Survival or Struggle?

Rats In a Maze

CC looked at Jinxx, a mixture of frustration and exhaustion on his face. Like he didn't have time to answer that question. And in reality, they didn't. But the rest of the group probably would rest a little easier in knowing what was wrong with their friend. The behavior he had displayed a few times before concerned them. It wasn't like CC to do anything remotely in anger or malice. At this point, they were all still in the room with the pieces of the door strewn everywhere. No noise was heard...yet. None of the guys were holding their breath for any sort of reprieve. And Jinxx still stood where he was, looking at CC in concern, waiting for an answer.

"I'm not going to answer that." he mumbled, scowling. He tried to move away, but a scoff stopped him.

"Bullshit." Was all Jinxx said, his patience seemed to be wearing thin.

But everything was in this place. Everyone felt like their sanity was no longer there. They just needed to get out of this place and lay low. Well, as low as possible with a zombie apocalypse. CC just huffed a sigh and continued forward, Jinxx shook his head and followed, while the others followed behind him. The lights still were flickering, giving off a strobe light-like feel to the area they were walking around in. And it made it hard to focus on where they were going. CC didn't seem to perturbed, but he continued walking through the halls. There were a few moans here and there, but so far, nothing too bad. The flickering lights also made it impossible to tell which way they were heading, or already did go. Which made it feel like they were walking in circles...in fact...

"Didn't we just walk past this room? I felt like we had a few minutes ago." Jake muttered, pointing on the room. The others looked but said nothing, they kept going. They managed to make it into a hallway they didn't get to before. And then everything just became confusing.

"Okay, either the flickering lights are messing with my eye sight, or we're constantly going in circles." Ashley said.

"Didn't I just say that?" Jake asked Ashley, a little perturbed.

"Yeah, no need to be an ass." Ashley retorted back.

"You want me to be one. I can be one, don't worry." Jake said, scowling at Ashley.

Ashley was about to say something when Andy, who had been hearing their starting argument, grabbed Ashley and hauled him to the other side of where he was. He scowled at the two as he kept walking, shaking his head.

"Now is not the time to argue. We can fight when we get out of this hellhole. If we can.." Andy said quietly, uttering the last part softly. But he knew for a fact that the others heard it.

CC and Jinxx were the only ones who hadn't said anything, apart from when before they started to actively started moving. But Andy saw that CC was just as frustrated by the lights as the rest of them were. Ashley and Jake, thankfully, stayed silent, though it was a bit of a frustrated silence on their part. They were feeling they were going insane in this place. Andy couldn't blame them for that. Suddenly, a sudden noise and a curse had Ashley, Jake, and Andy jumping in surprise. CC apparently had enough with the lights doing their best to keep them here and shattered a main lighting fixture above him...with his bare hands.

Andy could hardly believe and rushed along with Jake and Ashley rushing ahead of him in his shocked reverie. Once there, Jinxx had a scowl on his face and shaking his head as he was muttering something, trying to use his shirt he had been wearing as a bandage. No one was down to going to look for medical supplies at the moment. CC jerked out of Jinxx's grip when he reached for the injured hand. Jinxx swore again, throwing his hands up in frustration.

"I'm trying to help you!" Jinxx shouted at him. Before Ashley could tell him to quiet down, CC had shouted back.

"Well don't! I don't want help!" CC shouted back.

"Why not?" Jake said, intersecting the sudden shouting match.

"Because--" CC said, trailing off, going a sudden of sickly grey. "I don't...feel so good.." CC said, before he body went towards the floor.

"I gotcha buddy. I gotcha." Jinxx said, catching him easily. He looked at the others, concerned and confused all at once.

"What's wrong with CC?" Ashley asked, concerned.

No one answered, and no one expected one. There was no clear cut answer, because CC never gave them one. Jinxx checked CC's pulse and sighed with relief, CC had passed out, but it still scared the hell out of all of them. Jinxx had Jake help him get CC off the ground, arms around over each of their shoulders. So Andy and Ashley lead the way. They were able to be able to move around without all the strobe light-like in their eyes. Yes, they were in the dark, but their eyes adjusted enough to where they could move around. They managed to get to the last corridor on the first floor(don't ask how). They thought had somewhere they could get out. And it did: a window. A boarded up window.

