Unbreakable

(Ashley pov)

I love watching Laci play. It’s like she’s on a different planet. Her eyes are closed, and her fingers look like they’re possessed. All of her emotions show when she plays, like her eyes. She can never lie when she’s playing. It’s like opening a door to a world that she has blocked off from everyone else.

April is entranced right now. I snap a picture of her and laci, and it might just be my new favorite picture. The song ends, and April applauds wildly. “That was beautiful!”

“Thank you darlin” She smiles, and puts her violin back. I am so in love with her, it’s insane. Her eyes bug out, and she pulls out her phone.

“April, do you want to sing a song?” I ask.

“What song?”

“Any song.” I smile. “Come into the booth with me.” She takes my hand, and I lead her into the isolation booth.

Lace pokes her head through the door, “Is it okay if my family comes over for dinner?”

“Since when do you ask me permission?” I chuckle.

“So that’s a yes?” She draws out the yes in a I’m-not-really-sure-what’s-going-on way.

“Yes.” I laugh.

“Okay…” She says in the same confused manner, and then closes the door.

“I love her so much…” I sigh.

“Me too…” April mimics.

“Come here girlie.” I pull her into a side hug, and she presses her cheek against mine.

“Ashley can we take a selfie?”

“Of course!” I grab my phone, and open up the front camera. She tightens her grip on my neck, and presses her face harder against mine. She is so freaking cute! I see Laci jumping up and down and fanning her face. So cute!!! She mouths. I don’t think I’ve mentioned how much I love this girl.

“Ashley what can I sing?”

“Oh yeah.” I snap back into reality and pull the mic down for her. “Sing anything you want.” I smile. Laci sits down at the controls, and puts on her studio headphones.

“Okay!” She takes a deep breath, and steps up to the mic. “The window is open and so’s that door, I didn’t know they did that anymore! Who knew we owned eight thousand salad plates?” Laci fans her face and has a huge cheesy grin on her face. “For years I’ve roamed these empty halls, Why have a ballroom with no balls? FInally they’re opening up the gate!!!” Laci looks like she is about to start hyperventilating, this has got to be the cutest picture I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing. “There’ll be actual real live people, it’ll be totally strange. Wow am I so ready for this change! ‘Cuz for the first time in forever, there’ll be magic, there’ll be fun. For the first time in forever, I could be noticed by someone!! Don’t know if I’m elated or gassy, but I’m somewhere in the zone! ‘Cuz for the first time in for ever!!! I won’t be alone. Okay I’m done.” April smiles. Laci gives her a standing ovation.

“That was beautiful.” I beam.

“Your turn!” April exclaims.

(Laci pov)

Ashley and I sing “Love is An Open Door.” and we spend the rest of the day singing every song April can think of. It shocks me when my phone buzzes in my pocket. We’re here.”Oh my gosh I forgot that they’re coming for dinner!” Oh God it’s 6:30!

“I did too!” Ashley drags his hand down his face.

“Who’s coming?” April asks.

“My family.” I tell her.

“I get to meet your mommy and daddy?!”

This hits me like a ton of bricks. Ashley holds me a little tighter to his side. (Which I’m quite grateful for) “No, sorry hun.”

“Oh. Why not?” She asks innocently.

I take a deep breath, and look at her curious, wide eyes, “My parents died when I was younger.” I say softly. She wraps her arms around my neck, and buries her head in my shoulder.

“I’m sorry.” She makes me want to cry. I don’t even know why. Ashley slides his other arm around April, and laces his fingers together.

“Tum we’re starving down here!” Greg exclaims.

Ashley squeezes us tighter, and April and I squeel. “Ah my two favorite girls.”

“Tum don’t make me go up there!” Uncle Derek yells.

“I don’t think you want to go up there.” I hear Stephen tease.

“I love my family.” I sigh.
