Friday April 23rd, 1993
Cincinnati, Ohio

Amy bounced her six month old daughter lightly, cooing at her, but no matter what she did, the child would not stop crying.

"Please, Tobi," Amy begged. "I've changed you. I fed you. I don't know what's wrong."

Tobi had not stopped crying since Andy had left with Chris that morning. Chris had decided to have a father-son day with Andy and woken him up early to take him out. Amy now wished she'd stopped him.

The front door opened and small feet padded through the house, up the stairs, and to Tobi's nursery. The door opened and Andy came in.

"Whats a matter with Tobi, mama?" he asked. "Why's she crying?"

Chris had followed him into the nursery and stood in the doorway, watching. Andy stared at his mother with his pale blue eyes, waiting for an answer. But Amy was so exhausted, she just couldn't find the energy to respond to her son.

So the little boy turned his attention to his crying sister, taking her from his mother and cradling her close against him. The baby girls cries reduced to sniffling as her brother held her.

"Whatcha crying for, Tobs?" Andy cooed down at her. "Big brother's here. I'll make it better."

Tobi looked up at her brother with identical eyes and reached her little hands up to pat his cheeks. Andy lowered his head so she could reach better.

"An-dy," Tobi said slowly. "Andy."

Andy and both of his parents looked at the baby in shock. She had spoke. And not in baby gargles. She had spoken an actual word. Her first word.

"Me!" Andy exclaimed. "Mama! Daddy! Didja hear? I'm her firs word!"

Amy smiled through her exhaustion as Chris put an arm around her and pulled her close, kissing the top of her head.

"Of course you are," she said. "Tobi's crazy about you. She thinks you hung the moon."

"Wow," Andy said. "Say it again, Tobs."

"Andy," she squealed, patting his cheeks. "Andy! Andy!"

Andy placed her down on the ottoman and tickled his sisters tummy, making her scream in baby delight. Chris and Amy just watched with smiles on their faces.

So, Tobi said her first word. And she's only six months old. Please tell me what you think.