They all looked at each other and Andy sighed.

"Let's get these boards off." Andy said. The others looked at him, shocked. Andy rose his brows at them.

"What? It's the only way we got. And I don't know about you, but I'm not looking around in the dark for an actual door to get out of." he retorted quietly.

The others nodded and sighed. Jinxx and Jake put CC gently down onto the floor as they went over to help. They found a crowbar and a hammer not far from them. From the looks of things, the people who barricaded the windows had dropped these items to board things up or defend themselves and fled. They probably didn't make it very far. They tried not making too much noise at the start. but breaking down boards when the nails wouldn't come off wasn't a quiet ordeal. They had to deal with whatever came their way. And that was a horde of zombies. Jake heard them first, having to take a small shovel and hammer at the boards.

"You guys hear that?" Jake asked, stopping suddenly.

The others were about to say no, but a moan was heard. Not very loud, but it sounded like it was coming towards them. They didn't have time to deal with zombies. They needed to get out of this hellhole. They broke off the last remaining boards, hearing a lot more noise and clamor now that the noises they made had been heard by them. Thankfully, the window didn't have any glass on it, probably because of their the undead hammering at it from the outside, or humans had broke the glass and hopped out into the chaos. Either way, it was safe enough.

Jinxx went through first, then CC(whom Jinxx made sure to gently drop him down to the ground). Ashley heard the zombies getting closer and literally leaped out the window without a second thought, a crowbar still in his hands. Andy went next, tossing the hammer to the ground as he did so. Jake was first and by his screams as he leaped out, it was a close call. And as Jinxx and Jake hurriedly picked CC up, they saw how close they were to being...food. About a dozen zombies or more tried getting through the window, having no luck because they were all smashed together in one heap to try and get at them.

They ran, Jinxx and Jake a little slowly because of CC. They ran down the abandoned and dangerous streets, Andy and Ashley hacking away at zombies as they went. They managed to get to a barbed wire fence and curse. They looked behind them, the dead running at them. Andy went up and hacked at a strip of barbed wire on the top of the fence long enough for them to actually get over the fence without cutting themselves up badly. So Andy was first, dropping onto the other side of the fence safely. Next was Ashley. Jake, Jinxx, and an unconscious and sickly looking CC were debating how to get CC over the fence. There was no way they could take him under it. Digging required time, of which they didn't have.

Ashley climbed back to the top of the fence, looking at the undead as he did this. He motioned for CC and they hoisted him up as much as they could. Andy, catching onto the idea, grabbed a ladder and was able to help with CC and helped hold onto CC until Ashley was at a good enough position to get CC to the ground. Once that was done, Jake and Jinxx climbed over with mere seconds to spare. The dead bounced off of the fence once Jake actually got over it and it sent him flying a feet feet, stunned slightly, but unharmed. They grabbed CC once more, looked at each other and ran into the nearest shelter. Which happened to be a house in a suburban area. They ran into one of the houses, barricading the door and searched through the house, finding no zombies.

After the search, they slumped to the floor in what appeared to be a disarrayed living room and listened. Silence took over, no sound, no movement, just silence. They looked at each other, each in a slumped and worn out position near each other. Their tensed bodies relaxed in relief. Never had they had a chance to rest in something that was considered safe. At least for now. They were finally out of that hospital, and somewhere where they could rest their heads for a bit. But all anyone could say after this was:

"Holy shit."

Notes

Oh cheese and pretzels! I am so incredibly sorry. Since it's the summer, work has asked me for more hours. And it just killed my muse. But not to worry, this chapter was a bit longer than the others. I hope it's a suitable apology. :)

But again, I am so incredibly sorry. I looked at how long ago was the last update and it was two months ago! I never let a story wait for that long. So I hope you guys enjoy this chapter. :)

Leave your comments, critiques, ideas, and so forth if you so wish. And I'll see you soon. :)

Apologies and tons of love,
