it was completely safe before actual turning to see the problem at hand.

Zombies, and they were by the hundred out there. There was no way they would be able to kill all of them. Even CC might have his limits, and they had Ashley to worry about. They crept further into the alleyway, terrified. They needed to stay hidden, until they could come up with a plan. But a plan with that many zombies around almost seemed impossible.

"What do we do? We can't just stay here." Jinxx said softly.

"Yeah, some of those things are bound to pass by here. We'd be sitting ducks." Jake said softly, nodding. It was silent for a few moments, then...

"We could steal a car." CC said, his voice barely above a whisper. But they heard it, and looked at him as if he were insane.

"What? Got any better ideas?!" CC asked, a little miffed at the looks he was given. They all accepted that, no, they didn't have any other plans.

"Okay then, how do you suppose we do it? Those things will be alerted to the first thing that comes within hearing distance." Andy asked.

He looked out slightly from their hiding place at the zombies milling around the properties beyond. He swore he could see a few kids among the older ones. It made him shudder, thinking of what the kids must have been thinking, before they became one of those things. He got closer to the others, so as not to shout if they hadn't heard him correctly.

"One of you takes Ashley, and I go. I'm a lot more stealthier than you guys now." CC whispered.

He had a point, which made the others make a note to ask CC a few questions upon getting to safety, well, a safer place anyways. Jake, Jinxx and Andy nodded, and CC handed Ashley to Jake, who got one arm around his shoulders, while Jinxx did the same with the other arm. This seemed familiar, a similar act at the hospital. It made them both shudder thinking about it. Before they knew it, CC had silently made his way out of the alleyway, and towards the first car he could reach. A Saturn...well, better that than a clunker that made too much noise. They would have to make a run for it once CC hot-wired the damn thing. The car revved and started, they could hear the zombies become aware. The moment of truth...

"One....Two...THREE!" Jake screamed as they went first.

Andy went last, shooting at any zombie that came too close to the pair handling Ashley.
It felt like it took forever, seeing as they had to have CC manually unlock the freaking back doors to get Ashley, and then Jake and Jinxx into the car. All the while, Andy was battering and shooting for his life, shoving himself right against the car to give himself as much room as he could manage. Once Ashley was seated and Jake and Jinxx positioned themselves, as well as Ashley, comfortably; Andy all but dived into the front passenger seat, slamming the door just in time.

"Floor it!" Andy shouted, horrified at the number of zombies trying to batter the car enough to try and get to them.

CC put the car in reverse and floored it backwards. He then put it into drive and mowed down as many zombies as he could. Blood and gore splattered the windshield instantly, CC flicking on the spray in order to see. They then made the literal bloody journey out of the suburbs, hitting a curb on the way out to avoid another horde coming at them. Once a good distance away, CC slowed down, breathing a quiet sigh of relief. No one said anything, just intent to ingest all of what had happened in a short span of time. The silence was broke by a simple request by Jinxx

"Now CC, mind telling us what's up with you?" He asked.

Notes

And there you have it folks, another terrifying chapter. :)
I hope you're all enjoying the story so far, because there's so much more to come!
And holy cheese and pretzels, over 6 THOUSAND views, I've never had that on a story of mine before. Thank you guys so much. :)

Anyways, I know I keep on saying this(and I probably will), but I am sorry for the long wait between chapters. It takes a little bit of time to come up with what's going to happen; and work obviously doesn't help me all that much. But I'm glad you're all sticking around, even if the wait is long. :P

I keep picking on poor Ashley. I'm not sure why, it just came out like that. Sorry! :(

Anyways, why do you guys think CC had such a reaction to Ashley's blood, huh?
I'd love to hear your theories. :)

Also, here's the a general picture of what the car looks like:

It's the suburbs, so I needed the car to look somewhat nice, you know? :)

And as always guys, I hope you enjoy this latest chapter! :)
Subscribe, comment, critique, all that good stuff. :)

I will see you all later. :)

Enjoy,
