Kissing the Concrete

Chapter 23: Badass Fire Roses

"Hands up! Drop the weapon and don't move!"

My head turned around. The police entered the room, pointing a gun towards the men and all the intruders immediately turned towards the door. The man with the gun dropped his weapon and it hit the floor with a bang. Each one of the men where escorted out by the police and I completely zoned out. One moment I was in complete fright, lying underneath the bed in Andy's embrace, the next one...

Andy. I had totally forgotten about Andy. What happened to Andy? The gunshot. Was he alive?

"Iris..."

I turned around to see Andy sitting on the floor. His left hand was placed over his right shoulder, completely covered in blood.

"ANDY!" I screamed. "Oh my god, Andy!"

I gently lifted his hand, noticing the circular flesh wound right underneath his collarbone.

"It's just a bullet wound. I'll be fine. Just get help, please?"

I nodded, reached for my phone that was still lying underneath the bed and called 911 for the second time that night.

"9-1-1, what's your emergency?"

I told the operator the story about what had happened, gave her the adress and followed her instructions on what to do while we were waiting. Keeping calm was one of the instructions I got, which was nearly impossible. After trying my best to help out, I heard the ambulance outside. I gave Andy a tight hug, his blood staining my t-shirt. I didn't care.

"I love you so much Iris."

"Please don't die, Andy. Just please don't die."

"I'll be fine. Trust me, for once, on this. I won't die. I refuse to."

I smiled, trying my best not to cry too much while the ambulance took him to the hospital.

"Don't leave me alone, Iris. I need you!"

"I'll be right behind you, I'll take the car and I'll be with you as soon as you reach the hospital."

It hurt me to not be able to be with him all the time, but I had to. I wasn't allowed in the ambulance, therefore I was instead taking the car, following the ambulance all the way go the hospital.

Should I buy him red roses or white lilies?

The scenario was ridiculous. I was standing in a gift shop and contemplating what type of flowers I should buy my wounded...? I didn't even know what I and Andy were. Dating? Friends? Boyfriend/girlfriend? It didn't matter.

I found a bouquet of yellow roses that had red stains at the bottom of the petals. The beautiful ombre effect reminded me of fire, they were some badass roses. If there were any roses that Andy would like, it would be these roses. I payed for them and went straight to the room where Andy was resting. It was a late saturday morning and he had just woken up from emergency surgery. Afraid that he would still be completely lost, I greeted him with a gentle "hi".

He sat up, seemingly tired but happy to see me, cupped my cheeks and kissed my lips gently.

"Hello Iris." He said after letting go. Noticing the bouquet, he exclaimed "Wow, those are some badass roses."

"I thought so as well. Fire roses, you know."

"Fire roses." He smiled. "You shouldn't be the one bringing me roses Iris. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be alive right now. I should be the one buying you roses, like a true gentleman."

"What? So because I am a woman, I can't buy you roses? Even if they are badass fire roses?" I said, jokingly.

"That is not what I meant!" He said. "I love that you bought me roses, especially badass fire roses. But you saved my life this morning. You shouldn't buying me things as if you owe me. I owe you for what you did."

I leaned in to kiss him, and he kissed me back. I guess this is what love feels like.

We got to leave the hospital the same afternoon, Andy still wearing a lot of bandage over his shoulder in order to prevent blood flow, even though the bullet wound was sewn together. I still hadn't been able to change and my t-shirt still had blood stains all over the left shoulder.

"How 'bout I take you for some pizza for lunch? It's not that fancy but it's tasty as hell and it's the least I can do to make up for everything."

"To make up for the badass fire roses?"

"That and the you saving my life part. It's kinda important. And I refuse to let you drive there."

"I refuse to let you drive! For all I know, you could still be drunk!"

"Am not!" He said, pretending to fall over. "Fine, you'll drive."

We got in the car and I started driving.

"Where are we going then?"

"This is why you should let me drive!"

After a bit of playful teasing and non-efficient directing from Andy, we reached a really cute pizza place, reminiscent of the fancier ones I imagine existing in Italy.

"Okay, before we get inside, promise me this isn't a date?"

"Why?"

"Because I wanted our first date to be somewhere special!"

"Hey, it is a really good pizza place! And who says we can't take the date somewhere else later on?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Hey, Iris, now this is a special place. It is the place for our first date."

"I love you Andy."

"I love you to death, Iris."

Notes

I wasn't gonna put up a chapter this early, but I was struck by eally bad insomnia tonight and couldn't sleep worth shit. On the other hand, I wasn't tired, so I was able to write this. I guess I'll be uber-tired tomorrow instead, it's like 5 a.m.

Oh yeah, I actually had to flip a coin on this one, because I had two alternative ways of start this chapter: either a complete miss by the gunsling and shattring or this one. I think this one was more interesting. Wasn't too satisfied with the ending of this one, but hopefully I'll have better ideas soon.
