Unbreakable

chapter 34

The only thing I’m aware of is the sharp pain in my head, and the blackness surrounding me. I don’t know what happened, but I know that I have to wake up. There’s still so much stuff to do before the guys get here.

I force my eyes open, and see a ceiling, and the guys sitting around me. Ashley holds my head in his lap, Andy is to the left of him, CC is to his right. Jake and Jinxx are by my hands. “Oh thank god Laci,” Ashley breathes. “We were so worried about you,” I look around at all of the concerned faces, and my memories start flooding back.

Panic floods my body, I get the sudden urge to run. “I need to get out of here,” I pant. I try to get up, but Ashley holds my shoulders down.

“Lace, you’re okay now,” even though his grip is gentle, I can't help but think of Aiden pinning me against the door just a few moments ago.

“Ashley please let me go,” I cry. “Please, please let go.” Tears drip down my face, and onto the floor underneath me. He looks at the others worriedly. While he’s distracted, I jump up, and sprint out the door. The guys call after me, but I don’t stop. I need freedom, I need to clear my head.

I jog down the cobblestone sidewalks, putting as much distance between me and the venue as I can. I’m sure I look like a mess. My eyes are probably puffy, and crazy looking.

Just then, a shadow crosses my peripheral vision. My head snaps to my left, and for a second I think I see Aiden. My body freezes in terror, and my breathing picks up. The figure turns around, and I see that it’s definitely not Aiden. Another head of short, black hair comes up to my right. Is that Aiden? I start seeing him everywhere I turn. He’s lurking in every ally, at every newspaper stand. I can’t escape him. I do the only thing I can do, and run back to the venue.

I whip the steel door open. Everyone is looking at me with a mixture of surprise and worry, but I blow right by them. They are saying things to me that I can’t make out. All I’m focusing on is getting to Ashley. Ashley will keep me safe.

I knock on his door the instant I reach it. There’s some shuffling coming from inside of the room. The doorknob turns, and he appears in the door frame. “Ashley,” I cry. My arms snake around his ribs. My head finds its place on his chest. “I’m so sorry.”

He places a hand on my head, and my lower back. “What on earth could you be sorry for Rose?” He coos. “You haven’t done anything wrong.” Ashley starts rubbing circles on my back.

“I-I ran away,” I stutter. “I’m getting your chest all wet. I made you worry. I got hurt again,” by now my voice is quivering with sobs. My whole body is shaking, and I’m seeing everything through saltwater tears.

“Shh… don’t worry about me, worry about you,” he says soothingly. “Do you want to go sit on the couch and talk about it?” I sniff, and give him a small not. “Okay then,” one of Ashley’s arms goes under my knees, and he lifts me off the ground. His footsteps rock me back and forth in a comforting time. I hear the door click shut, and we soon find ourselves on a plush, leather couch. The arm under my knees goes around my waist, pulling me closer to him. My head burries itself in the crook of his neck, and my crying subsides. “What happened baby girl?” He asks softly.

The gentleness of his voice makes my chest ache. I take a deep breath to steady myself before telling him what happened. “I went out to get more coffee,” I start. “When I came back A-Aiden was here,” my mind flicks back to the memory, and my breathing immediately picks up. I can feel Ashley tense up around me, but he doesn’t say a word. “He was being really nice,” I continue. “He brought me breakfast, but I was really scared. I started questioning him, and he got angry. He… He,” a lump forms in my throat, and the tears start falling again.

“Take your time Lace,” he cracks. I know he wants to run out and kill Aiden right now, hell I do too.

I snuggle deeper into his neck. “He pushed me against the door, and threw me to the ground. That’s all I remember.” Ashley is silent around me. “Ashley please say something.”

“Lace I don’t know what to say,” he says in a voice near a growl. “How can someone hurt another person like that? Why can’t he just leave you alone?” Ashley’s voice has risen in volume.

“He said he wants me to be his again,” I say meekly.

“Like hell that’s going to happen,” Ashley snaps. “He’s going to have to kill me to get to you.”

I pick my head up so I can look at him. “Ashley, I don’t think he’s afraid to do that.”
