the kind of hurt that reaches your soul

~Olivia’s POV~
“Amelia!” I shouted, leaning against Jinxx’s car mid make out session. I’d grown to love the way I could make the entire campus disappear when he engulfed me in his arms.

“Ollie!” She happily made her way toward me and I knew something was up, she was never genuinely happy to see me. “How is the Goddess of ceramics today?”

I flashed a proud grin. “Still rocking the highest grades in the class.” I looked up at Jinxx. “See you later babe?” I planted a peck on his cheek and couldn’t stop myself from nuzzling his neck and inhaling his scent, it always gave him goose bumps. “I love you.” I whispered to his collarbone.

He kissed my forehead. “I love you too.”

“Wow, you’re actually in love with him.” Amelia said with annoyance as I lead her away from Jinxx.

“I’ve sort of been seeing him for a while.” I sighed heavily. “Have you heard from Andy?”

“He’s….” She looked at me then away. “Seeing someone.”

I felt a smile rush up from the pit of my stomach, feeling my body warm over with pride at having not ruined him after all. “Really? Who?”

“You don’t know her. She’s like, on the other side of the country.” She rolled her eyes at Jinxx.

“Bye Olivia.” Jinxx shouted with his hand on his neck nervously.

“Love you babe!” I waved and looked at Amelia. “What’s her name again?”

She sighed, knowing she couldn’t hide it from me. “Emily.”

“I knew it.” I could feel myself smiling from ear to ear despite my attempts to not give a damn. “She’s been creeping him forever.”

“I think they’re in love.” She said quietly, pulling individual blades of grass from the ground and tossing them to the side.

“Wow.” It felt like a train had hit me, but I was relieved at the same time. I didn’t want Andy to be alone; I just didn’t want him to live without me. “Good for him.” I ran my fingers through my hair and watched Jinxx fiddling with the radio in his car.

"Yeah." Amelia said coldly.

“Hey listen, I’m going to go hang out with Jinxx.” I stood up and stretched. I patted Amelia’s shoulder. “Thanks for telling me.”

She looked up at me with slightly pained eyes. “Did you think it was fair for you to see Jinxx and have Andy waiting for you?”

“Ugh.” I grunted. Why did she have to ask that? “I didn’t expect him to get over me that fast, okay?” I folded my arms and stomped to Jinxx’s car.

“Hey.” Jinxx said compassionately, placing a hand on my shoulder and gently squeezing. “Everything will be okay.”

I looked at him with tears in my eyes. “Drive, pretty boy.” I said, my voice two octaves lower as I tried not to cry.

“Okay.” He sighed and drove me away from campus, away from my thoughts.

It was somewhere past midnight and beyond a lot of shots of vodka and energy drinks when Jinxx helped me get rid of every sign of Andy in my room.

There was a lot of stuff, after five years with somebody your life becomes more than your own, everything becomes ‘we’ and ‘us’. Knowing Andy wasn’t coming home hurt to my core. Going back to ‘me’ was the hardest thing to do. Jinxx held me through the tears. He understood. He was calm when I felt like my world was going to end. All he had to say were the words, “You’ll be okay” And I knew I would.

By the end of the night I knew he was the one I wanted to wake up next to for a long time and I told him that. He didn’t throw himself at me like Andy always had, he took everything I said, analyzed it and responded accordingly. He was completely different from anyone I’d ever known, and I couldn’t see my future without him.
