The Wild Ones

chapter 9

“You know Raven, you have a bad habit of waking up in here.” Sammi’s voice says. I open my bleary eyes, the bright lights making my headache that much worse.

“Yeah, well it seems I also have a bad habit of getting beat up.”

“Yeah.” Her smile disappears and her eyes narrow. “Who did this?” I don’t like the look in her eye, Sammi’s a bit of a wild card and the last thing I want is for her to go do something drastic.

“It’s nothing.” I tell her, trying to wave it off. “Just some harmless hazing.”

“Harmless?” Butts in Lauren, who I hadn’t noticed was in the corner. “You have a concussion! The Prophet found you unconscious on the floor!” Her loud voice sends pain shooting through my head and I wince, gripping fistfulls of my hair and waiting for it to pass. “I’m sorry.” She says in a hushed voice. “But you need to tell us who did this so we can make sure it never happens again.” I sigh. They’re going to drag the story out of me sooner or later, I may as well just tell them now and spare myself the trouble.

So I explain how the three girls from dinner cornered me. I tell them how they were jealous of the fact that I had spent so much time with The Prophet, and I explain why I didn’t fight back when they attacked me. When I am finished with my story there is a heavy silence for a few seconds while Lauren and Sammi exchange looks, then they both simultaneously stand up, and march out of the hospital wing. I barely have five minutes to worry about what they’re planning before the door swings open. Under the wooden frame stands the one person who I never expected to come. Andy. He makes absolutely no noise as he shuts the door and walks up to me. Suddenly a strong sense of despair hits me in the gut. He’s about to tell me to leave, I know it. I can’t go out there alone again, but what do they care? They don’t. My staying here obviously isn’t working, and god knows I’m completely useless to the legion. They probably only took me in out of pity. Sure, I know a thing or two about healing but I’m sure they have people here who are much better than I am. All I do is waste their precious resources and take up a bunk that could be used for someone who isn’t so worthless.

“The girls told me what happened.” Tears prick at my eyes and I nod at him. I’m fairly certain what he’s going to say next and I don’t think I could bear to hear the words spoken aloud so I just slide my legs off the bed and brace myself to be alone again.

“Where are you going?” He asks, surprised. I can’t look him in the eye for fear of crying, so instead I stare down at my lap.

“It’s okay; I know what you came to tell me. I understand why you wouldn’t want me staying here. I-I’ll just get my things and go.” I say softly, fighting back the tears that threaten to spill from my eyes.

“Raven, do you honestly think I’m going to kick you out?” He shakes his head in disbelief, making a bit of hope blossom in my chest.

“You’re not?” I breathe. Not quite daring to believe what I just heard.

“No. Of course not. You didn’t do anything wrong; But Sammi told me you didn’t even try to defend yourself. Is that true?” It’s almost impossible to meet his blue eyes. When I do it’s even more impossible to lie.

“Yes.” I admit. “I thought I’d be kicked out for sure if I got in a fight.” He looks at me strangely for a moment.

“Your membership with the legion in not on thin ice. We don’t favor the older members over you, you’re one of us Raven. I’m sorry that this ever happened, but I’ll make sure it never happens again.” I smile down at my hands as he turns to leave but as soon as he is out the door he sticks his head in again.

“Oh, and Raven…” I nod for him to continue. “Lauren also said you’d be fine by tomorrow afternoon, so I want you ready for the raid the next day.” He smirks at me, then he’s gone again, moving as silently as always.

Notes

I'm sorry this chapter has taken me so long to write, but the next one should be up much sooner. :) If you're looking for something to read in between chapters then you should check out my badly-titled story "Deathless Beauty" (I've always been fascinated by vampire folklore so I decided to write my own.)

I'm getting pretty excited about this story now that I know where I want it to go. I really hope that this story makes you as happy to read as it makes me to write it. :) Thanks for reading beautiful ;)

Oooh, good idea!

Glad to see you back ! It's been awhile since I've been in school , so I'm not sure what the consequences are for writing fanfics in class , but I've started carrying a notepad in my pocket at work to scribble down ideas on , and I've been actually writing on one of my stories during breaks . You gotta grab the ideas when they come , or they might escape . I hate when that happens .
