I Was So Bitter, Till You Came Along

Thirty-Six

Christmas Eve arrived and I'd finally finished all of my shopping. I had just put the last gift under the tree when Andy opened the front door and stepped through it. I looked over as he removed his scarf, hanging it on the coat rack by the door.

"Holy shit it's freezing out there," he shivered as I smiled. His nose was rosy and his cheeks were scarlet from the cold. He removed his shoes and approached the fire place, squatting and warming himself up.

"Of course it's freezing, babe," I said with a chuckle as I approached him. He looked up at me before rising to his full height. He pressed a loving kiss against my lips, and I melted against him, cupping his jaw with both of my hands.

The minute Andy's cold lips left mine, I smiled and laughed.

"I don't think I need anything else for Christmas. You're all I could ever ask for," I said, gazing up into Andy's eyes as he rubbed the small of my back with his thumb. He grinned.

"As much as I'd love to head upstairs, we've got a dinner to host," Andy said. I blushed and shoved him gently as he laughed.

Andy and I both headed in the kitchen to start dinner. We were making a ham, which was Andy's idea because I couldn't think of what to make. He out the thing in the oven and set the timer while I worked on peeling some red potatoes. Once on the stove, I turned the burner on high and approached Andy who was pouring himself a glass of wine.

"You wanna pour me one while you're at it?" I asked as I wrapped my arms around him from behind.

"Red or white?" He asked.

"Hmmm... white," I said. I rounded the counter as Andy grabbed a bottle of white wine and another glass. He removed the cork and poured me a generous amount, sliding it to me after he put the cork back in the bottle.

"Thank you," I said sweetly, and I took a sip just as there was a knock on the door. Andy rushed to go get it, and I kept an eye on the potatoes, just in case they started to boil.

"Merry Christmas!" Ashley sang as he entered the kitchen. I smiled and gave him a huge hug.

"Merry Christmas," I reciprocated. Ashley kissed my forehead and set his things down on the counter. I set my glass of wine on the counter top as Ashley unloaded a bag of gifts.

"Jesus, Ash. Did you bring everything you had under your tree?" I asked as Andy came in with two more bags. He chuckled.

"No, in fact, I didn't," he said with a smile. I raised my eyebrows in doubt, but I didn't press the matter because I really didn't care too much. The three of us unpacked each bag and put the gifts under the tree. I wasn't too sure why Ash had brought any gifts, because we were going over to his place tomorrow for Christmas.

"Anyway..." Ashley muttered once we were done. I brushed my hair out of my eyes and retreated to the kitchen to grab my glass of wine and check on the potatoes. They'd started boiling, so I turned the burner off and carried them over to the sink to drain the water as you would with pasta. I heard the two making conversation as I put the potatoes back into the pot.

"Hey Andy!" I called as I grabbed the potato masher. He entered the kitchen and smiled at me.

"Yeah?" He asked.

"Would you mash these for me?" I asked. He laughed and took the masher from me.

"You're hopeless, babe," he said, and he started to mash the potatoes. I smiled and took a sip of my wine, heading into the living room where Ashley was sitting in front of the fire I'd built only hours before. There was another knock on the door, and I traipsed over to it, pulling it open with my free hand. Smiling at me was CC.

"Hey, Casey!" He exclaimed, and I smiled as I let him in.

"Hey. How are you?" I asked as I closed the door behind him. He removed his jacket and hung it up beside Ashley's on the coat rack. He turned to face me, pulling me into a hug.

"I've been great, you?" He asked.

"Amazing. Do you want anything to drink?" I asked him as we slowly made our way to the kitchen.

"I'll get it," he said, and I nodded as I followed him into the kitchen.

"Babe, what are you doing with these potatoes?" Andy asked me as he continued to mash them.

"I'm gonna put garlic and pepper and sour cream in them. You'll like them, trust me," I said, looking into the pot, "and they don't have to be perfect, Andy. They can have lumps." He let out a deep breath and pecked my lips before taking a swig of his wine.

"Hey," he said to CC, who was watching our exchange with interest. CC nodded at him, taking a sip of his beer.

"Didn't know you guys got back together," he said. My cheeks instantly turned red and I set out on putting the potatoes together like I said I was going to. Andy, however, chuckled and pressed a deep kiss to my lips.

"Oh," I said when he pulled away.

"Yeah. We worked things out. But you don't want to hear about that," Andy said. I smiled.

"Go. I'll finish with these and join you guys in the living room when I'm done," I said.

"You sure?"Andy asked.

"Yes, honey, I'm sure. They're potatoes. They aren't going anywhere," I said. Andy chuckled and pecked my cheek.

"All right," he said, and he and CC headed into the living room together.
