Walking Away from The Devil in the Mirror

The Verdict

Ashley's POV

Once we'd eventually reached the courthouse, everyone was about ready for this to be over. I went over to the prosecution lawyer.

"How is it looking?" I asked her.
"So far so good," she replied, “I know this judge well, he's a hard ass, he's unlikely to grant bail on such a serious crime as this." We were then taken through to the courtroom we found our seats and watched as Jacob was led into the dock. He looked over at us, he showed no remorse whatsoever. That made me hate him even more.
"All rise." said a male voice as we all stood for the judge to enter. He then gestured for us to sit down.
"Jacob," he started, "do you understand the severity of the crimes of which you have been charged?"
"I do Your Honour." he replied.
"You stand accused of kidnapping, second degree attempted battery and attempted murder," the judge read out, "we are here for a bail hearing, correct?" The defence attorney nodded.
"Yes Your Honour." he said.
"I understand that the victim was your own sister, Jacob." he said, to Jacob this time
"Yes Your Honour."
"Is the victim here today?," the judge asked our lawyer.
"No, Your Honour" she said, "she’s currently receiving treatment for her injuries and severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But her family is in the gallery." He looked to us and nodded. I didn't like the way he was referring to Isis as just the victim, she has a name you know.
"I see," the judge said, "Jacob, you show no remorse for your actions, so therefore I have no choice but to refuse bail, take him away." Andy patted me on my back
"It's not even started yet." I said, again through clenched teeth. I just wanted Isis home, where she belongs, where I can keep her safe, and him rotting in a cell getting ass raped by the other inmates, with any luck getting shived too.

Isis POV

"He's coming for me!!!" I screamed as I woke up. I sat up and frantically looked around. I pulled a sheet over my head. "Maybe if I'm under here, he won't find me." I whispered to myself. "Unless... HE’S UNDER HERE TOO!" I screamed as hopped out of my bed. As I stood, I felt something hold my arm back causing me to panic.
"Jacob! Let me go!" I yelled trying to pull my arm away from whatever was holding it back. Soon I felt a sharp pain as I saw blood pour out of my arm as I was freed. I ran towards the door while I had the chance. I began banging on the door, and saw Ashley walking towards the door. Once he noticed me, he started running towards me.

Ashley’s POV

I ran towards Isis she looked so scared, I don't think she could get away she was banging on the door. I pushed the door open and she ran into my arms.
"He's in here!" she shouted, "get me out of here now! I'm not safe, he can get me!"
"No he can't" I said, "he's in prison, we’ve just come from there his bail has been refused, he’s staying there, you’re safe, calm down for me." I tried my best to calm her but nothing was working. I looked to Gemma, she seemed to know exactly what I was going to ask her, she nodded, with tears in her eyes, and walked out the room looking for a nurse or a doctor to help. How could they not hear the noise Isis was making?
"Look! He was here!" She showed me her arm, "he got to me!!"
“No,” I said calmly, looking at her arm, “You just pulled your IV out, Gemma’s gone to get a nurse to patch you up again, look theres blood everywhere, they’ll clean you up.” She shook her head.
"He was here. I swear I just saw him." She said crying.
“There’s only me and you here now.” I said walking over to her, “You’re safe now.”
"That's what he wants you to think." She mumbled.
“Wanna come with me, do a tour of the room see if we can find him?” I asked. She nodded and walked towards the bed and got on all fours and looked under.
“He’s not here!” she said as she began to stand up.
“No,” I said, “he’s behind bars, where he belongs, you’re safe now.”
“I’ll never be safe while he’s alive,” she muttered, “We have to do something.”
"Isis," I said taking her hands, "listen to me, I know you're scared but listen let me tell you about scared. Your heart is beating so hard, I can feel it through your hands. There’s so much blood and oxygen pumping through your brain, it’s like rocket fuel. Right now you could run faster and you could fight harder, you could jump higher than ever in your life, and you are so alert it’s like you can slow down time. What’s wrong with being scared? Scared is a superpower. You're always gonna be afraid of something, even if you learn to hide it. Fear is like a companion. A constant companion, always there. But that's ok. Because fear can bring us together. Fear can bring you home."
“I want to be somewhere he can’t find me,” she said, “He can do that everywhere, it’s like he’s got a GPS thing on me.” She was starting to become paranoid again. Just then the nurse came in with Gemma behind her.
“Isis, honey,” the nurse said, “Can I put your IV back in?” She shook her head.
“He can drug me that way,” she said, “I’m not letting you make it easy for him.”
“Isis you need your line in,” said Gemma, “And all these nurses and doctors will make sure Jacob doesn’t come in. If you want, Ashley and I will stay as long as possible, hows that sound?” Isis looked at her and nodded, by that point, I noticed that’s the nurse had got a new line in while Gemma had Isis distracted.
“Mr Purdy?” the nurse asked, “Can I talk to you for a moment?” I nodded and we headed outside the room.
“What’s up?” I asked her, she sighed.
“If these episodes continue,”she started, “We’ll need permission from her next of kin to sedate her, before she hurts herself, I’ve looked at her notes and I noticed that you aren’t her emergency contact, but I also noticed that the people that are on there live in Phoenix. Looking over her case, it seems you know her well, and you’re here, so until we can get hold of Isis’ parents, will you consent to us sedating her if necessary?” I nodded.
“Yes,” I said, “Have you called her parents?”
“Yes,” she said, “but I couldn’t get much out of them, which is why I’m asking you this question.” I nodded again, I had a feeling that this would be the straw that breaks the camel's back meaning that Isis would end up back in the life she’d left.
“Are you going to sedate her for this?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said, “She’s currently a danger to herself, we have cameras in the room so we can see everything, it’s standard policy, don’t worry, she’s safe in our care.” I was shaken by a scream that came from the room. We quickly made our way inside where I saw Isis being held down by one of the nurses and Gemma trying to calm her down again.
“Ashley! Please help me!” Isis called out when she saw me. I looked at the doctor and saw she was getting the medicine ready to sedate her. “They're going to hurt me!”
“No they’re not,” I reassured her from afar, “They’re helping, now it’s time for some sleep. Gemma and I will be here when you wake up.” I saw her eyelids begin to droop as she was slowly sedated, I closed my eyes and sighed as I leant against a nearby wall.
“She’ll be ok,” said Gemma as she came over to me, “You done well, but you really need to go get some sleep, you look as rough as a badger's backside.”
“She’s right,” said one of the nurses, “She’ll be out for the night now, go home, have a shower and rest, come back in the morning.” I nodded as I turned to walk out of the room. After I drove home, I took a quick shower and went straight for bed. It really bummed me out knowing that Isis has been through a lot. If I was there, I could've kept her safe. That's it! I'll make sure I never lose sight of her. I love her too much to see her go. It killed me knowing that she was with Ben while at Mayhem.
