This I Love

Through the shop window he could see a mountain. It was a lower range of mountains in a desert like climate and he didn’t need to worry about cold weather. His eyes graced over a long rope formed with extension cords tied end to end, forming a barricade across two tall fence posts at the end of the gravel driveway. Dangling from a string of jute twine hung a collection of hubcaps.

“One.” He counted aloud, inhaling sharply through his front teeth and tightening his abs.

“Twothreefour.” He exhaled, picking up a cap from a beer bottle and pressing the jagged edges into the palm of his hand.

“Fivesix, seven, eight.” His breathing slowed down. His eyes closed as he counted the remaining hubcaps in his head up to fifteen.

As he visualized the yard with his eyes closed his ears picked up on a sound very far away but undoubtedly headed in his direction. Dropping the bottle cap in his hand, he raced out the rickety screen door and didn’t stop running until he saw his spot. A small dirt mound forming what would look like a hill to a passerby concealed the spot he lay in wait.

The dust swirled dramatically behind the car in the distance, speeding past several tin warning signs having disregarded the chain-link fence bordering the entire area. There were Keep Out warnings all over the place.

Still lying in wait, he lined up the driver in his site and laughed when he saw CC holding a hubcap over his face as he drove.

Ashley lowered the rifle.

CC spun a huge donut in the gravel until Ashley started coughing. In the split second it took Ashley to pull his shirt up to cover his face, something dark covered his vision and closed in around his neck.

“AH!” Ashley yelled, startled but expecting to hear one of the guy’s laughter.

“Shhhh…” An unexpected voice said, pressing his neck forward into the soft crook of an elbow. “Rest easy.”

He would’ve bolted out of that position had he not recognized that voice. What was her name again? He felt his brain pulsate as he ran out of air, his body going limber.

She removed the shirt from overtop his head and pushed his shoulder hard, turning his body over to lay him out flat on his back.

“That was swift.” CC said, tossing the car keys to the girl.

She beamed proudly. “Not too shabby huh?”

“I don’t think he knows what hit him.” CC grunted.

“I didn’t hit him.” She raised her hands. “I’d never hit a….”

“Relax.” CC offered a smile. “He’s out cold.”

“Did you add to the collection?” She asked.

“Yep.” CC pointed, spitting a wad of chewing tobacco into the dirt and pointing to the string of hubcaps. “We should probably leave soon.”

“I’ll catch up.” She tossed the car keys back to CC.

“Suit yourself.” He waved and walked away.

She stared down at Ashley for a moment; her eyes creasing at the edges, forming tiny bags underneath before kneeling over top of him.

He breathed with silent lucidity.

She picked up his hand and took the bright red tube of lipstick from her pocket, writing the number 16 on his palm and waved. CC started the car and that was her cue to run. She raised her hand to Ashley’s face and dragged the corner of her thumbnail along the bottom edge of his bottom lip before standing up again.

When he heard the wheels of the car spinning in the dirt, Ashley opened his eyes and sprung to his feet, racing after it. He stopped at the hubcaps and looked down at his hand. “Seventeen.” He said aloud. They promised he could leave at 17.
